Regarding the texting, cheating that John is involved in this episode, in the books, John has a reputation as a womanizer, and there are hints of it before his marriage within the BBC show too. Remember that time he couldn't remember the name of the woman he was dating? Sadly, it wasn't out of character for him. You haven't made it to the part that fans hate yet. lol.
