I also like the message in this book! I think one thing that could be improved is showing more of who Alan is as a person through his relationships. Most of them happen off-panel and I think learning what they saw/admired about Alan would help us better understand him as a character and appreciate him the same way they do.

As for book club recs, how about Black Sciencd by Rick Remender? I know its a long run so maybe just the first volume?

I think I like the retcon the most as a way for New 52 Earth-2's legacy to live on. That was what I liked the most in the New 52, but it kinda just teethered out and now feels forgotten about. Unfortunately, I can't speak from any level of authority on golden age Alan Scott or the LGBTQ+ community, but from just hearing it I think I'd have really loved a story told from the framing device of Alan coming out to Obsidian and explaining to him how he can be 100% homosexual (not bi), but still love both him and his mother.

Next one for the book club: Eight Billion Genies by Charles Soule & Ryan Browne

I’m going to suggest Erma the Webcomic again before I forget to do so again.

My pick for the next poll is The Crow by J. O'Barr.

My thoughts on Maus: I don't know what to say about this comic that hasn't already been said before. I'll just say think that in the times we live in the phrase "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" has never been more true. Maus is a vital and important work in that case. Art's art conveys emotion in such simplicity its astounding. The choice to make the jews mice, the nazis cats, the poles pigs etc. is pure genius from the symbolism of it, to the scenes where the jews are trying to blend in so they're depicted as wearing masks of the poles, genius. Maus bleeds history and it will rip your heart out by it's end. It's one of the few comics that have made me cry. I love this comic book. Side Note: Art Spiegelman collaborated with Joe Sacco on a cartoon in The Guardian He called the events in Palestine “kinda ‘genocidish" and an “ethnic cleansing.” He stated he published the piece because he feared Maus could potentially be used as a recruitment tool for the Israeli military.
