Lucy almost never summons and maintains more than two gates at once. The few times she does go beyond that are extreme situations, and even then, they completely drain her. When she summoned multiple spirits for the Spirit King, she wasn’t actively fighting. She was basically brute-forcing it to prove because she wanted to save Loki. And when she summoned them all to help close the gate, she was effectively doing a Unison Raid with another spirit user, not fighting a full battle at the same time. The two of them effectively performed a miracle to save the world from a huge dragon invasion. Here, she’s exhausted, already maintaining two gates in combat, and then forces open a third. That’s a much bigger strain, and it’s not something she normally does, especially not mid-fight at this point in the story. It might look like a power downgrade at first, but these episodes are honestly overdue Lucy power upgrades. Some of her best feats, and honestly some of the best feats in the series up to this point, happen right here.

The Lucy episode really got me, although Aquarius did not die it was a huge hit emotionally. a huge hit for Lucy too, losing her first friend and one of her more powerful spirits. There is still a semi- long way to go in this arc but it is all gonna be fights I believe you will really enjoy, some more than others as well. Some great character development is coming too, we have already seen Wendy's and Lucy's. Some one else said it but Lucy has never opened more than two gates in battle which is why it was such an incredible feat, no other celestial spirit that we know of was capable of that which really does show how strong Lucy has become. I do believe this has cemented her in one of fairy tail's stronger members. I personally cannot wait for you to watch gajeel's fight, I think the book reader part of you will really enjoy it

tartaros arc ends at episode 265. i would suggest watching until the very last second of that episode when you get there !

That scene at the end with Jackal freaking out and asking Lucy “what ARE you?!?” While Lucy is just crying her eyes out is just heartbreaking: usually in shounens when the hero pulls off an insane display of power and the bad guy is terrified of them the hero would stand in front of them menacing, aura farming (even this show does it multiple times with Natsu), but here Lucy is just ignoring him, on her knees, crying, because she just lost her first ever friend.

Generally speaking the fandom largely underestimates Lucy because she’s not doing the actual fighting herself, but even just fighting with 2 zodiacs at the same time is an incredible feat only very few wizards can accomplish, and what she did here, fighting with 3 at the same time is basically unheard of, making Lucy the strongest celestial wizard in the WORLD, and for all we know in HISTORY.

Lucy has the ability to open multiple gates switching out after closing a gate which makes it seem like she's has them all open but most can only maintain two gates at the same time till now when she had opened three gates showing how much more powerful she's gotten. This is my second favorite arc with my number 1 favorite coming after this one.

This episode was one of a handful that really got me in the feels when I first watched it. For a while I was still tearing up when I revisited it. Having watched it a few times now it has less emotional impact which is why I like reactions because seeing it through someone else’s eyes can make things feel fresh again.

By this point in time I realised almost no one ever actually died in this series but that didn’t lessen the emotional impact for me because the characters don’t know that. I am responding emotionally to the characters emotions rather than the actual stakes.
