Appreciate the John Dies At The End bit, I read all 4 of those in like a week earlier this year

Mistress Frieren

After 5 minutes of a trail mix and linguistics discussion Alex saying "Anyway, the pizza doesn't have any of that" almost made me do a spit take with my tea.

My pride at Ted in yesterday's Ape Escape is only matched by my shame of him talking about the choking game today.

Edward Eagerton

I did read your whole comment. You made a bunch of shit up and pretended it's fact. If you can provide any sources, that would be great but until then you're just spreading misinformation and now doubling down on being incorrect.

Edward Eagerton

Brett is incorrect about acronym, they do not have to spell out an existing word. NASA is the classic example, as the word "NASA" was not an existing word before the acronym. An initialism is a word made of other letters where the letters are spelled out, such as FBI. I believe Brett is mistaking the word acronym for the word "backronym", which does have to use an existing word, such as SHIELD from Marvel or the DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act. I didn't do the choking game, but I did watch people do it. Lol

BTW Ted is right on the GORP thing.. Good Ole Raisins and Peanuts

Joshua Levine

Never heard trail mix called GORP before...

I knew kids who would do the choking game, but I knew too much about physiology to let them do it to me.

Pseudoverlord

Great job with the Fallingstar Beast! So, I didn't play the choking game specifically but I was roughhousing with an older kid when I was younger and he put me in a choke hold. I went fully unconscious for a little bit. Woke up covered in urine, ugh. They did the classic "shut up, don't tell your parents who are literally in the next room" thing. Kids are definitely dumb.

To make the situation even more convoluted Wikipedia says: "The American term gorp is often used by campers and hikers in North America. Some claim it's an acronym for "good ol' raisins and peanuts."[4] The Oxford English Dictionary cites a 1913 reference to the verb gorp, meaning "to eat greedily," so the acronym may be folk etymology or a backronym"

QOTD: Yeah unfortunately I kind grew up like the little rascals. The other neighborhood kids and I would trespass all over everyones property, get in fights, climb on and jump off of houses, roll down hills in barrels, blow things up. But i digress. We did play the chocking game. It was when one person would take several deep breaths then hold their breath for as long as they could while another kid bear hugs them from behind. Its basically a free version of whippets. It was terrible, basically a proto tiktok trend from the mid 2000s. HOWEVER... I do have one funny story about it. Im at 12 year old, I'm walking up to my friend David's house and I see another friend burst out the front door and sprint down the road. I go inside and ask what just happened. David tells me they played the knockout game with our friend John. While he was passed out the other kids changed all the clocks in the house a few hours forward. When John woke up he asked what happened and what time it was. They said 8 p.m. (an hour after curfew) and john fucking burst out of that house for fear of his redneck dad beating him for being home late. I know its terrible but thats what kids do when left to themselves sometimes.

I can clear this one up. Brett was right in that there is a further qualification needed for an initialism to be an acronym. It's simple that the word needs to be pronounced, rather than the letters read out. So 'CSI' is just an initialism, because we pronounce it "C - S - I" Whereas 'NASA' is an acronym because we turn those letters into a phonetically pronounced word. That word doesn't have to be a preexisting word (as is the case with SHIELD, of The PATRIOT Act.) If it is a preexisting word, i dunno, maybe there's an extra term for that. But it isn't a requirement for the definition of acronym. Thanks for sending me down that rabbit hole guys. I can say I learned something today : )

This episode stirred up all the hidden master linguists! Jeez! 😅

Haven’t read those books but the movie is trippy as hell.

QotD: Yes, my experience with the choking game sounds pretty similar to Ted. Middle school in the midwest and at a friend's house. Some older kids were choking each other until they passed out. I tried it once, but I thought it was weird and never tried it again. I told my Dad about it when he came to pick me up. All the parents got really mad and had talks with us about not choking each other. The older kids got in trouble. Also, Brett unequipped the gloves partway through the Tree fight. That's why the damage was so low at the end.

I loved how surprised Brett was by choking game, & also how Alex thought it was the same as a "boys being boys" thing. Choking game was about getting high by depriving your brain of oxygen. It's terribly dangerous & awful, I knew a girl in 7th grade who died doing that with her friends.
