What I like about reactions to these historic films, especially war films, is the questions reactors ask. Invariably they feel vulnerable to backlash for asking questions. Don't. There are no stupid questions. Almost every question I've heard a reactor ask about the great war films has been superb. Always ask the simple questions, they're the best ones. My dad was wounded outside St. Vith right near the end of the Battle of the Bulge about four months after this operation. He was with the the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team, an independent outfit not attached to any airborne division. There is a lot of debate about when that battle "ended". I wish there had been a good film made about it. Hollywood only attempted one, and it was a sad disaster. Anyway, the gliders were a part of the Airborne TOE (Table of Organization and Equipment) and were used to deliver equipment such as light, or "pack" howitzers, jeeps, ammunition, etc. They also held additional troops who were not jump qualified. An example from Dad's experience is when the 442nd Nissei was delivered along with his outfit to southern France in August of 1944. The Nissei wasn't an Airborne outfit, so they rode in the gliders. It was just a way to bring extra people and stuff you might need.

I love this movie. Thank you for this. Audrey Hepburn said this movie "was in fact where I lived. That bridge [in Arnhem] I walked across for years, because I used to leave home, walk down one way, walk across that bridge to the music school where I studied ballet. So in effect it [A Bridge Too Far] was my war. We were evacuated before that battle started, but i was there when the Airbornes landed and everything, and then we left."

So a few things. There are two other classics in the same vein. The Longest Day (1962) the definitive movie about D-Day and Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) about the attack on Pearl Harbor. A few actors you missed: British acting legend Sir Laurence Olivier who played Doctor Spaander Maximilian Schell who played Lt. Gen. Bittrich, Schell won an Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar for the masterpiece film Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). Liv Ullmann, one of the most famous Swedish actresses, who played Kate Ter Horst Denholm Elliott who payed the meteorologist was Marcus Brody in Indiana Jones John Ratzenberger who played Cliff Clavin in Cheers From Edward Fox you should definitely check out The Day of the Jackal (1973) based on the book by Frederick Forsyth. The we don't have the space to accept your surrender scene was just dry British humor. To my amazement this seems to trip most reactors as well as the German soldier with the white flag.

What’s up Coby? I’m really glad I watched this. I don’t know if I’ve seen this many brilliant performances in a single movie. So well written. I think it really brings home the message of how pointless, and horrific war is. What a great cast.

I had seen this movie once when i was a kid, I enjoyed and all the actors, but felt it was a little too long, I feel the length was trying to make it an epic, also with the cast, but felt it would have done better at two hours and not almost three. I still enjoyed it.

What a great movie! I hadn't seen it in about 25 years. As you said, the cast was spectacular. I do wish Robert Redford had a bit more airtime. One of these days, you need to have a Robert Redford poll.
