There may be times you need to pivot off your rear foot. Most often, it's to kick or block a kick. Your rear foot is now standing above the button. You lead in either direction with your front leg, and your rear leg adjusts to maintain your stance.
To get used to this movement pattern, pretend to block low kicks while pivoting in place. We're using blocking only as a tool to teach the rear pivot. Don't worry about technique.
Lift your leg to block the kick, place it down and reorient your stance. Do this in both directions on both sides. If you have a partner, have them circle around you while throwing low kicks in your direction without making contact.
Do it again without the blocks.
By pivoting off your rear foot, you're shifting your weight further back, leaving your front leg light and easy to pick up for blocks and kicks.
