This. Was. Awesome. No, I’m not watching The Fifth Element - but I wore my Leeloo wig in honor of the director Luc Besson and, just as I thought I would, absolutely loved this movie. 🧡 Reaction highlights up on YouTube next Wednesday November 19th! 🖤

LA FEMME NIKITA (1990) - Full Watch Along

La Femme Nikita, released as Nikita in France, is a 1990 French-language action thriller film written and directed by Luc Besson. The film stars Anne Parillaud as the title character, a criminal who is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering a policeman during the armed robbery of a pharmacy. Her government handlers fake her death and recruit her as a professional assassin. After intense training, she starts a career as a killer, where she struggles to balance her work with her personal life.

My first Foreign film. A gateway drug.

Holy shit... Nice Movie Pick. I love this movie. I was into Anime as a kid in the 80s and 90s. Gundam Battlesuit, Appleseed, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, and Ninja Scroll. If not for them, I would never have watched La Femme Nikita, and this movie Rocks! There is another little gem from Anne Parillaud you'll have fun checking out at some point. Innocent Blood - 1992. It's a fun flick, and Annie Kills in that movie as well. Okay, I know what I'm doing tonight. Dinner and a Movie with Coby.

Point of No Return (1993) is a serviceable follow up with Bridget Fonda and Gabriel Byrne even if you don't end up watching it for the channel. Saw that when it came out on HBO or Cinemax at the time, I think, and that's what led me to watching this original version La Femme Nikita back then. EDIT: I'd also recommend the two Hanna entries, one foreign film (2011) that Amazon remade into a series in 2019, if you like this niche genre. And, yeah, in the original (iirc), she was sentenced to death. Not sure why we got a dubbed version that said life sentence instead.

Luc Besson did an amazing French film “The Big Blue” in 1988 starring Jean Reno about the world of free diving. It is a story about two friends from Greece that reunite later in life and compete. This film is well done but VERY difficult to find. It went through a couple versions, the best (in my opinion) being the US release which the music score was by Bill Conti (Rocky movies, The Right Stuff, Karate Kid flicks) which was spectacular but only released on VHS and Laser Disc. The Director’s cut which is the only thing available now, has a score that many marvel over by Eric Serra which my opinion is terrible and distracts the film. It is mainly synthesizer music which doesn’t seem to flow with the film. But anyway, beyond that, I found a copy for purchase on YouTube which is the only place I’ve found in existence but worthwhile experiencing this gem.

I’ll definitely check this out. This one I’ve seen, but it’s been a minute. Hey Leelo do you know when Coby is coming back? 🤣 That was actually a great costume.

Great pick by the patron. I'd forgotten how good this movie is. I'd recommend Luc Besson's second feature "Subway" (1985). It's a quirky little film, with the typical Besson directing flair, but also a lot of charm. Jean Reno makes an obligatory appearance.

Jean Reno's assassin movie was called "The Professional" when released in the US & Canada both in theaters and home video (VHS, Laser Disc, DVD, & Blu-Ray). "Leon" was only added in the last 5-10 years on streaming services. Anne Parillaud was in the US movies "Innocent Blood" (1992) and "The Man In The Iron Mask" (1998). Tcheky Karyo was the villain in "Bad Boys" (1995) The composer Eric Serra also made the move to US movies.

Good similar: "Keeping Up With The Joneses" (2016) "Ronin" (1998) "R.E.D." (2010) "Grosse Pointe Blank" (1997) "Killers" (2010) "The Eiger Sancton" (1975) "The Day of the Jackal" (1973) "Three Days of the Condor" (1975)

The large pistol that Bob gives Nikita in the restaurant is a Desert Eagle. Originally made by IMI, it is also made under license in the US by Magnum Research in Minnesota. It is available in 3 chamberings: .357 magnum, .44 magnum, and .50 Action Express. based on the number of rounds that Nikita fired before reloading in the kitchen, this one is .50 AE. In real life, it is an awkward cannon, but Hollywood likes it. It is the same as the pistols carried by Deadpool, by Peacemaker in "The Suicide Squad", and by Arnold in "Last Action Hero". The rifle that Nikita assembles in the bathroom in Venice is the "Universal Army Rifle" (AUG) by the Austrian company Steyr. This is another one that Hollywood likes and uses in a lot of movies because of the plastic chassis, futuristic styling, and bullpup configuration.

This was my request! :-D I'm so glad that you liked it, Coby! In addition to the stylish visuals and the amazing performances, I love the soundtrack! It sets the tone perfectly! I loved that you recognized Jean Reno's name in the credits and it was fun watching your excitement when you realized who was coming up in the elevator. :-) This was 4 years before "Leon: The Professional", so obviously Luc Besson knew that he would be perfect to play a hitman in that later movie. When the movie was being filmed, Anne Parillaud (Nikita) was 29 or 30 years old (as compared to the 24 years old Nikita was at the end of the movie). Tchéky Karyo (Bob) was 6½ years older than her. (He died just last month at the age of 72.) I never got the impression that Nikita had any significant romantic interest in Bob. He was obviously attracted to her (any man would be), but I think she just thought of him as a friend. Then again, perhaps the fact that Marco tore up the note that she left for Bob indicates that there was more fondness there than I realized. Incidentally, perhaps the word you were trying to think of instead of "mission" or "job" was "assignment". I was surprised that you noticed the Sid Vicious poster on the wall in her room. Have you seen the movie "Sid and Nancy"? It's about the chaotic relationship between Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. Gary Oldman plays Sid Vicious and is absolutely amazing in the role! I'm always amazed at how Gary Oldman can convincingly play characters that are 100% different from any other character he has played. For example, Zorg in "The Fifth Element", Stansfield in "Leon: The Professional", Dracula in "Bram Stoker's Dracula", and Rosencrantz in "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead". I'm guessing that "Sid and Nancy" probably wouldn't work very well with YouTube's annoying algorithm, but be sure to check it out on your own if you have an interest in The Sex Pistols. Lastly, I'm looking forward to seeing some vacation snapshots of your eventual trip to Venice! :-)

Coby is a genius. I saw that this was dropping today on YT. Then I saw that I would have to wait until 7pm. NAW,…Hell Naw. I can’t wait all F’ing day. So, now I’m team Coby. BTW: so many edits on this version; but I’m glad that it still “plays”.

I'm glad I had the day off to catch up on the movies I missed last month. This is a movie I've never even heard of before.

Hey I am a Bond fan hahahaha. This was my first time watching this movie, I enjoyed it, I love Leon: The Professional a lot more, but this was good. I will have to give the TV series a try.

I saw this in the theater when it first came to America. And multiple times since. I own in on Prime Video. And I really enjoyed watching it again with you.
