THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012) - Full Watch Along

The Dark Knight Rises is a 2012 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. Directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan, and the story with David S. Goyer, it is the final installment in Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, and the sequel to The Dark Knight (2008). The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman, alongside Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Michael Caine. Set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, it follows a retired Wayne being forced to resume his role as Batman to save Gotham City from nuclear destruction at the hands of the terrorist Bane (Hardy).

I thought Dark Knight Rises was ok, not as good as the Dark Knight. Dark Knight Rises is based“Knightfall”storyline, “ No Man’s Land” storyline( this storyline is when Gotham is officially cut off from the US and chaos reigns), and “the Dark Knight Returns” miniseries. These are widely considered some of best storylines of Batman. They recreated the famous “Breaking of the Bat” from Batman #497 in which Bane breaks Batman’s back. In case you are wondering Bruce has faked his death many times in the history of the comics, usually it is because he wants to disappear and the Bat Family picks up and protects the city. I would love to see what Nolan could have done with some of the other members of Batman’s rogues gallery like Poison Ivy, Penguin, or even the Condiment King( this is an actual Batman villain, that uses condiments as weapons.) Selina Kyle also known as Catwoman is probably my favorite character. In this film, she is only call “The Cat” which is the name she used in her debut comic which was in debut issue of the Batman comic series( Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939) in 1940 which also introduced the Joker and has remained a nickname that is sometimes used in the comics when referring to her, and her and Batman are typically called together “The Bat and The Cat”, and have a playful banter with Catwoman giving the wisecracks and Batman handing the brooding. Her look in this movie was heavily influenced by Julie Newmar’s Catwoman in the 1960’s tv series( who is my favorite version of the character). She has undergone many changes to her costume, however her costume has become more consistent in recent years. She wears a skin tight latex suit with claws that functions as climbing claws and a glass cutter. One of the biggest thing that is missing from this portrayal of the character is that this one lacks her trademark whip. She uses it in both combat and to swing from building to building. She sometimes has a trained cat help her in her jobs because a cat is small enough to bypass most defenses. Her relationship with Batman is complicated because she is a thief. That being said, if he doesn’t catch her immediately, he will sometimes basically let her go until next time. She is often portrayed in more recent comics as more of an antihero. She is a thief with a code. She only steals from people that can afford it, and she tries not to kill, but will if she is forced to. She is even sometimes a part of the Bat Family. Her backstory is kinda sad, her father was abusive towards her and her mother which caused her to commit suicide. Afterwards her father drank himself to death. Selina grew up on the streets of Gotham. She was a former dominatrix prostitute who left that life to be a cat burglar. The movie character of Jen, who is Selina’s housemate and accomplice, is based on the character of Holly Robinson in the comics who has a similar relationship with Selina. In the Batman Rebirth storyline, Selina even taking the blame for Holly’s crimes of 237 counts of murder during a bombing of her childhood orphanage( it was actually done by a terrorist group which Holly was a part of). She often has what could be best described as a mystical connection to felines, they seem to flock to her and obey her to an extent. This is somewhat useful especially with big cats. In many versions, Selina is an animal rights and conservation activist and she uses some of her loot to fund conservation efforts. She sometimes gets a happy ending by marrying Bruce and they live happily ever after. In the Batman Rebirth storyline, Bruce actually proposes to Selina and many of the following comics are about their engagement, including a double date with Clark Kent and Lois Lane( she knows that Clark is Superman)to a fair which is having a superhero night. Lois suggests that they switch costumes. Bruce wearing Superman’s tights and Clark wearing the Batsuit with this glasses in front of the cowl. Lois has to wear Selina’s catsuit and Selina wears her regular clothes. The guard doesn’t want to let her in, but she just meows in his ear which works like a Jedi mind trick and he lets her in. However Selina calls off the wedding and after realizing that marrying him would take away the darkness that make him Batman. Her knowledge of Batman secret identity is also inconsistent, however Batman is usually well aware of Catwoman’s true name. John Blake is an original character and he is a character that I kinda wish got his own movie. In the comics there have been 5 Robins: Dick Grayson who is the most common one in media, he was a former circus acrobat who parents were murder mid performance, he has left the Robin mantle to become Nightwing and he works out of the nearby city of Blüdhaven. Dick has become Batman on several occasions because Bruce was unavailable typically due to injury. Jason Todd, the second Robin who was a former street kid who was caught stealing the tires from the Batmobile and became Robin. He was killed by the Joker, but was brought back to life by Lazarus Pit at the command of Ra’s al Ghul. He has become the Red Hood, an antihero who is not afraid to kill and uses guns to make a point. After Jason’s “death” Bruce swore to never have another Robin. However Tim Drake deduced both Batman and Nightwing’s true identities. He is from a wealthy absent family and he is notable for his sharp intellect and detective skills having been called “The Worlds Second Greatest Detective”, believed that “Batman needs a Robin” The costume underwent a significant redesign when he took over. He is now mostly goes by Red Robin. Stephanie Brown is the fourth Robin and the only female to take on the role. She was only Robin for a short time and was in relationship with Tim. She is now one of three people to currently be Batgirl( the others are Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain). The current one is Damien Wayne, the son of Bruce and Talia and the grandson of Ra’s al Ghul. He raised in the League of Assassins and held many of their beliefs which made him rather violent and dangerous to his enemies. Bruce was unaware of his existence until Damien was around 9 years old and Talia sent Damien to live with his father. He has a tendency to be a little bit of a brat and extremely arrogant. Bruce has been work on deprogramming Damien. Bane in this movie is nothing like the one depicted in the comics. He is usually Hispanic and wears a luchador mask from the fictional island of Santa Prisca. He is addicted to a super steroid called Venom which gives him super strength which makes him a match for Batman. However this also his main weakness and Batman targets it. He has both strength and intelligence and has figured out Batman’s true identity. I really dislike Talia al Ghul as a character, and that might have lead me to not care for this portrayal. She is usually depicted as Batman’s ex girlfriend who Batman still has feelings for. She is pretty much always a villain and follows in her father’s footsteps. Both she and her father want Bruce to succeed him. Her father usually has a role in hooking them up. The conception of Damien is a matter for debate since Bruce may have not been a willing participant in the act. John Daggett, who was played by Ben Mendelsohn, who famously played Orson Kennic in Rogue One, is an original character, but is an adaptation of Roland Daggett. Roland Daggett is the owner of Daggett Industries which specializes in chemicals. He is a corrupt businessman who will do anything for an advantage over his competitors, no matter how many people get hurt in the process. His story is not very interesting but he was portrayed by a great actor.

Hey Coby any plans seeing the 1989 Batman with Jack Nickerson and Michael Keaton

Terry In the UK

There have been a lot of movie trilogy's, and usually there's one entry to let the trilogy down. Not with the Nolan Batman films....I could wake up on three consecutive mornings and each morning pick a different one as my favourite....and this is genius level cinema. Heath Ledger's Joker will always be remembered ( rightly so ) as one of movies greatest on-screen villains,...but Bane is not far behind.. So glad we finally made it to this one Coby....if it wasn't already almost 3am and if this wasn't a 2 hour 44 minutes movie and if my alarm wasn't set for 6:30am, I would not be able to stop myself from pressing play now.... but I guess I'm gonna have to wait until tomorrow evening...... Which reminds me....why on earth am I not asleep..... I've got to be up again in just over 3 hours.

I think you just made a lot of people really happy Cobes! Well done!

It took a long time to get here, but it now complete at least the Nolan trilogy> I did enjoy this one, but like most Batman comic fans we had a lot of problems with it. First was Baine, he was not the comic book Baine. Yes we knew that Maranda was Talia Al Ghul, Ra's Al Ghul daughter. In the comics Talia and Bruce have a rocky love relationship and they had a son, Damian, who become the 5th Robin. Also saw it coming that they were going to call John Blake Robin. I think it would have been batter not naming him Robin and just hinted at John Blake being the next Batman. Of course that also would not have come from the comics. I do think it is the weakest of the three films and not happy they played down the Scarecrow in these movies. would have loved him being a main villain. Oh and Batman does not kill.

Coby, you look great as Catwoman. I prefer that style over the one in TDKR. IMO, that meet up at the end was real and done for Alfred's beefit, because he had told ruce of his dream. So he knew where Alfred would be there, so he could reassure him he was still alive.

Nick Christensen

Hey, my long wait for this is over: I bought the first 2 from the old channel before you made this one. It was a blast watching with you! Clever of you to figure out Miranda was the villain, but at least you had some surprises. Glad you loved it!

Dan Cartier

Did you have a non-speaking role in Pulp Fiction ??

thomas king

Great watch along. The only thing I didn't agree with was having catwoman kill Bane. They built this incredible battle up between Batman and Bane all movie and didn't have them finish it. Catwoman killing him so suddenly when the final battle was about to start.

Dave Beth

I liked that you thought Bane sounded like Patrick Stewart in the beginning... Tom Hardy played a younger version of Patrick Stewart's character in another movie (that you will likely never see!).

Eddie Perkins

We all need a Coby Catwoman film. I had never seen this one before. I also thought he was dead, but I refused to accept it. The scene at the end, with Alfred at a café, just as he envisioned, glancing up to spot Bruce across the terrace—alive and well, sharing a meal with Selina, who wears the pearl necklace. Alfred and Bruce exchange a silent, knowing nod of relief, satisfied that Bruce is finally happy and free. This was the ending I had hoped for.

To build up a reaction to what felt like years and then to have it feel it like it was worth the wait is really incredible so congrats to that and thanks for a great reaction.
