DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID (1982) - Full Watch Along

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is a 1982 American neo-noir comedy-mystery film, directed by Carl Reiner and starring Steve Martin, Rachel Ward and Reiner. Co-written by Reiner, Martin & George Gipe, the film is both a parody of and an homage to film noir and the pulp detective films of the 1940s. The title refers to Martin's character telling a story of a woman obsessed with plaid, a scene which was ultimately cut from the film. Edited by Bud Molin, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is partly a collage film, incorporating clips from 19 vintage films. They are combined with new footage of Martin and other actors similarly shot in black-and-white, with the result that the original dialogue and acting of the classic films become part of a completely different story. Among the actors who appear from classic films are Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Brian Donlevy, Kirk Douglas, Ava Gardner, Cary Grant, Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, Burt Lancaster, Charles Laughton, Fred MacMurray, Ray Milland, Edmond O'Brien, Vincent Price, Barbara Stanwyck, and Lana Turner.

Don't worry at all that you didn't recognize every movie/actor! I have seen this many, many times and still don't know all of them!

Oh, I’m so excited that you’re going to watch this! I haven’t seen it in ages but I absolutely love it! Very innovative! Rachel Ward was just gorgeous that’s for sure. I don’t know if this was before or after the Thornbirds but that is one series that you need to watch, well it’s a miniseries. Even if you don’t watch it on here, I highly recommend it.

Awesome Coby!!! I loved this movie when I was a kid, I haven’t seen it in forever! I’ll definitely have to watch this!!!

This movie has so many famous Film Noir movies spliced into this move, It is great. I figured you had not watch enough older movie to know the stars from the past, but it is still fun so I knew you would enjoy it still

Request Tier? How much does that Tier hurt? Is there a line to get on that Tier?

Have you seen The Man with Two Brains? By Oh God! Director Carl Reiner. If Duke of Earl ever comes on the radio on the road, I have to pull over to avoid an accident because I’m laughing so hard.

Dorsalfinsky

He and Carl Reiner had a Scorsese / De Niro relationship that gets overlooked I think.

Has this been addressed before? If Coby is Australian, I wouldn’t expect her to know American actors. In 1985 the only Australian actors I knew were the ones in The Road Warrior.

EPIC!!! The Man with Two Brains and especially The Jerk are two more early Steve Martin flicks you should watch

This was great. I was really surprised by how quickly you picked up on what was going on, and you recognized more stars than I thought you would. I recognized all the movie stars, but I didn't recognize every single movie. There are a couple I hadn't seen. I'd seen all of Humphrey Bogart's films that were shown, and I do recommend watching The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, and Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice. Fred McMurray is in Double Indemnity with Barbara Stanwyck. I love the old classic black-and-white movies.

I had never heard of this movie and did not have high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was cleverly done and a lot of the humor was subtle. I should've known better going in with Carl Reiner directing. Is it safe to assume that Coby knows Carl was Rob Reiner's father by now?

Steve Martin feuded with my hometown in the 70s and 80s. He said in a Playboy interview that it was "Nowhere, USA." The mayor invited him to town and he apologized, but it got mentioned in his movies. Here, it's the only place to get destroyed. In The Jerk, it's mentioned as his hometown. He also digs at it in Planes, Trains, and Automoblies.

I can't "like" this more than once, but you're welcome for the request and I will look forward to watching your reaction at least one more time now!

Can anyone explain to me why all the full watches have no video to speak of their all blurred Yet theres video on Y T and the discussion ones seems backwards to me
