I've been wanting to draw little portraits of characters we haven't seen in a while, so here's Volhos — the first 'bad' guy of the comic, or at least how he was received by the readers.

Honestly I don't think he's a bad guy. He's an animal, the deer operate vastly differently than we do, and GS deer even more differently. They're the kind that run from danger and that's how it has always been, how it just works for them. He absolutely did not want to say aloud that he'd leave his child behind, but what kind of leader would he be if he asked others to do something so awful he'd refuse to do himself? Virva is the most important thing to him. Very likely, if such thing would happen again and she'd be the one to fall, he'd break his own rules, no matter what he had said before.

Some people try to follow their heads, but heart often wins.

Very good point! I didn’t think of it from that perspective.

I figured as much honestly. If he's a good leader, he is certain to, at least publicly, keep is rules consistent. And unfortunately, no he is absolutely correct in one perspective.

I never consider Volhos a bad guy or a bad sire. He's strict and serious but, seeing other sires like Rokkus, it's obvious he cares for his family and herd, not only for the herd
