ALIEN NATION (1988) - Full Watch Along

Alien Nation is a 1988 American science fiction action film written by Rockne S. O'Bannon and directed by Graham Baker. The ensemble cast features James Caan, Mandy Patinkin, and Terence Stamp. Its initial popularity inaugurated the beginning of the Alien Nation media franchise. The film depicts the assimilation of the "Newcomers", an alien race settling in Los Angeles, much to the initial dismay of the local population. The plot integrates the neo-noir and buddy cop film genres with a science fiction theme, centering on the relationship between a veteran police investigator (Caan) and an extraterrestrial (Patinkin), the first Newcomer detective. The duo probe a criminal underworld while attempting to solve a homicide. Alien Nation explores murder, discrimination and science fiction.

This was made into a TV series the following year (1989-1990 TV season). They used the aliens as a cover to have episodes about bigotry and prejudice. Additionally, they went beyond the typical story lines and included stories about things like youth gangs which often form in immigrant communities, about criminals from within the immigrant community that target their own people, and also showed how people who are open to the newcomers can be targeted by others in the majority. They also leaned into the opportunity to have the "outsider's" perspective with the newcomers puzzled by aspects of human culture that we take for granted, as well as humor like a character commenting that the sour milk vintage was a "good week". This was a full, old fashioned 24-ep syndicated season with a double-length (90min/2 hr w/ commercials) pilot episode, not a short streaming season like modern shows. It was not renewed for a second season, but instead they made 5x made-for TV movies instead of a second season.

Not sure if you noticed, but the make-up department did a tremendous job with the Newcomer head prosthetics. They are not all copies, but rather each Newcomer has a unique pattern of spotting: different size and shapes of spots, as well as a range of colors from browns and blacks to pinks.

Mandy Patinkin and James Caan and an early 90s TV series. What's not to like?

I had forgotten all about this movie. I hadn't seen this in years. I might be wrong, but I think they made a part 2 and a series after this.

I really liked the TV series. in fact, if you remember there was one episode that everyone watched. It was the talk at the time.

Never thought would see a reaction on this one. not a great movie, but I always enjoyed it and like the TV series and TV movies done after the series ended. Sad to hear the news that Terence Stamp passed away, I was hoping to meet General Zod.
