Use the wall to brace, and point your back foot toward the wall. Slightly lean back, engage your abs and glutes, raise your leg to a comfortable height, then slice. Work on speed. Speed means moving quickly back and forth. This will prevent you from locking out and hurting your knee. Raising your leg higher will also help prevent knee lockout.

The point of this exercise is to develop flexibility with strength.

Continuing with the sword analogy, you are slicing, not thrusting.

After a while, you can also do this away from the wall. It'll require more balance and strength. Don't lean too far back, however, as it'll compromise your balance. You still want to maintain your stance and balance when kicking.

Note that your foot should be pointed, meaning your foot is pulling away from your shin. Not flexed, which is where your foot is pulling into your shin. This is because you want to hit with the top of the foot and shin for slicing kicks. For stomps, you want to hit with the bottom of your foot, which is why your foot is flexed.
