SUPERMAN III (1983) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

Superman III is a 1983 superhero film directed by Richard Lester from a screenplay by David Newman and Leslie Newman based on the DC Comics character Superman. It is the third installment in the Superman film series and the sequel to Superman II (1980). The film stars Christopher Reeve, Richard Pryor, Jackie Cooper, Marc McClure, Annette O'Toole, Annie Ross, Pamela Stephenson, Robert Vaughn, and Margot Kidder. While the movie itself is not even close in quality compared to the first two, Christopher Reeve looks his absolute best in Superman III and I would argue that he did some of his best work in the role during the third one as well.

The last time I heard someone say “team Lana” was when Smallville was on. That brought back so many memories, when you said that. Annette O’Toole played Lana Lang and she is married to Michael McKean. She also played as Martha Kent on Smallville years later. The artificial Kryptonite, would inspire two different types of kryptonite: red (which makes Superman apathetic and bad) and black (which separated him into two people) Gene Hackman didn’t return because of the whole Richard Donner incident. Margot claimed that the producers reduced her role to a cameo, due to her support of Donner. Christopher Reeve did earn universal praise (despite the film’s mixed reactions), for his triple performance. The super computer was a stand in for a major Superman villain called Brainiac and Vera turning into a cyborg, was the most wtf moment; from when I first saw this as a little boy in the 80s.

Keep in mind that both II and III were directed by Richard Lester; who was not only known for directing The Three Musketeers films for the Salkinds, but was also known for directing The Beatles in their first two feature films: A Hard Day’s Night and Help!. So he was known for the type of humor shown in both movies. He tried to do it here, but audiences felt they went too comedic and not as semi-serious as they were on the first film.

It’s so weird how Patreon organizes the videos in the feed. I logged on and saw Superman 3 at the top of my feed. I never thought to look at the date! When I commented to you in Cami’s premiere about how I thought your reaction was great, I thought you had just released it, not 6 months ago lol! Now I see you have so many Superman reactions, I must watch them all. 😁
