I'm so glad I was feeling well enough to sit down and watch more cozy Frieren with you all this weekend. How funny is it that there was a whole episode about Frieren taking care of Fern when she was sick in this mini binge? To quote V for Vendetta, "I, like God, do not play with dice and do not believe in coincidence" 🤣🩷I have a feeling this Mage Certification Arc is going to get INTENSE. I both love and hate that Frieren and Fern are split up into separate groups. And I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that there are other mages in here that are willing to murder other mages just to get this prized certification.. I can't wait to watch more with you all next week!Sorry for any sniffles/throat clearing. I hope you enjoy sipping some tea with me during these episodes 🍵✨________________________________Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/FFiUliuM9VEI watched this on Crunchyroll in original Japanese with subtitles

Thank you all for your patience with my late posting of this one this week! Demon Slayer will be posting in about an hour or so once I finish wrapping up the edit for that one 🩷 Enjoy!

KJ

I've literally just caught up, finishing episode 15 😂 thank you. Hope you're feeling better.

kaliwali

I'm getting there, thank you! How have you been liking Frieren so far!? I forgot to ask you in Discord when you mentioned you're finally jumping in 🩷

KJ

It's a beautiful story. I think like you've said, a meditation on time, memory and relationships. I wonder if there's an official map available to follow their journey 🤔

Robert da Spruce

Glad you’re feeling a little better Kali Been up since 5AM watching the Olympic hockey game. Hope to check out your reaction later today!

kaliwali

I'm glad!! And I was wondering the same thing but I've been terrified to google anything since the second season came out 😅🤣

Terry In the UK

Kali, please don't apologise for any sniffles during filming, we all get poorly from time to time....our only concern is that you feel better soon. As much as I'd like to promise to be sipping some tea during this, there may be a teeny tiny chance that wine might accidentally pour itself into my glass before I've boiled my kettle.... You know from previous comments how much I'm adoring this show with you and you've genuinely made my Sunday now I have this to get comfy with. Sincerely wishing you feel back to yourself and full health as quickly as possible.

The Stubborn Old Lady that sends you on fetch quests that escalate into a mini-boss, lmao. If that ain't what RPG side quests are like...

Chuckles1004

Your write-ups are soo amazing! You might've missed your calling as a writer. Maybe 'Stephania King' 😀 It sucks that we, as people, hear 1 person trolling/talking $hit as opposed to the hundreds that that genuinely applaud or think somethings great. Just the human condition. Sorry Kali. 😓

kaliwali

Ahh nice! I'm so sad the Olympics end today.. I've been loving Curling and of course Figure Skating! Winter Olympics are definitely my favorite ✨ Hope you enjoy when you can! Also I saw someone else address the de-sync issues and translation issues and it's most likely because of Netflix. I have heard that their subtitles aren't as accurate as Crunchyroll. But hopefully it's not too much of a headache going forward 🩷

kaliwali

Ahhh the ol' accidental wine pour 🤣🩷 Enjoy your glass of wine with these episodes! I can sense an intense arc coming up very soon in this season again and I can't wait! Being sick is the worst.. but watching Frieren and Demon Slayer with you all this weekend was a really comforting and fun distraction! Thank you so much for the kind words and well wishes!

kaliwali

Thank you, Chuckles!! Ah it's so true though. Especially as a full time creator. A million people could say nice things, but then the one rotten comment is the one that slowly seeps into my soul and distorts reality lol. I definitely need to get better at silencing those comments in my head, but it is hard sometimes I won't lie 😅🩷

Pet theory, as I haven't read the manga: From what we remember about Kraft in episode 11, he observed that Frieren must be relatively young compared to him, based on her ambivalence about the existence of The Goddess. He implied that he used to think that way too. He's also jacked. So Kraft's statue is kitted out like a warrior class. The statue of his human partner was a priest. My pet theory is that after the death of his partner, he took up his friend's robes and faith and became a Monk. Monk was the best choice for him. From the previous episode we know that those in the Priest job class are born with the talent to use the Goddess's magic. However, since Kraft can't be a priest, the other faith based job class best suited for physical strength is that of a Monk, that uses hand to hand combat. Makes me want to bust out my Nintendo DS and start playing Final Fantasy 4 again. Good old Yang Fan Leiden.

I really want to play curling one of these days. Looks fun! I don’t think there’s many curling facilities in California though 😄 I was curious if you’re able to watch figure skating. If you looked upon that time in your life fondly. Or if seeing it now triggered some PTSD. So I’m glad you’re able to enjoy it Alysa Liu is from Oakland. Not too far from where I live. So that’s pretty cool! I also really enjoyed how all the skaters are so supportive of each other I loved when Amber Glenn shielded Kaori Sakamoto from the cameras when Kaori was crying after her free skate

Chuckles1004

Well, we, your community, adores amd loves you! 😀❤️ For real, your write-ups are so exciting, exhilarating and entertaining. They'd be great for any movie/show review or on a book jacket or an IMDB write up. It's any amazing summation. They always put a big bright smile on my face. 😁

Yeah while it's usually normal to change the op every season . Sometimes they change it per Arc which can be in the same season. It's more noticable in shorter anime seasons like this but for animes with 30 or 40 or 50 episodes a arc it feels more normal.

rubberkidney

im glad your strength has returned(on the uptick at least), time to continue the journey.

Terry In the UK

So well said, Kali's write ups are sublime, and yes....this whole community adores you Kali. I've always conceded that I'm awful with my words, but hopefully I have been able to convey how much I..we all love and appreciate you in my YouTube comments.

HadSkills

Sometimes longer anime seasons have “cores”. Most anime now a days are about 12 episodes long. Or one core. Frieren is a 2 core season one, so they have two openings and endings, or so i understand it. I’m getting back into anime myself so it’s all new to me also haha

Nina

No please don't stop posting your reviews/ analysis here. Don't give in to those idiots. I haven't even seen any of them. Most of us love your reviews. I don't have a discord, I don't even know exactly what that is and I really don't want to use anything else just so I can keep reading your reviews. , I just love reading them before watching the reaction with you. Please just keep everything the way it is 🙏🙏🙏💝💝

Irrelevance - Bjorn Vanbelleghem

Yay, Kali's back! Thank you Kali. Don't give the haters what they want. I love reading through all that you write!

Andrew Kerr

Just to explain the mid-season intro/outro song change a little (although you pretty much nailed it in your reaction anyway), with longer 20+ episode anime like Frieren, the season will often be split up into 2 parts, with each part having its own little story arc that contributes towards the show's overall story. It's not always super noticeable in more character-driven stories like Frieren, but it's a lot more noticeable in big action-heavy anime as the pattern for those ones will often be one arc of fighting a big bad, followed by a smaller more light-hearted training arc. So the intro/outro change usually signifies the start of the new arc. Plus, when they air, even though it's all 1 season, there's often a gap between the two parts. Sometimes short gaps, sometimes longer ones. So in Frieren's case, episode 16 of season 1 aired December 22nd, and then there was a 2-week gap before episode 17 aired on January 5th. Other anime have much bigger gaps. Like Fire Force, for example; part 1 of season 3 finished airing back in June 2025, and part 2 of season 3 only started airing again in January 2026. So the intro/outro change can often tell you where that break in the airing of the show was when you're bingeing it instead of watching it air live week-to-week. They're not concrete rules, but they're common enough that you'll notice it as you watch more and more anime.

rubberkidney

oh geez, ubel the armpit already here i dont know why but i thought we had a few more episodes.

Muz

Notice that when saying goodbyes to Old Man Voll, Frieren said “sore ja”(goodbye with no promise to see you again) instead of “mata nee”(light promise to see you again).

M1 Maz

I love these last few episode's deeper look into the lore of magic in this world! Definitely showed me that there's much more out there than what I thought I knew, with the spells, mana, and other mages. Really invested now in this exam and where it's going to go next week Also, growing up, anytime my hands were cold I always grabbed my sisters cheeks like that LOL

Nomyrose

Leaving this on both reactions today because I think you really need some words of encouragement, not trying to spam, just want to help and hope you see this on at least one of these reactions. It's so crazy to me that people think your analysis's are AI slop, I read them and think, damn is she a writer in her spare time? I ALWAYS enjoy them and I have even thought about asking you if you write or used to be a writer in any capacity, now I wish I would have said something sooner. I love the way you put your heart and soul into every word written and I can literally feel your passion for the subject material through your written words. I really hope you don't let the vast MINORITY of trolls to stop you from expressing yourself, but I will totally understand if you don't want to deal with hurtful stupid comments anymore either.

JoyBoy69

I like your write up analysis. Online trolls are just unhappy people. There's plenty of your real supporters and fans here so don't listen to the 1% of haters but the 99% who respect and appreciate what you do. Your reactions are genuine and sweet! Left on both reactions.

mitchhamilton64

theres a theory that the author for frieren wrote sein out of the story because if he stayed then stark and fern would start dating way sooner then intended.

Nicholas Maffei

Oh damn, I was really enjoying and looking forward to your post-analysis summary entries on these posts. They let you speak more at length about what you'd noticed and the themes you enjoyed in a more thought out manner than video recording allows. I assume that's because you had time to sit and ponder on them for a bit, which is nice.

Synthetic_CK

Every time you take a sip from that mug I imagine you poking your eyes out like a cartoon I don't know why.

At around 10:41 (where Himmel sadly looks toward the ground in response to hearing Voll's reason for defending the village) is where I personally think Himmel decides to not explicitly express his feelings to Frieren; he sees how Voll is isolated, bound, and burdened by the promise he made to his human wife and does not want Frieren to suffer in the same way. It adds even more depth to his love for Frieren. From the clocktower scene, I had already appreciated how gentle and pure his love for her was. He knew she wouldn't understand/be in a position to appropriately reciprocate those feelings in his lifetime, so he left it through that memorable gesture that he figured she would only understand after his passing. To think that on top of this, he possibly considered the downside of love between a human and one with a much longer lifespan makes it even more bittersweet.

Jay Steiner

This is a 2 cour season. Basically, 1 cour is like 3 months of weekly releasing episodes for like 12 or 13 episodes. Frieren is kind of a special case because it released the first 4 episodes on the first week. Usually, at the start of a new cour, there's a new Opening and Ending, and episode 17 is the start of the 2nd cour.

shido ^-^

I love the new opening and ending songs! Specially the visuals of the new ending always gets me emotional. Them starting it with her laying down by a tombstone and at the end laying on Fern's lap-- thinking bout how long lived Frieren is and will eventually outlive Fern icant :(

Xthentic

Ubel is wife. Ill fix her.

Camvrcz

What Frieren does for Old Man Voll is a very nuanced and subtle act of compassion. From my experience with grandparents. When someone's memory is escaping them, it can be very upsetting and unsettling to be told of it at every instance. So, when Frieren finally realizes he truly has become senile, instead of shocking him with them having killed the Demon King 80 years prior she simply says nothing and let's it be. This sort of thing will go unnoticed unless you've experience a loved one developing dementia or something of the sort. It's an incredibly deep kindness she showed Voll in that moment. And seeing as he is at the end of his life, it will be another beautiful reunion when they reach heaven, no doubt. I can respect people tying the whole reason Voll is still alive is because he wants to see the Demon King dead for her sake, but I'm not quite sure that is the intention. However, I'm simply speaking on my experience with loved ones and dementia.

Sankis

Frieren is secretly a series about the various kinds of Wife Guy

Sankis

I think all the stuff about killing is intended to feel like a big, jarring tone shift. Frieren has largely lived her life on the fringe of society while keeping to herself. Her magic is old, albeit extremely refined and powerful, but completely out of sync with what has been going on with "mainstream" magic. While she's been out there doing her own thing human mages have been engaged in decades of politics and various magic trends have come and gone. Frieren and Fern are complete outsiders to this culture of cutthroat politics and intrigue but are forced to engage in it due to circumstances and are almost immediately thrust into a situation where killing is just another means to get ahead.

kaliwali

It is pretty dangerous with glasses LOL

kaliwali

Thank you so much, seriously. After the overwhelmingly amazing comments on both this and Demon Slayer I will keep doing what I love and continue writing the summaries like I have been 🩷 It's hard not to let the trolls win sometimes when you're a creator and you pour your heart/soul into something just for it to be poo poo'd on. But I love that so many of you have been enjoying my summaries so much that you thought to write such kind words encouraging me to keep going. So seriously, thank you!

kaliwali

Ahhh I didn't notice the clothing at all, so thank you so much for pointing that out! I love it!

Robert da Spruce

New Theme songs! And I think I like them! I’m a little surprised Sein left the group. I know he had his own journey, but I thought he’d be around longer. Maybe he’ll return once he finds Gorilla I’m enjoying the Mage tests. It goes to show, how unique Frieren and her group are. Aside from the new character Denken, the other Mages are all pretty shady. Although Denken might turn out to be the most dangerous of them all You did end on a cliffhanger though! It’s gonna be a long week to watch the next episode! 😭

Jose Morales

I caught up and am loving this show. I felt similar to the way you described why Frieren decided not to tell Voll about The Demon King already being defeated. Given the average lifespan of dwarves in the show is 300 year, and Voll has surpassed that, I feel is because of his determination to keep his promise to his wife. If Frieren would have told him the full truth, his will to go on would have been gone, and that would be the end of him. Also seeing Frieren so happy to want to see Voll in the beginning showed how much she has changed/grown in the last 80 years.

Name Name

Your sickness sounds exactly like the one i just went through, hope you get better ♥️

DorkRunner

Lots of animes will shift intros mid-season, it doesn't only happen when the season changes! It can go either way; some only change intros with a new season, some have two or three different intros play in a single season, and some never change the intro throughout the course of the show. Often it's as you thought--it usually happens either at the beginning of a new "arc" or when the focus is shifting. Sometimes it also seems like it happens simply because all or most of the foreshadowing of the previous intro has been fulfilled, so they preview what's coming next again with a new intro.

Tacosareneat

Reading this description made me sad ): you're a gem of a person and I'm sorry that people called the things you were writing "AI slop". The genuine passion and excitement was very apparent reading them. "AI slop" is just a buzzword that most people don't even know how to use it. Don't let them get to you. The type of person who'd say that isn't worth getting upset about bc they literally just don't know what they're talking about

gogetassgk

You know, it's funny. When I first read your summaries, my first thought was how long they were and how time consuming it would be to actually create them. I thought you either wrote these manually or used AI. Honestly, I don't blame you one bit if you had some help from AI. AI is just a tool to increase productivity, after all. I don't care if it was AI assisted as long as you got your point across. That's what a summary is all about. To me, it doesn't matter if you wrote it manually or had AI help. AI saves a ton of time, especially since you mentioned you're short on it. People who call it 'AI slop' are usually just unable to comprehend that someone has better writing than them (lol). It is what it is. There will always be people like that.

Саша Милошевић

people are so used to everything being quick and easy that nowadays when someone puts in time to write something meaningful they think its AI,, its honestly both funny and sad

TChang23

Just came here from YouTube, the laid back commentary has been so nice to watch I’m glad you’ve been enjoying your first anime expirience with this and demon slayer, I think you would really enjoy March comes in like a lion as well it has a very laid back vibe with some great character moments it’s honestly been my comfort series this past year I think you’d really enjoy it!

Holy Arathi

Dude the old man Voll section messed me up. Frieren couldn’t bring herself to tell Voll the demon king was dead because it probably would’ve made him spiral. He’s senile and he doesn’t know it. If he’s faced with that fact he could start to question his entire reality.

Holy Arathi

Sein has his own Skyrim quest line which branches out into 12 other side quests because of the stubborn old woman.
