For our first Curations By Kira Patreon release (one more to come soon), we wanted something that feels fun to handle at the table and looks the way an ooze actually behaves in play.

This is our Gelatinous Ooze, a sectioned miniature that can drape over miniatures, flow over terrain, and jiggle in your hand like a bowl full of jelly (obligatory Christmas reference now out of the way).

Instead of a solid block, the ooze is built from vertical segments that are all connected in the center so the sections can shift while staying attached. On the table, that lets you:

Settle the ooze over a miniature to show that a character has been swallowed

Bend the shape slightly over edges, steps, or terrain features

Give the creature a wobbly, animated feel when you move it or pick it up

Included in this release

You receive:

(Support-free) Large Gelatinous Ooze (2 x 2 footprint)

(Support-free) Huge Gelatinous Ooze (3 x 3 footprint)

D6 fidget in the same segmented style, designed to be a satisfying desk or table toy (light-supports for bottom numbering)

Files for this month are provided to active Drake and Ancient Dragon patrons through Google Drive during the release month. Once the models are available on MyMiniFactory, you will receive a reward link so you can add them to your MyMiniFactory library.

Printing notes

Both gelatinous cube models are designed to print support free because no one likes supports!

General FDM printing recommendations

Print upright so that the segments stand vertically

Material: PLA

Nozzle size: 0.4 mm

Layer height: 0.2 mm (finer layer heights are fine, just adjust top/bottom layers accordingly)

Top layers: 4 (0.8 mm)

Bottom layers: 3 (0.6 mm)

Walls: 2 (0.8 mm)

Infill: 10 - 20 percent gyroid (20% lightning infill will also work to save on filament cost)

No supports required under normal conditions

The D6 fidget uses similar settings, however, supports are recommended just on the bottom of the model to fill in the numbering.

Note: this model is not designed for resin printing due to the fine interlocking mechanisms inside the model.

Thank you!

Thank you for supporting our first monthly release. We are excited to hear how this ooze performs in your games and to see your printed versions. Let us know what other creatures, tools, or accessories you would like to see in future packs!

Update:

We've uploaded updated V8 models of the Gelatinous Cube miniatures as some users were finding mesh errors that caused the cube sections to merge with some slicers.

Some of the sections in the model seem to be unable to move independently, is this intentional? I'm trying to understand the mechanics of this and that doesn't seem like it would match the images/videos of the model's movement.

Curations By Kira

Some of the sections may get slightly stuck together from filament strands during the printing process but you should be able to flex them apart to free each section. Are you printing the large or huge size miniature?

There also could have been a mesh issue that I couldn't see on my end but it picked up with your slicer. I've re-uploaded some version 6 models that have been remeshed, let me know if these look better in your slicer preview!

Jessica Sorenson

Made it today. Followed all print instructions and it worked perfectly. Two arrows broke off right away. Otherwise, a solid build! Excited to give this Christmas present. :D

Chuck Westfield

I've been struggling with this print. some of the friction pads fuse. This really takes some tuning.

Curations By Kira

Hmm, it shouldnt need to be slicer dependent! I'll take a look at the mesh again and try to troubleshoot why it still fuses in Cura. Note: if Cura is prompting you to use "mesh correcting" tools, definitely dont use them as i think that's what is causing the issue. Thanks for reporting this!

Curations By Kira

Okay, I've meticulously exported and remeshed each segment separately. Slices on Cura without issue now! Please check out the v8 model and let me know if you're still seeing any issues :)

Chuck Westfield

Thanks for taking another pass at this. Really appreciate it. I tested with Cura 5.2.1 https://imgur.com/a/tQTFVjV It didnt bark at me about watertight etc. but the slicing engine still made bad choices with the outer wall (red). I'm printing an attempt (v6) with Ideamaker and it's looking good. I'll probably try Orca with the Huge one if the winds don't knock out power tomorrow.

Curations By Kira

Oh man, despite being our namesake Cura definitely giving us a hard time on this one! It looks like it should still print and stay together but I'll continue to make tweaks with this model tomorrow just to make sure it's up to the same standard as when printed with other slicers.

Chuck Westfield

I'm happy to throw it into this slicer if that's helpful but I spent too much time to trust it with anything print in place now.

Ben Coburn

Hey, tried printing a few different ways using cura and ideamaker and it comes out completely fused together. Any tips for me? UPDATE - Used the V8 version and worked like a charm on cura! Thank you its a great design!

Curations By Kira

Hi Ben, are you using the v8 model? Earlier models had issues with those slicers specifically. You can double check that the model will be printing as separate sections in the model preview window of the slicer too. If all that looks good, you should be able to work apart the pieces although they might be a little stuck together at first due to stringing

Ben Coburn

Hey just following up, I tweaked my setting a little bit (made my walls horizontal expansion -0.08mm) and while its still halfway through, its looking nice and separated! Super psyched for this to work its an awesome concept.

Ben Coburn

Alas, the connections between columns snapped while trying to separate the bottom pieces with my xacto knife. I did realize I hadnt been printing the V8 version as you mentioned, so off to the races with your updated model!
