We left the rot behind.

QOTD: If you’re a Japanese national how frequently are katanas a passed down heirloom?

I doubt I will get a awnser to this but Young Justice had the scene of "You got a baby in there" so I wonder if that is the cartoon Brett was watching.

From my memory most of my Highschool Texas Panhandle football team was uncut, myself included.

I’m 29 and I always refer to people being dead as “passed away” every single time. For me, it just feels more respectful and I also agree with Ted that it’s just not as harsh as saying dead. That being said, it’s definitely not sheltering kids to say passed away. They’re not stupid, they know it means the same thing as being dead.

To weigh in on the circumcision conversation, Jewish people do it because it's a part of their religion. Most other people in the US do it because their dad did it and he did it because of his dad and that chain goes back to people in the 1800s believing that it kept boys from masterbating.

I'm 6 minutes into the video and I pause to go read the comments to see what anyone says about "passed away" and imagine my shock to see more than one person talking about circumcision.

Tom4s

Ted, could you do a compilation video, like a time lapse, of all the photos that Brett took accidentally?

Snonk

Oh man, the old 'why are americans commonly circumcised when all other european nations aren't" debate, an internet classic

Korbo

Ahh circumcision, a conversation I really don't want to touch with a 6 inch meat pole. (too crass?). I get why some people would put it in their dating profiles, I personally find uncut dicks kinda gross to look at, fortunately I'm a man so it's not really a problem, but if I was a woman I wouldn't want to develop feelings for someone only to find out I'm actively unattracted to their body.

My guy Ted casually dropping a deep cut with a Yoshi's Island level title.

Logan

Brett wanting it “really cut” is the best part of this episode.

So this is related to the dead situation. I use to be a hospital chaplain, I would go on call and have to help families who were worried in a therapeutic way. Counseling and what not. I also would do rounds like a doctor and ask for prayer request and just you know check on the general mental health of those in emergency situations. Well when I first started doing it (it was volunteer position) I had do some training. One of the big things is never use a metaphor for the word death/dead. If you were going to be with the doctor while telling a family a person had died do not say passed away, do not say no longer with us or anything like that because in a time of grief a person's brain will literally try to see the metaphor as something else. It is a psychological defense mechanism that can happen. Such as if you say passed away, they will sometimes assume a coma, or passed off to another hospital. The same with the term, "no longer with us". The family may assume that the person has moved to a different hospital. It was even more important to use the term death/dead and then offer to explain it to a child if the family can not or needs help in a child appropriate way. In other words on a level their brain can understand. Sometimes even with adults, if they lack experience with death you also sometimes have to explain it to them, not talking down to them, but also sometimes in a way a child would understand. In other words, the brain does weird things when going through grief and metaphors sometimes make people deny the situation. Anyways, just thoughts from personal/professional experience.

Also the whole Nazi story from Alex reminds me of Apt. Pupil

Thanks for sharing that, I found that interesting. I always just thought saying passed away is just being respectful.

I did it for a few years, I only had one death on my shift. The doctor was the one who told them thankfully. With that said a pastor friend of mine had a newish doctor drop the ball and said a patient had moved on and is no longer with us.... the family then kept insisting on asking where they took their relative. It was a mess I guess. Essentially it was a bad car accident so they just couldn't show the family the dead body. So yea the hospital had to show the family the dead body for they would believe the new doctor that he meant that the guy had died. Then my buddy was called in to be the chaplain. Another thing that you see on TV is when a doctor says, "I am sorry there is nothing else we can do". 9/10 times the family will say well find someone who can do something. Death/grief can do crazy things my dude. Now in normal speak, every day conversation, yea saying passed away I think is perfectly fine. By the time of the funeral passed away is 100% acceptable. As for children, not understanding what passed away means, that just requires cultural context and that is up the family to explain to the child, or a therapist, minister, or whatever.

The fact that this episode talks about circumcision and is called "Similar Wounds" lmao It's funny to me that circumcised guys would refer to each other as similar wounds 🤣😂

Skweeter

Except. It is natural, it is what humans are supposed to look like. I pray you one day date a woman and find out what intimacy means outside of superficial preferences. Europeans mostly don’t circumcise btw if you need a frame of reference

Korbo

That's cool thanks for pushing your opinions into me, super appreciate the uninvited rude, and also weirdly unrelated comment.

I'm against using euphemisms, with kids, because it ingrains ignorance. We've been having a huge culture war over trans people and their right to exist because for generations people used the words sex and gender interchangably. All because they don't want to use the correct term in schools. Because the word "sex" is "sinful" or some crap. Sex is biological, gender is sociological. So many have died over this tragically and unnecessarily. So yeah, don't lie to or confuse kids.
