Guessing the experiment in school was water and sodium? Certified classroom crowdpleaser.

Senior year of high-school, day 1: My Literature Teacher was laying out her plan for the year, which included going through Beowulf - and she was SO EXCITED about it (and made it sound super-exciting [at least to me]). She was talking about how each week we would read a part of the story, and then do some kind of Viking-related activity like design a family shield, do research on ancient Norse gods and beliefs, and all of these other dope activities. One of the other kids in my class went home and complained to their parent(s) that the 'crazy literature teacher was teaching Pagan stuff". The next time we had class, the teacher was visibly holding back tears and slowly packing up her stuff - she had gotten fired that morning and blacklisted from ever teaching in the district ever again. We had a series of uninterested substitutes for the rest of the year for that class. Our section on Beowulf was reduced to: "read this and write a book report on it by the end of the week" and that was it. I didn't do that assignment (or most of the others in that class because I was disheartened) and almost failed out of it but the substitute didn't care enough and gave me a D.

Yeah, I was gonna say something alkali like that or lithium/potassium. Sodium is definitely most common for that experiment, though.
