DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (1964) - Full Watch Along

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (known simply and more commonly as Dr. Strangelove) is a 1964 political satire black comedy film co-written, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick. It is loosely based on the thriller novel Red Alert (1958) by Peter George, who wrote the screenplay with Kubrick and Terry Southern. The film, financed and released by Columbia Pictures, was a co-production between the United States and the United Kingdom. Dr. Strangelove parodies Cold War fears of a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union and stars Peter Sellers (portraying three different characters), George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens, and Tracy Reed. The story concerns an insane brigadier general of the United States Air Force who orders a pre-emptive nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. It follows the President of the United States (Sellers), his scientific advisor Dr. Strangelove (Sellers), a Royal Air Force exchange officer (Sellers), and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Scott) as they attempt to stop the crew of a B-52 from bombing the Soviet Union and starting a nuclear war.

This better be a good reaction… or you’ll have to answer to the Coca-Cola Company 😁

Hey Coby. I’m looking forward to this one. I have always heard of this movie, but I’ve never gotten around to seeing it. It’s in every bucket list movies conversation..

Full thoughts in your inbox, but THANK you for this! Well worth it! Great reaction and great movie! I think every movie I've asked you to do has been a winner (in my book anyway) and this was no different! I see you're already going the YouTube edit tomorrow too! I hope to be in the chat for it!

Scott

I LITERALLY watched this last night on my own because I love the movie so freaking much. Let me go grab the disc again...

Reggie

Yay! This is one of my favorite films and arguably the greatest black comedy ever made!

Stephen Wadsworth

Great! Glad you enjoyed it. (Apologies if you know this already, but in case you don't...) Peter Sellers was part of a British comedy group in the 1950s called The Goons, and they were the single biggest influence on Monty Python (as all the Python guys have said many times). Peter Sellers was the main performer in The Goons, playing lots of different characters, and the main writer of The Goons was Spike Milligan, who was/is the old guy in Monty Python's Life of Brian who, about half-way through the movie, is left talking to himself after the crowd leaves to follow Brian!

Peter Sellers played three characters in this movie. The pilot was Slim Pickens (Taggert from Blazing Saddles), and there was a very young James Earl Jones also in the plane. Also, George C Scott the general in the War Room constantly chewing gum also went on to star in the true story movie of General George Patton, who won WWII practically by himself. The airplane music was "When Johnny Comes Marching Home".

Matt

This is probably my favorite comedy of all time, looking forward to seeing your reaction

Matt

Have you seen any Peter Sellers Pink Panther films, I'd love reactions for some of those especially the first 2 films

John A

Peter Sellers is great. If you have not seen him as his most iconic character Inspector Jacques Clouseau in The Pink Panther movies. Starting with The Pink Panther (1963) If you seen that one, then I hope you will watch the 2nd one A Shot in the Dark (1964)

John A

Now can not stop singing, When Johnny comes marching home again, Hurrah! Hurrah! We'll give him a hearty welcome then, Hurrah! Hurrah! The men will cheer, the boys will shout, The ladies, they will dance about, And we'll all be there, When Johnny comes marching home!

John A

Peter Seller as 1) Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, a British RAF exchange officer 2) Merkin Muffley, the President of the United States 3) Dr. Strangelove (né Merkwürdigliebe), the wheelchair-using nuclear war expert and former Nazi.

Kudos to whoever chose this film for you, such an amazing work of Sellers. Great job in pinpointing his 3 roles. However, I’m very disappointed that you didn’t say that James Earl Jones’ role was played by Laurence Fishburne.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

Love all the goofy names. Ambassador DeSadeski, premier Kissoff, Burpelson Air Force base, the Bland corporation, major King Kong (Sellers was originally slated to do this role as well. But he couldn't do the western accent so Kubrick got Slim Pickens).

Pete H

Interesting trivia: the film was released in early 1964, only a few months after the Kennedy assassination. In the scene where major Kong goes thru the survival kit contents (prophylactic, lipstick, nylons), at the end he says "a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff." Originally it was Dallas. They changed it for obvious reasons.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Excited to see your reaction to it.

Dorsalfinsky

I’m just gonna keep my freaking mouth shut.

Dorsalfinsky

Sterling Hayden was incredible alongside Elliot Gould in The Long Goodbye.

Dorsalfinsky

If you hadn’t gone in blind, you could have reacted in that groovy retro bikini Buck’s secretary Ms. Scott wore in the movie.

Dorsalfinsky

And Keenan Wynn is excellent in Nashville from 1975. An incredibly topical movie. More so in 1975 and now then maybe Dr. Strangelove was then or now.

Paul Hildebrand

Great movie. Every time I think of it, I envision the pilot riding the bomb down. I spent the first hour waiting for ‘That’s James Earl Jones! James Earl Jones! It’s James Earl Jones!’—just when I was ready to give up, he finally spoke and it sort of happened. A little more doubt than I expected so didn't quite get that quote.
