Damn, how twisted this is. "I know how it is to lose the one you love, so to spare you the pain I am taking your life." That's a hipocrisy, since he is dealing with his own loss by capturing gods and using them to his own ends. He is not giving this doe a chance, since he thinks he is doing what is best. I wonder, what would Usma think if she was present?

Antares' expression leaves me with a lot of questions. Does he feel regret for killing Pou? Did he lose a child to stillbirth? So many questions!

Screw this guy!!! He knows their pain but he still used Loss to murder a grieving father, while using Eve to specifically save HIS OWN child! If it's such a mercy, why not give himself to Loss??? Yeah, didn't think so. ARGH, he's such a good villain! I hope Pou's mate is able to get away and maybe help the main cast, unless the glow of the ring implies that he's killing her too offscreen...

Yup. Antaras likely lost his wife and child and that’s what drove him to drag down Eve at least. (I think this because of how he’s telling the mother who just lost her mate and child that he knows her pain well. The pain of losing a mate and child.) So as he understands that pain, he views putting her down as a mercy when compared to that pain. And perhaps in a weird way he’s right? Some people CANT recover after such a heavy double blow like that. Especially given the context and the why.

To me, this implies that Antaras is suffering so deeply in his current predicament but also so stubborn in his desire for his plan to work that he truly believes he is showing this poor family mercy. He’d rather they cease to feel anything at all than feel the same pain as him. From the outside looking in, we can see his hypocrisy but he truly believes to his core that he’s doing the right thing and he won’t let the opinions of others sway him. It’s both bone chilling and heartbreaking at the same time. This is such good character writing!

I wouldn’t be surprised if this action from him is what drives Usma away, in fear and disgust for what her father has become. Regardless, I do love how rounded all the characters are. Everyone has their own motives, wants, fears, etc. Villains are often the heroes of their own stories. Pain, loss, and fear can make people (deer) do things that seem crazy to everyone else but makes perfect sense in their heads. Then they may double down on their stance if their decisions are questioned, out of further fear of being wrong. 😔 A very good depiction of differing views and moral complexity!

Coming back for a re-read and wanted to reply~ I think it’s awesome to have Loss only appear to the one who dies. Like how in Kasko’s flashback, he could sense that Loss was near and you could juuuuuuuust barely see it’s outline in the negative space of the background (page 159). Chef’s kiss 🤌

I really think that was unnecessary and uncalled for...yeah tell him to back off but he is a big guy...he could have easily tured him out abd sent him on his way.. that poor doe lost enough as is abd now you left her alone with her grief...and she wont die of old age so sge would just suffer...
