SUPERMAN II (1980) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

Superman II is a 1980 superhero film directed by Richard Lester and written by Mario Puzo and David and Leslie Newman from a story by Puzo based on the DC Comics character Superman. It is the second installment in the Superman film series and a sequel to Superman (1978). A direct continuation of the first Superman, Christopher Reeve reprises his role as Superman. The returning cast includes Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, Ned Beatty, Sarah Douglas, Margot Kidder, Marc McClure and Jack O'Halloran. The film's plot features the arrival of General Zod and his comrades on Earth, following their release from the Phantom Zone (a prison that had been made by the people of Krypton). Zod seeks revenge for imprisonment by pursuing the planet's last son, Kal-El, alias “Superman.” As a result, Kal-El, who had unknowingly freed them, must now face threats from his long-dead home planet. Zod also allies with Lex Luthor, who still aspires to world domination. The hero also faces an internal conflict, torn between his duties as Earth's hero and his desire to live amongst them solely as Clark Kent, and especially with his love interest, Lois Lane. Great reaction, one of my favorites as a kid.

Rj Knebel

Hi Coby. Can't wait to see this with you

Harvey Lee

Hey Coby , I'm looking forward to this definitely !!😃

Mark Knight

Hey Coby, hope you’re having a great day. I can’t wait to watch this tonight. I like that in the last one you figured out that the glasses wasn’t the disguise it was the whole persona. But I think the brilliant part was that Christopher Reeve gave both characters an innocent quality. The sincerity of his performance is what did it for me. Are you going to be doing Superman 3?

John A

Coby, not sue what you will think of Superman III, if you decide to watch it, but your comments at the end, make me think you might like it.. I hope you do.

John A

Do you plan to watch the Donner cut of Superman II? also, which did you like better I or II?

Darren Harrison

A fun reaction for my personal favorite Superman movie. They did an excellent job in balancing all the elements that worked so well in the first one. Being such a fan of the Clark-Lois relationship I think you should be warned that Lois is only briefly in “Superman III” and the love interest is a former high school flame Lana Lang. One of the criticisms is it’s a comedy vehicle for Richard Pryor, but you can make your own judgement. But I am glad you had fun with “Superman II”.

Larrys1254

You’re 💯% correct that Lois was far too shallow and that Clark/Superman deserves better.

Larrys1254

For what it’s worth, if you want to see more Superman I’d suggest moving on to the Henry Cavill version of Superman. The character of Lois is a much more respectful and substantial person who develops a more meaningful relationship with Clark/Superman. Then if you’re still interested, I’d suggest watching sequels after that that have Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. If you do get to the “Justice League” I’d suggest the Zack Snyder version. I enjoyed them all, but have to admit I’ve never been anywhere near as invested in any superhero movies as you were with the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies. It was a lot of fun seeing you get into it so much.

Superman 3 is pretty bad. I’d strongly suggest watching Man of Steel next - generally considered the best Superman movie/performance…and would be kind of cool to watch after seeing these OG movies

The Illiterate Mediums

Great reaction as always. I don’t think Clark wants Lois to fall for him, but I have to admit I like your idea of Lois falling for him and realizing he is Superman. Also, watching the way you figure things out is one of the best things about your reactions. I’m always impressed by the way your mind works. Don’t pay any attention to any comment that says otherwise.

(How Superman got his powers back) Clark showed Lois the green crystal and told her it helped built the fortress, she took it and sat down when she got up she left the green crystal with her purse and walked away. When Clark came back to see if he could get his powers back the crystal was right where Lois left it. And that’s how he was able to get his powers back. The green crystal wasn’t with all the other crystals that were destroyed.

The Donner Cut will answer a few of your questions. I like both versions and do wish that Donner was able to complete his version, back in 79-80. Superman III is a guilty pleasure film for me! It has a deeper meaning for my, dating back to when I was little in the 80s! It isn’t as great as the first two films, but is still very entertaining…especially Chris Reeve’s acting is great! Please check out both the Donner Cut and part III.

Max du Coudray

General Zod is played by respected British actor Terence Stamp.

Darren Harrison

It is a shame that Donner was not given the opportunity in 1979, but I guess we will never know. The released Donner cut uses rehearsal footage for scenes that were never shot and a different opening (no Eiffel Tower) and a different mechanism whereby Lois learns Clark’s secret. Because of these differences and the jarring quality of rehearsal footage I prefer the theatrical version. The one plus is that Donner had Brando whereas Lester had to make do with Susannah York.

Mark Knight

I had similar issues with the scene when he wiped Lois’s memory. So I get it. I also agreed you with about how shallow she is, not being interested in Clark until she finds out he’s Superman. I don’t completely dislike her character, I just find that aspect of her annoying. I realize she’s written that way intentionally though. I much more prefer how Mary Jane is written in the Spider-Man movies. I felt like the resolution was so much more satisfying.

In the whole superman timeline it gets a bit messed up, DC's Superman Returns 2006 is seen as the 3rd installment basically because original 3 and 4 are so bad..4 particularly..The quest for peace..gets political because of the cold war and the whole nuke situation in the 80s early 90s..so I'd watch superman returns because after fighting Zod superman leaves earth to look for krypton..then guess what... Superman Returns to earth.😂😂 They really imagined that title.😂😂 If your trying to decide what film to watch next...in my opinion.

Peter Verdi

Where to go next from this? Personally (and this is just my humble opinion) you have seen the must-see movies of the Christopher Reeve era (except for the Donner cut). For a totally different vibe I‘d suggest you watch Man of Steel (Henry Cavill) next. I‘m curious what you think of that.

Matt Robinson

Just gotta say, Coby, you were on a role with this one. “He’s too busy playing house in the igloo.”, “do they have like a big ice bed”, “listen to Reba McIntyre”…literally laughed out loud!

Cliff Adams

I suggest reading Larry Niven’s Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex… available at his website.

Bob Nicholas

Ursa, the female kryptonian, the slots on her outfit get longer as the movie goes on.

Gregg Dukes

In my honest opinion and there are a lot of good opinions on here. I'm stuck in the Christopher Reeves era of Superman. He is so good! So sad what happened to him but I get goose bumps like you did Coby when he first turns into Superman. I do love Superman 3 as well. It has a different twist then 1 and 2 so be prepared for that. And some different characters, just fyi. It does include Richard Pryor in the movie as well which I love as an actor. He was great in Brewster's Millions. Another movie you should check out! 😉 I can't speak about Superman Returns, I've never have actually seen it. But Superman 3 is fun with a bit of newness, and new twists. Superman has a battle with himself, pretty cool. And that's all I say. 😁👍

can you check out "The Terminal" -Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta Jones, Stanley Tucci, Diego Luna, Zoe Saldaña, directed by Spielberg

The actor who played ZOD was Terence Stamp, who played the character Bernadette Bassinger, a transgender woman, in the 1994 film "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." he also played Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.

Mark Pitta

There was something about Margo Kidder that didn’t feel right. I would have liked Debra Winger or Sally Field but it might have been a height issue.
