There was a fantasy book I read a long time ago back when I was around 13 or 14 where one section stuck with me all these years later. There was a chapter where a young couple got married and had to live with the man’s parents and his siblings because they were all poor commoners. I remember the wedding night consummation took place in a shared sleeping area where all there was between the couple and the rest of the man’s family was a tatty piece of cloth hanging from the ceiling to divide the room. The cringe I felt at the age of 13/14 at the thought of being in that situation stuck with me.

With the benefit of hindsight I think being able to get it on with complete privacy is a modern luxury that a lot of our ancestors didn’t have.
