Great! The Dark Knight trilogy is one of the best trilogies of all time

Noah

Before watching. The DC fandom has always been very divisive in contrast to Marvel. This trilogy kinda ruined peoples perception of DC:s characters (along with the Injustice games) and started the myth of DC being mature and for adults whilst Marvel is for kids and families. Nolan was never big into comics and needed the help of Goyer (the other screenwriter) to adapt the comic-elements of Batman. He grounded Batman, made it more realistic and darker with more social commentary. That worked wonderfully and The Dark Knight-trilogy is one of the best received trilogys of all time. But Warner Brother thought it was a winning formula for DC:s whole arsenal of characters and Nolan helped produce Man Of Steel, Zack Snyder's first film and the start of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Some people loved it, some people thought he commited character-assasination. Zack Snyder ultimately left the projects in 2017 when his daughter commited suicide. Until that point, he had already made Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman (both divisive) and Warner Brothers released Justice League shortly afterwards, which bombed and flopped. The studio started to interfere in the production and took away Snyder's control and gave it to Joss Whedon (the director of Avengers and Age Of Ultron). It was a disaster and some stuff got out which cancelled Whedon. DC then had years without any real direction, during which they released movies like Aquaman, Shazam!, Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad and it wss after that that WB started to work a deal with James Gunn to lead a new cinematic universe. The Rock tried to take over DC in the meantime with Black Adam but it bombed and it ended. During the pandemic however, WB needed something big to release on HBO and got Zack Snyder back to release his cut of Justice League (a 4 hour version) which got well received. This only encouraged his fans to push for the restoration of Zack Snyder's universe. When Gunn got in charge, Cavill's Superman had already appeared in an end-credit scene in Black Adam which The Rock forced. Gunn however had signed on to start a new universe and needed to fire Cavill, just months after Cavill though he was reinstated as Superman. This sparked outrage by Snyder's fans and since then, it has been an open war online between those who want Zack Snyder back, and those who doesn't and wants to see the new direction by James Gunn. It has only gotten worse since Paramount and Netflix is in a bidding-war for Warner Brothers. The main difference between DC and Marvel imo has been that DC has been more willing to give creative control to the filmmakers and directors, whilst Marvel has been led by Kevin Feige. Most Marvel-projects have similar tones and used fo focus on setting up the shared story, whilst DC have very varied tones and let their movies be their own thing. Aquaman, The Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman are very different in style and tone. It will only continue in the new DCU by James Gunn. They've done Superman for families, Peacemaker for adults and they're working on a full on horror movie called Clayface (which wrapped up filming this week). Other than that, we have a Lanterns Tv-series, a Superman-sequel and a Supergirl movie in production. Robert Pattinson's Batman, The Joker movies is under the label elseworlds and is separate from the DC Universe continuity. Gunn is a director and know the importance of integrity in storytelling. Might be much to get through but it'd be interesting to have you react to DC. Take it from someone that enjoys both Marvel, DC, Zack Snyder and James Gunn. I kinda feel like DC has more iconic heroes than Marvel though and that the potential is higher.

Well the voice only gets worse😅 I'll be coming back to some of the things you said here when you watch The Dark Knight Rises, I think you'll understand why eventually. Also, the tv-series The Penguin (the one that focuses on The Penguin from the 2022 Batman) explores corruption, crime and those things in depth from a different perspective. Bruce's so privileged that he can't understand it properly. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. I think it received the most Emmy awards by any show released in the 2020s.

IM BATMAN

Danny Steele

Sorry about the length of this post. Most of the information is derived from the comics and many or many not relate to other stories in DC media. I liked this one, it was very inspirational to more recent incarnations of Batman. First off I should note that Batman is the true identity and Bruce is just a mask. Batman Begins is heavily influenced by Frank Miller’s Batman Year One( which focuses on the first year of Batman’s fight against crime and the start of his relationship with Jim Gordon). The whole sequence with the Batman using the bats to escape from the GCPD is taken straight from the Batman Year One comic. In the comics the entrance to the Batcave is behind a grandfather clock when the hands are set to 10:48 pm, which is the exact time Bruce’s parents were murdered by Joe Chill, a random mugger with a gun( which explains Bruce’s deep aversion to guns). His father was an extremely gifted surgeon and his mother is a social activist, both used their money to support social causes to benefit the poor of Gotham. If you want to drive this Batmobile among other versions then check out Batman Arkham Knight each Batmobile has a couple of tracks that recreate moments from their respective movies. Alfred Pennyworth is the Wayne family butler and is a father figure and confidant to Bruce so is extremely important to him. Alfred also served as a source of dry wit and humor which has endured him to fans for years. Interestingly, prior to his employment with the Waynes he was a highly skilled British special forces operative. Michael Caine’s portrayal was perfect. Lucius Fox was made more famous due to his appearance in this series with the great portrayal by Morgan Freeman. He usually runs the day to day activities of Wayne Enterprises. He is usually aware of Bruce’s secret life and supports him by obtaining the gadgets that he uses, but doesn’t ask questions as to not be put in a position to compromise Batman if he is captured. Jim Gordon is usually depicted the same, he is a tough, fair and honest cop who wants to make Gotham a better place, among many corrupt and dirty cops. This is set early in Gordon’s career. He is the father of Barbara Gordon ( the original Batgirl). The whole Batman disappearing in the middle of Gordon talking is an extremely common part of the Batman and Gordon relationship and has even become a joke in some Batman media. Rachel Dawes is an orginal character. However she was inspired by several obscure characters, Julie Madison( childhood friend and former girlfriend), Silver St. Cloud( another former girlfriend), and Gilda Dent( wife to Harvey Dent). I actually had to look some of these up because I was unaware of them. She serves as another person that is trying to make Gotham a better place, and she is a potential love interest for Bruce. Ra’s al Ghul is one of Batman’s most troublesome villains. His is one of the few villains that knows Batman’s true identity. His portrayal in this movie is good, but is missing a couple of key parts. He is around 600 years old and he has been keeping himself alive with a special pit of chemicals called a Lazarus Pit, which can bring the dead back to life however it has an extremely minor side-effect of temporary insanity. The more Ra’s uses it the less stable he becomes. He is Batman equal in both physically and mentally causing Batman to have to be creative in defeating him. His usual scheme is usually the same he wants to restore the natural balance to the Earth and then rebuild a utopian society with himself at the helm, even if it means killing billions of people. If Ra’s is killed, it is kinda implied that by the end of the story that his followers have retrieved his body and then take him to a Lazarus Pit which has revived him and that he is sulking and planning anew. He is not one of Bruce’s mentors in the comics, that is something unique to this movie. The relationship is complicated even more by Ra’s daughter, Talia al Ghul who is in love with Bruce and he somewhat reciprocates these feelings and she even bears him a son Damien, who is the current Robin. Ra’s desires an heir to take over the League after his death( or his body has is unable to be revived), but the root of their conflict is the willingness to end a life. Jonathan Crane also known as Scarecrow. He was created in 1941 and has become an enduring villain. In the comics, he was a brilliant professor of psychology at Gotham University with a specialty in fear and phobias. This exterior hides a sadistic man who is obsessed with studying fear. He does not want power, wealth, or influence, but he see others as merely test subjects in his fear experiments. His “fear toxin” , a hallucinogenic drug that shows people their biggest fear and can even be fatal after prolonged exposure and it is kinda a trademark of his schemes. In the Arkham games, he has a Freddy-like glove of syringes to inject his fear toxin into people along with the more standard airborne version. Carmine Falcone is usually a pretty standard mob boss and is head of the mob in Gotham and his depiction is based on Marlon Brando’s character from the Godfather. He is an acquaintance of the Wayne family, but this relationship is purely social in nature. In some comics, he is the illegitimate father to Selina Kyle(Meow!).
