LA CONFIDENTIAL (1997) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

L.A. Confidential is a 1997 American neo-noir crime thriller film directed, produced, and co-written by Curtis Hanson. The screenplay by Hanson and Brian Helgeland is based on James Ellroy's 1990 novel, the third book in his L.A. Quartet series. The film tells the story of a group of LAPD officers in 1953, and the intersection of police corruption and Hollywood celebrity. The title refers to the 1950s scandal magazine Confidential, portrayed in the film as Hush-Hush. Hello everyone and welcome to The Coby Show! If you judge a good holiday season by an unhealthy amount of chocolate consumption, then my holiday season is going great Coby 🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫

Max du Coudray

This feels like an especially good Coby movie, who has a solid appreciation for the older cinema that informs its style.

I don't think I can make it tonight, but I'll try to watch sometime over the weekend! Enjoy the show everyone!

Oh I do hope I can make it for this one Coby , this is one of the best modern takes on the Noir crime thriller genre ( try saying that three times fast. Lol😄🤙

Sam Oh

Minor spoiler: Russell Crowe wasn't really acting in this film...

Hey Coby, hope you’re having a great evening. This is one of my favorites. I think it’s of the greatest noir films ever made. That cast is absolutely phenomenal. Bassinger, Crowe, Pierce, Spacey, DeVito, and Cromwell!! I love how Russell has this damaged, nobility in the character, a moral code, but a time bomb beneath the surface.. I love the tension between Crowe, and Pierce, they’ve been through a lot, and you’re kind of rooting for both of them, so when they finally join up, it’s a sigh of relief. If I’m not mistaken, I think these are the American break out roles for both actors. You mentioned L.A. still looking like that. I just love that old Hollywood aesthetic.

This is one of my favorite Russell Crowe movies. I also highly recommend watching Cinderella Man, which is based on a true story.

One of my favourite thrillers. It's SO good. Question: full watch alongs on Patreon require my own copy, is that correct?

Great reaction! You should check out Palmetto (1998) with Woody Harrelson, Elisabeth Shue, and Gina Gershon. It’s also very noir with a bit more humor.
