TOUCHING THE VOID (2003) - Full Watch Along

Touching the Void is a 2003 survival documentary film directed by Kevin Macdonald and starring Brendan Mackey, Nicholas Aaron, and Ollie Ryall. The plot concerns Joe Simpson and Simon Yates' near-fatal descent after making the first successful ascent of the West Face of Siula Grande in the Cordillera Huayhuash in the Peruvian Andes, in 1985. It is based on Simpson's 1988 book of the same name.

Depends on the mountain!

When people hear "documentary," they tend to think "boring." This, of course, was anything but boring! The first time I watched it, I don't think I really understood until the end that it wasn't just a "based on a true story" film, and that the 3 guys talking to the camera weren't just actors. I would love to see a behind the scenes show about HOW they made this movie! The shots were absolutely incredible!

First, fantastic reaction! I’m so glad you enjoyed the documentary. I’ve watched it a dozen times and the end always makes me cry too. The song they used a as a theme is Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Part. Other documentaries you might find interesting are HANDS ON A HARDBODY (about a contest to win a free truck, you just have to stay awake for three days with no sleep), WINNEBAGO MAN (about a man who did sales videos for the motor home maker and his profanity-laced tirades made him one of the earliest Internet memes), and JOE FRANK: SOMEWHERE OUT THERE (he made the most amazing radio shows ever). None are as emotionally powerful as TOUCHING THE VOID but they are all excellent documentaries. If you’re in the mood for a fictional mountain climbing movie I recommend K2 (1991). Stars Michael Biehn (of TERMINATOR, THE ABYSS, and ALIENS fame). Features some amazing climbing sequences and a really good soundtrack. But if you want something lighter and funny I would recommend both LIVING IN OBLIVION and NEXT STOP WONDERLAND. I think you will love both of them. NSW would be great for Valentine’s Day; the movie is about finding love and fate. If you want another great movie that will make you cry try JACOBS LADDER (1990) with Tim Robbins. Kind of a psychological horror film until the end when you discover the movie is something much more.

I got to "not being a mountain climber" from reading a book called "Into Thin Air" which covers a day with a lot of deaths on Everest, but this reinforces it for me. I do like true survival stories quite a bit and enjoyed this movie. Not sure if you have seen the movie "Alive", and it is another true survival story and was quite good.
