What you guys described with how action movies are going, I feel like it's similar to Batman. Cause from what I know, originally he was more light hearted and goofy, kind of like the Adam West Batman show. And over time, they made him more broody and dark. Same thing is kind of happening to the action movies in question

I would posit that True Grit is one of the founding members of this genre. The premise is a girl needs to find someone tough enough to avenge her family and the only one who can do it is a grumpy old man with a gun famed for his violence. I think it resonated enough that it got a remake around the same time movies like Taken and Gran Torino were leaning into that.

16:42 --- Apparently, the term for this genre you are referring to is called by media personalities and pop culture critics as "geezer teasers" These often refer to movies that are 1) made over seas very cheaply 2) feature an aging celebrity and 3) weirdly enough, are often made by the same production company https://www.vulture.com/article/randall-emmett-movies.html no joke, the expendables series AND most Bruce Willis movies of the last 5-ish years were all done by this one guy, Randall Emmett.
