THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

The African Queen is a 1951 adventure film adapted from the 1935 novel of the same name by C. S. Forester. The film was directed by John Huston and produced by Sam Spiegel and John Woolf. The screenplay was adapted by James Agee, John Huston, John Collier and Peter Viertel. It was photographed in Technicolor by Jack Cardiff and has a music score by Allan Gray. The film stars Humphrey Bogart (who won the Academy Award for Best Actor, his only Oscar) and Katharine Hepburn with Robert Morley, Peter Bull, Walter Gotell, Richard Marner and Theodore Bikel. The African Queen was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1994, and the Library of Congress deemed it "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." Lovin' the old classics! Directed by Anjelica Huston's dad.

The full watch along reaction was fantastic. Thank you!

Great movie and great reaction. Always nice to watch a film with a fan. And you can’t go wrong with Hepburn in “The Philadelphia Story.”

Are you planning to watch any other Bogart movies? "The Treasure of Sierra Madre" (1948) "The Roaring Twenties" (1939) "The Petrified Forest" (1936) These are some suggestions

Another Bogart film: Key Largo (1948) also starring Lauren Bacall and Edward G. Robinson. Fun fact: the original African Queen is actually docked at Key Largo, FL. I think it’s available for tours.

I feel your pain Coby, mosquitoes seem to love me too. I’d spray insect repellent on me, when I worked outside. I think it actually attracted them instead of repelling them. 🤣 Very good film. My grandmother had this really old picture of her aunt. She looked just like Kathrine Hepburn in this movie, right down to the dress.

I can't tell whether Coby clocked that they were referring to World War I this time, not World War II.

Flounder

I was lucky enough to see this at the Paramont movie palace in Oakland. What a special place! If you ever have the chance to watch a movie there don’t miss it.

I'd recommend On Golden Pond for you Coby. Even if you just watch on your own, I know you'll really enjoy it. One of Kate's best ever! She was 74 at the time. :)

One of Katherine Hepburn's best: "The Lion In Winter" (1968) Something similar that I think Coby would like: "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" (1957) - Robert Mitchum, Deborah Kerr "Legend of the Lost" (1957) - John Wayne, Sophia Loren "The Guns of Navarone" (1961) based on a book by Alistair MacLean

If you’re looking for more Humphrey Bogart, there’s “The Maltese Falcon”, “The Treasure of Sierra Madre”, and “The Caine Mutiny”. Maltese Falcon and Sierra Madre were also directed by John Huston.
