This movie made me feel so many emotions that I honestly find it really hard to explain all of them completely! There was something so beautiful and calming about it. The animation, the sound design, the ENTIRE soundtrack. It felt like it was moving through my soul 🤍

I know that sounds dramatic, but seriously! I could have watched Kiki fly over the ocean on her broom in zig zag pattern while listening to that music playing for another three hours and been perfectly happy. But even the quiet moments of this movie were so incredible too. Which I feel like I've never said before. Ever lol.It never felt like it was rushing to get somewhere or trying TOO hard to entertain me. It just was what it was. It let me exist in this beautiful little world with Kiki for a while. And reflect on what it feels like to go through growing pains and losing sparks. And under all the beauty and calmness, there was a really deep message here. A message about growing up and slowly losing touch with the person you thought you were. Kiki leaves home knowing who she is: A witch. A flying witch. She's excited about the world and about proving that she can make it on her own. But then life starts happening. Responsibilities. Work. And that feeling of loneliness really started to sink in. She compares herself to the other girls in town and judges herself way too hard. I think what really got me was how quick it all happened. Because that's like real life too, right?Sometimes burnout, depression, stress, or even just plain old LIFE can creep up on you. Then you wake up one day so disconnected from who you've become..Wait. Where did I go?Obviously, as a content creator lucky enough to do something I genuinely LOVE into my job, the entire idea of Kiki turning flying into work hit me HARD. Isn't it so strange and disheartening when your passions become responsibilities and bills and stress? When suddenly the things that brought you the most calm and joy in life come with deadlines, expectations, numbers, pressure, and this constant fear of what happens if you one day just... can't do it anymore. What happens when the thing that makes you feel alive starts to exhaust you? What happens when you lose your spark?I've definitely had so many moments where I feel so connected and grateful for what I do, but then somehow a season changes, or sometimes it's overnight.. I can feel completely burnt out and disconnected from it all. It's a struggle to hit record. It feels like someone else is looking at me on the camera. Then I spiral into a panic because I think I need to FORCE it. Force myself to get back to that version of who loved it so effortlessly. But I think that's why Ursula's conversation with Kiki might be one of my favorites in the entire movie. Sometimes you can create. Sometimes you just can't. Don't put so much pressure on it! Sometimes you have to stop trying so hard and go live your life instead. Rest. Experience something new. Trust that eventually your spark will reignite again.Maybe growing up isn't about becoming one final version of yourself.Maybe we're constantly losing and rediscovering pieces of ourselves as we go.And maybe losing your spark for a little doesn't mean you've lost it forever.I really, really loved this movie. I went in expecting a cute, cozy story about a girl in a bakery with a cat LOL. But instead I got personally attacked by Studio Ghibli with an existential crisis wrapped in beautiful animation and the most whimsical soundtrack imaginable ✨But I think the most comforting part of this entire movie...Is that it gave us all permission to accept those restful days fully. To get outside again. To take the road less traveled for today. To connect with others and live your life when the dark days come.Because you'll eventually fly again. You always do 🤍Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿WANT TO WATCH IN DUB? USE LINK BELOW!SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/O29nU59McHMI watched this on HBO Max

2 movies in one week Kali you're spoiling us, i could get used to this. I love checking out new anime movies so I can watch them with my daughters

Howie

I haven't watched this reaction yet, but I got to listen to your intro. Like you, I am a person who is moved by music. So, you need to know that Joe Hisaishi (the composer of Kiki) is to Hayao Miyazaki, as John Williams is to Steven Spielberg. Joe Hisaishi's scores for Ghibli movies are renown and considered classics, even among western viewers. Two summers ago, he conducted three packed concerts at Madison Square Garden, featuring all his Ghibli music. If you watch more Ghibli films, I'm sure you'll develop a love and appreciation for his music!

rubberkidney

Yes, drip the Patreon exclusives directly onto my eyeballs! YouTube scum, we don't need their kind here. I swear you've done a Studio Ghibli reaction. That might just be Phantom Reaction Syndrome, though. But there are so many great movies that you should watch here. I mean, you should really watch all of them, especially since you're watching anime; it makes so much sense. And they are 100% on kaliwaliaali. I've actually never seen this one. This is one of the few Studio Ghibli (Hayao Miyazaki) movies that I've never seen. But his eye for detail, his level of effort, and the attention to small things that shouldn't matter but end up being everything is just so overwhelming. He is absolutely the grandmaster of animation. Every frame is just so sumptuous and full of life and energy.

Dude Longcouch

It's been so long since I've seen this movie, a late recap is actually perfect for me, because I definitely need to watch it again before I read your thoughts :p

im glad you enjoy what is so charming about the miyazaki magic of taking its time and letting the characters and environment be absorbed by the audience with the help of the music of course. always such a beautiful, relaxing score in miyazaki films. miyazaki does so well with adding details in not only the environment but characters actions. like the small detail of when kiki gave that note to onosa at first and she unfolds it and its upside down so she takes a moment to put it right. those small touches! as a sub purist, ghibli films for the most part are good to go with watching the dub. usually great quality, though there are some changes still. i remember originally there was a few changes in this on in the dub. two that i remember is when kiki and that forest lady are hitch hiking, theres a few lines thrown out with the driver going "forest lady" (i dont remember her name, sorry) "is that you?" and she goes "come on! i know this guy!" to just kind of put the idea of theyre not hitch hiking with a stranger. which is fair, it is a kids film and in the end when jiji meets up with kiki again, kiki can hear him. these were later changed to how it originally intended. as for kiki not able to understand jiji anymore, i think the idea was partially that she was losing her powers so she couldnt hear him and maybe jiji knew that she needed to not rely on a familiar space partially so she can find her own magic again, so he leaves her to be more independent. thats why its great she ran into the painter again and got out of her zone for a while to find her own way. and in doing so she also grew and didnt need to rely on jiji so much, which is why she still cant hear him talk in the end, but hes still there. its like they both have their own journeys and thats okay. they can still be a family. lmao, kali, theyre not going to a club club but its a group gathering, something flying club for like minded individuals.

KamikazeCDN

Studio Ghibli really are masters at creating a full world. Yes the art and animation are beautiful but its the little things they do. The artist's cabin just full of stuff everywhere, very lived in but also probably very realistic or even something like Jiji crawling back under the blanket in bed, etc. They do so many little things very well that just builds this fantastic world for us. And like you touched on, whether it's depression, feeling burned out, struggling to find yourself, etc - Studio Ghibli does a really good job at telling what can be a heavy topic in a much more pleasant way. As for Kiki not understanding Jiji, as far as I understand/remember it, it's because Kiki had matured and witches lose the ability to speak to them when that happens. So he sort of just becomes a regular old cat once again. Though my memory of that could be fuzzy.

Inhonor Oftrip

FYI - the soundtrack for Kiki's Delivery Service is on Spotify! You may already be planning this, but Ponyo is definitely worth a (re)watch if you didn't fully get to see it

Sonya

I haven't watched Kiki in a long while - it was great watching it again with reactions. Kiki, Totoro, and Ponyo are definitely the most kid-friendly Ghibli movies. Then maybe onto Arrietty, Castle in the Sky, Howl, and Spirited Away for bit older kids.

carlosy

Loved watching your reaction! Kiki’s Delivery Service is one of my favorite ghibli movies. It’s one of those movies where the music, the beautiful scenery and the characters just takes your mind into a peaceful bliss. Every scene has so many little details to appreciate and the pregnant pauses actually lets you do that unlike other movies where it’s jump cut after jump cut. The message is beautiful and it’s one of those movies that will always put a smile on your face if you’re ever feeling down.

Azure_Sentry

Growing up, we always watched the English dub, so it was legitimately strange to hear Jiji's voice be sooo different lol. Big nostalgia watch for me, I'm not a huge Studio Ghibli fan (they're cute and all but not all my thing) but this one just hits every time!

bukuwawa

I heartily recommend looking into more Ghibli movies. One word of warning, though: there is one movie in their repertoire that, for you in particular, I would be wary of. It's called Grave of the Fireflies, and it is not what you might call a feel-good romp.

Usagi

I don’t know about others, but I will 99 times out of 100 choose sub over dub.

Justyn

first time seeing this, but ive seen a couple other ghibli films recently as well like howls moving castle and castle in the sky. spirited away is one ive loved ever since i was a kid, but this one really REALLY got me. i probably didnt stop crying for more than like 10 minutes at any given time watching this. too much to get into on a comment such as this but this one resonated with me so hard. all of their films are beautiful. the hand painted canvas with computer animation layered on top idk how they did this stuff in the mid- late 80s. the score for castle in the sky is absolutely phenomenal but this one is really good as well. i hope you watch more ghibli soon, and hopefully the other ones dont make me go through an entire box of tissues in 2 hours.

Hey Usagi, I tend to enjoy most subs than dubs overall as well, though, this dub and others I really do enjoy and some feel are better than the original. I've not seen this one in sub in a while, be good to give it a listen once again.

JULLIEN Nicolas

Yes! So happy you finally watched a Ghibli movie! I am in the sub over dub camp all the way. The OSTs by Joe Hisaishi are some of my favorites, I have them saved on Spotify and listen to them regularly. I hope you continue on your Ghibli studio journey, no bad choices there, but Princess Mononoke would be my personnal choice. The message, the music, the world and the protagonists are some of the most memorable imo.

kaliwali

Wow beautiful quote! Did you just come up with that!? 😱 This film was beautiful in every way!! I wasn't expecting the overall message to really sink with me the way it did.. I loved it! And I'm already planning to rewatch with my daughter this weekend now ✨

kaliwali

I'm going to check out the english dub this weekend so I'm interested to see what Jiji's voice sounds like in that now! haha

kaliwali

oh wow I've been recommended that one so many times, too! 👀 yikes lol

Pete Luhtaniemi

I'd love to see you watching Porco Rosso.

kaliwali

LOL that kind of club makes so much more sense.. duh 😅 I'm definitely planning on watching this one in dub over the weekend with my daughter! I'm excited to see the differences. I feel like that moment hitchhiking makes way more sense than talking about her legs hahaha So for the next ghibli movies, should I do the same? Watch them in sub? Maybe I should do a poll 🤔

kaliwali

This is my first Ghibli reaction! I feel like I may have a doppelgänger on YouTube. So many people lately have thought I've already watched Season 2 of the One Piece LA and are getting legitimately mad at me that I am 'not remembering' from the LA now in my uploads 😅 And there was a few other movies I've put out recently where people are asking if it's a rewatch or something. So strange!

kaliwali

My notes are up now! Sorry it took so long 😅 I'm behind schedule by a day this week so that's why uploads are late hehe

AJ

Yeah, that was an AJ original quote, *doffs my hat*(╭ರ_•́)-<🎩, writing has always been extremely easy for me, and I'm a bit of a romantic some would say so I like to get poetic. Funny as I never really wanted to write much ever, but any time in school or the university I've always put my best foot forward when I write. Still do the same today, though, now I actually enjoy it much like I have art and martial arts. So please, I hoped you'd enjoy it, be prepared for more to come. Along with extremely long verbose comments when I feel like delving into deep thoughts on things you say or media you react too. ദ്ദി(˵ ๑❛ ֊ ❛„˵) ✧

Paul Montgomery

Ahh, I was going to recommend this one! In that case I'll recommend one of the lesser known Ghiblis, "Only Yesterday." It's a very cozy slice of life film about a young woman returning to the Japanese countryside where she grew up in the 60s. Daisy Ridley provides the main character's voice in the dub.

rubberkidney

It was a Star Wars reference, my guy. Calm down. Obviously, I'm just having a little fun, and I use YouTube as well. I said nothing about people liking or disliking animation.

rubberkidney

Phantom Reaction Syndrome is very real. I say it as a joke, but many times I've seen a reactor that I've been watching for a while watch something and I'm like, "Are they rewatching this?" Obviously, there are ebbs and flows and trends for what people are watching and reacting to, but sometimes all of the reactions you watch blend together in your mind. When your favorite reactor is reacting to something that you watch a lot of reactions to, it gives you pause.

Howie

Yes do a poll for Ghibli movies! 😊

mitchhamilton64

i hope your daughter loves it! i didnt grow up on ghibli but i bet i wouldve loved these films if i did and i know a lot of people did and do still. i think a poll would be nice, but to my surprise, a lot of people are saying sub is the way to go. i usually see a lot of comments arguing for dubbed with ghibli. i think at the very least, dub would be great for howls moving castle for a reason i wont spoil but i bet will be regardless.

Azure_Sentry

Yeah its probably the biggest delta (though since it was my first impression, I prefer the dubbed version voices. Kirsten Dunst was the voice of Kiki to me lol). Osono is also notably different but less "oh, that's weird". The dialogue is also softened a bit, though without as many changes as the 1989 Streamline dub I don't think.) Love love this movie in either version though!

David L

I do enjoy all of the Ghibli movies But my favorites are Princess Mononoke the animation is extraordinary but it's kind of violent, Howl's Moving Castle, and NausicaA of the valley of the wind. NausiccaA was the first anime I ever watched because it was released in theaters in the early 80s under a different name Warriors of the Wind. It blew my mind as a kid. But it might be considered violent for this day and age. Great reaction,Kali! Have a wonderful day!🙂

bukuwawa

it's an excellent film, but it's often described as "10 out of 10, wouldn't watch again"

bukuwawa

i still listen to the princess mononoke OST frequently

Christian F

This is one of the few Studio Ghibli movies I haven't seen so this will be a first watch for me too. I'm 10 minutes in and I'm already absolutely loving this movie lol.

Armchair Rizzard

i would prefer sub for first time watching Kali but i also wouldn't be mad because as the other chatter said: dubs are almost always good for Miyazaki movies.

Armchair Rizzard

I'm excited to watch this later when not working. If you liked this, you're going to have a great time with the other Miyazaki movies. Have you seen any others?

Usagi

Ngl Ghibli movies dubbed are pretty great too, especially my favorite Spirited Away.

Kal

Yeah, Ghibli always manage to get top ranking actors for their dubs in all languages, and although I'll always choose sub over dub, I have a soft spot for Porco Rosso in French, where he's voiced by the warm and deep voice of Jean Reno.

Kal

Yeah, that movie is as beautiful as it's brutal. The way it uses negative space to let you stay alone, in silence, in the dark with your own emotions is an absolute masterclass. It's the kind of movie that a part of you regret watching, but the rest of you know it'll stay with you the rest of your life.

rubberkidney

Little Witch Academia, Trigger Studios. That's what you want to watch if you want to keep the witch train rolling.

Kal

I mean... Mononoke is top tier on so many levels but the OST is something else, it's my favorite Ghibli followed closely by Porco Rosso, not that any of them are anything less than spectacular.

Kal

And so your Ghibli journey begins! Loved the reaction and it might be just me but if was interesting seeing you kinda emulate the feel of the movie by your silences, it felt like you were less vocal than usual but so very expressive, it's like we could see the emotions and thoughts resonating deep inside and I love it when people allow themselves to just feel something without feeling the need to fill in the blanks. At least that's what it felt like to me and I really enjoyed this contemplative experience.

Usagi

The way I interpret is that kiki’s newfound magic is the connection with life around her and others. So the “connection to life and others magic” replaces her childhood magic. And moving on from childhood is overwhelming! And there’s grief involved. But Jiji was able to find love and Kiki was able to make new connections and growth to spark her new magic. And so jiji had to lose the ability to talk and it’s replaced with his cat romance. Kiki grows from her shyness and feeling like an outsider to accepting the love around her and has to find a new magic. Amazing reactions as always! Thank you

Usagi

And now that I think about jiji and his remarks was kind of a symbol of how Kiki would keep her distance from others at first.

Howie

Nausicaa is my favorite OST

rubberkidney

When you reminded me that it was part of the summer's movie list(Long, no other Ghibli movies that I remember.), I got real bummed out. But then you said more Ghibli movies soon, so I'm hyped again. You got me going down, and you got me coming back up, Kali. You're giving me so much of what I want, I feel like I have to give you more money.

J_Monsodicon

omg omg this is an absolute banger of a film!!! my favorite of Miyazaki’s is Castle In The Sky!!! hope you’d be able to react to it sometime! 🤞🏻

Stephen Magee

I love the Ghibli movies, and your reaction. I look forward to your reaction to the others. Did i hear you right, you had a Ninja, a Kawasaki Ninja ? I have a Kawasaki. 🙂

Lux

My daughter is also 13 and this summer, it feels as if she is also discovering herself the same way Kiki was finding her own way. 13 is young to go off on their own, but maybe that’s just because of our own environment. In Japan, the culture tends to treat kids with more maturity. Often times you would hear kids as young as 6-7 going to the grocery store on their own. I DM’d you on the side before, but I’ll throw it out there again. Try A Place Further Than The Universe. That’s also a great short series about one finding themselves. Lots of feel good inspirations but also other emotions too.

Sonya

Yes! A Place Further than the Universe would be great! Nice and short miniseries but each ep is so fulfilling.

Ian YY

Totally agree with your take! To add to that, it’s actually one of Hayao Miyazaki’s most profound narrative choices~ Miyazaki once explained in an interview that Jiji never actually spoke human language in the first place. The voice Kiki heard was simply a projection of her own inner self—representing her childhood, innocence, and reliance on her comfort zone. When Kiki loses her magic, it represents her identity crisis. But when she flies again and saves Tombo, she doesn't just get her magic back; she undergoes a permanent transformation. Not being able to understand Jiji at the end signifies that Kiki has officially grown up. She no longer needs Jiji as her emotional crutch because she has found her own independence and confidence. It’s a bittersweet but beautiful metaphor for growing up: we lose a bit of our childhood magic, but we gain the strength to face the real world as our true selves. (Fun fact: The early US Disney dub actually changed the ending to make Jiji speak again because they thought Western audiences would find it too sad, but Studio Ghibli later insisted on reverting it back to Miyazaki's original, silent ending to preserve this beautiful message about growing up!)

Dufore

Loved your reflection at the end of this one. Whenever a change is made in a business that many people consume there are bound to be people who cry out in protest against change and I won't even say its wrong of them. In your case for content creation they found your content during a season that appealed to them and they loved; it may be moving away from what captures their attention and their spark of joy. However for every one person you may lose for this reason you are likely to gain many more that are excited about the new content you are embracing that lets your joy and passion shine through. I for one believe the first content of yours I watched was the Lord of the Rings movies on youtube as I was searching for something to grind osrs alongside and as a funny twist of fate it was right before you started watching anime which I have been watching for years and years and the change really hooked me in to being a regular viewing and continuing to watch on patreon.

PG Modehouse

Joe Hisaishi and Hayao Miyazaki are one of those Golden Composer+Creator pairings that make magic together. Some of the other pairings I love are: Susumu Hirasawa and Satoshi Kon (Millennium Actress, Paprika, Paranoia Agent), Tsuneo Imahori and Yasuhiro Nightow (Trigun, Gungrave), Yoko Kanno and Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Terror In Resonance)

Ron B

I'm only starting this now for the first time, but regarding your comments about getting rid of the dub versions on YouTube, please don't! I'm always ambitious and WANT to enjoy anime in its original form of Japanese, but I'm finding that every time I do I tend to lose focus and drift to sleep even if I'm loving the content 🙈🙈 I kinda NEED to watch it in dub I'm finding so I can more easily relate with the voices as the story unfolds 😅.

Me

Why did you fade out the credits?
