Yeah, fans kicked up a fuss about the sonic sunglasses which tbh weren't any sillier than the sonic screwdriver that didn't even look like a screwdriver. Trust Doctor Who fans to be really serious about the silly stuff. The reason for them is much less cynical than you think, the thinking was that a cheap pair of glasses could be bought instead of an expensive toy, taking the pressure of cash strapped parents. Of course this didn't go down well with fans cause in a show that promotes change in it's narrative, any deviation from the same old is shot down in flames.

The shit talk on the sunglasses will always be something that makes me more upset then it should, “Oh The BBC was being cheap.” No, it was Peter’s idea. He’s been a Doctor Who fan since he was a child and he wanted kids with little to no income to be able to play their favorite hero without having to buy a toy, model or prop replica. It’s the same reason he chose to have his costume be more muted with different tshirts, basic pants, nondescript boots and a hoodie overcoat. It’s a whole lot more likely for the average fan to have in their closet allowing them to get to cosplay as his Doctor without having to break the bank.
