How Virna Jandiroba used a risky guard pull against the fence to find armbar success.

By Sam (@StuffFromSam)

At UFC Fight Night: Jung vs. Ige, Virna Jandiroba used a clever guard pull against the cage to set up an armbar against Kanako Murata.

Already crowded against the fence, Jandiroba used it to make a hard pivot into an armbar.

Jandiroba made such a hard angle, it stretched Murata away from her base and had her falling forward. Unfortunately for Murata, she was also too close to the fence to square up and defend.

In trying to posture out without her base, Murata ended up extending her arm. The arm was dislocated in the lock, but Murata wouldn't tap. Thankfully the referee and the ringside doctor later saved Murata from herself.

This isn't to say a guard pull against the fence always makes sense. Jandiroba found success due to two key advantages: size and better submission grappling. Against someone bigger who can stand over a crowded Jandiroba and still reach her with punches would make this tactic far riskier.
