When you're a child of US immigrants, speaking English isn't power; power is being able to speak English AND your native tongue. Otherwise, you'll have to believe whatever the US tells you about your own history.

Without this power, you won't know if your city or a corporate polluter is telling you one thing in English and something else to your elders in their language (a major problem in environmental justice). You won't know if they've divorced you from the reality your family lives in. You won't know where you come from. You'll be speaking past each other, and you won't know what you don't know. This is WHY there is such pressure to Americanize as soon as you come here, to prevent multiculturalism, so you won't know they're gaslighting you and playing you against your own.

Resist because for some BIPOC, their history, their real names, have forever been erased.
