Use baking soda for the towel smell. Put a ton of baking soda in the wash, and no detergent. Let soak for an hour before doing the wash if the smell is very persistent.

for the towels, if mine get smelly i’ll wash with a cup or so of vinegar and then if they’re still smelly a cup or so of baking soda. to prevent them getting smelly in the first place, let them hang or lay flat to dry after you use them. don’t crumple them up or throw them straight in the washing machine to sit for days. i have a basket on top of my washing machine and i drape the towels over the sides to dry then i put them in the main part of the basket once they’re totally dry and waiting for a wash.

Baking soda soak, white vinegar soak. If the towels are white I honestly just do a water + small quantity of bleach and soak. Also - washing machine cleaner tabs. I throw two tabs in every month, run a hot water regular cycle, keeps it clean and smelling good. Anyway!!! So much excitement for the upcoming episode

For the towels my family always uses the Lysol laundry sanitizer sport version. We use it for my dogs bedding, towels, and such and it gets rid of the dog smell completely so I assume it should work for the mildew smell as well

Girl same with the towels! I feel like it's an east of the Mississippi problem where humidity is insane (I live in DC). I never had that musty/mildew smell when I lived in Cali or Seattle. I use the Lysol laundry additive in the wash cycle and then vinegar in an extra rinse cycle.

I use fragrance-free laundry detergent since I avoid needless chemicals, as they worsen my asthma (and can cause asthma in children). My laundry always smells just odorlessly clean, which I personally enjoy. However, if something does smell mildewey, I use kitchen vinegar or laundry vinegar as an extra. And the laundry is wonderfully odorless again. I highly recommend!

Idk if this happens to you too, Jessi, but my kids are 4 and 2 (20 months apart) and I literally just have to buy 2 of everything because they automatically want what the other one gets lol it’s exhausting!

Vinegar in your wash will help with the smell. Also a detergent or powder with enzymes (I’m Aussie, not sure what brands you have over there). But also, make sure you’re cleaning your washing machine. If you have a “drum clean” setting use it at least every three months or so with baking soda in the powder drawer and vinegar in the softener bit. Or if you don’t have the clean setting put it on a low temperature high agitation wash. And if you have a front loader never, ever leave the door shut when it is empty. That’s a guaranteed way to grow mould. Oh, and finally 🤣 if you have a hot wash sanitation cycle (90+ C or 200+ F usually used for cloth nappies/diapers) chuck the towels in on that setting once every 6 months. Make sure you separate colours cos they’ll bleed in the hot water.

If you have a humidity issue with your towels. A sock filled with rice or a lavender bag will do the trick.

Sounds like you definitely need a drum clean/filter flush like most of the other comments have suggested! I’d also just forgo the vinegar and give them ye old sanitise wash at 90 degress celsius (I’m not converting that for you) or a cold wash w/bleach pending if youre OK with your towels losing colour

Have you tried bleach in your washer? We had a front loader when I was growing up and my mom had to do bleach cycles to keep it from making clothes musty even when they're immediately taken out! Idk if yours is a front loader but it might help still.

Wooohoooo 🥳🥳 Btw, our towels used to do that too, I think it was our washer that was very dirty, even though we used those tablets to wash the washer the drum on the outside is still filthy. Also make sure that you don’t take out the towels when they’re super hot from the dryer cause they can still be damp and then when they’re folded like that it can cause that moldy smell. Dry them until they cool down and make sure they’re completely dry, then fold them 👍🏼

For the towels, my mom soaks them in the bathtub every once in a while with the warm water, laundry detergent and some white vinegar. After that she just washes them like normal and the smell should go away :)

For the towels, make sure to clean the filter on your washer every couple of months (I didn’t know that existed for a solid year), use a washer cleaning solution, and use Oxyclean along with your detergent. I used to have the same issue but all of this fixed it!

Jesse, this is random and I haven’t read the rest of the comments yet but - you need the VALLASÅN towels from IKEA! The color choices aren’t ideal but these are thin, dry you super well without wetting you back (I don’t know how else to explain but I have sensory issues and these don’t give me the ick), AND they dry super fast! I’ve had them for years and they have never smelled mildewy! It could also be your washer, did you know you’re supposed to wash your washer? I didn’t, till my washer told me to lol also, if you have a front-loader, check the rubber gasket thing! But really, the towels are soooo worth it. They have washcloths, hand towels, regular towels, and bath sheets! My partner loves the sheets cause he likes to wrap himself up like a burrito. Ok, that’s all, happy you and Lily reunited!!

some advice for the smelly towels: 1. wash your tub using its clean cycle and some wash cleaner ( or hot water and a normal cycle) 2. wash your towels but only put like a little bit im talking like 1 or 2 tablespoons pretty much less than what the caps suggest. 3. use vinegar instead of softner 4. use oxyclean powder to get odor out and if washing whites get the white booster one
