MURDER BY DEATH (1976) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

Murder by Death is a 1976 American comedy mystery film directed by Robert Moore and written by Neil Simon. The film stars Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, James Coco, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Nancy Walker, and Estelle Winwood. The plot is a broad parody or spoof of the traditional country-house whodunit, familiar to mystery fiction fans of classics such as Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. The cast is an ensemble of British and American actors playing send-ups of well-known fictional sleuths, including Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, and Sam Spade. It also features a rare acting performance by author Truman Capote. Hello everyone and welcome to The Coby Show! Thank you for supporting me and I hope you have a good time here! I love that you are reacting to some of my favorite movies, Murder by death, Dead Men don’t wear plaid, Great Race, Dr. Strangelove. Please do the Pink Panther series

This reaction is so much fun! First thing: most definitely Clue is a rip off of Murder By Death (making it an early product tie-in movie). I never saw Clue for that very reason, even though I hear it's good. Secondly: Charlie Chan was famously/infamously played by a white actor (his son played by an asian actor), so they're parodying that when they cast Peter Sellers in the part. It's not just Peter Sellers playing Asian! It's parodying specifically those Charlie Chan movies. Lastly: Alec Guinness was actually reading the script for Star Wars when he made Murder By Death.

This was fun Coby. Your reaction to recognizing Obi-Wan was so genuine. Peter Falk is great, in fact I think I had this confused with another 70s mystery spoof. that he was in. Seller’s was spoofing Charlie Chan, and Adopted Son is a take on Charlie always referring to his son as “number one son.” The dialogue is so clever. I really liked it.

Ah, sorry, I'm still watching the reaction: Peter Falk had a glass eye! He was in a car accident early in his career. So you weren't wrong! (And although he did play Columbo, he's doing a parody of Bogart in The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, etc etc.

Miss Marbles was played by Elsa Lanchester, the original Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Lionel was a popular model toy train back in the day ... so his address is funny because it's 22 Twain ... choo choo train! Also, here's a cut scene with Sherlock Holmes, not very interesting, but kinda cool. https://youtu.be/7vAwH2VEyeg?si=5Ke6Jg_UbqdKs2om I'm so happy that you reacted to this movie, it's been one of my favorites forever!
