The police are currently investigating deaths, possibly (most likely) by own hand of two 15-year old girls who fell off a roof last weekend here in Finland. It is the saddest thing, our nation has been devastated. One of the girls had the cult emojis on her profile. So far it is inconclusive if this is what caused their deaths. Either way, I am at a loss for words that someone could joke about these things to this extent. She opened the door to something dark. I am glad J&L covered this so I didn't have to google it any further myself.

I think her biggest mistake was ever thinking that grown ass adults with jobs, bills and families would ever interact with this content/storyline. Should've taken it to Tumblr (As other commenters have pointed out, her goal/intent feels very adjacent to tumblr fandom which was a huge creative outlet for a lot of ppl in the 2010's) but I guess younger gen z don’t know about that lol. What also irks me is her being a Sociology major. I've encountered many ppl like her who obtain a soc degree but somehow refuse to apply or make connections to what they’ve studied irl which is quite literally the point of the field IT IS REAL LIFE that's why we study it bc nothing exists in a vacuum. It’s just really frustrating to hear her say “I didn’t know words mean things” like girl duh that’s sociology 101 u freak 😭 just wasted 4 years of your life to somehow come out of it stupider. Anyway she'll be fine as long as as she don’t do no stupid shit that again 🤷‍♀️

There's a huge scientology building in St. Louis, and they had a sign outside of it that was advertising "personality tests". Before I knew what scientology was, I almost went and did it out of curiosity. Once I realized, I thought back to it and was like "wow. That's fucked up"

When I first started watching, because she said she was an anime tiktoker, I half expected the cult name to be a reference to Jujutsu Kaisen since there is a group in it called the Star Religious Group. The members are called children of the star, and they worship one specific character. All that is to say, I wouldn't be surprised if it had some impact on why that name was chosen, though I don't know anything about her. Regardless, thank you for the episode!!

woah! my friend from theatre school had a similar experience where she went to what she thought was an audition in LA and they took their keys to valet the cars, “lost them” and it ended up being a scientology recruitment thing

I was really young when this happened, but I realized later on in life that when my mom was going through her "crunchy" phase, she took me to a pretty covert scientology office when I was sick. I'm not sure who exactly told her, but she was under the impression that they were natural healers, similar to the chiropractor she took to me. I vividly remember them having me hold these two metal rods, and they pretended to read the different frequencies coming off of my body. They ultimately concluded that I had the flu, even though I had no symptoms: no fever, body aches, lack of energy, nothing. A big plus, however, was that my mom kept me home for a week because she believed them. But, apparently not too much, because we never went back.

This is a great way to ensure that these people (mostly children) are comfortable with the predatory aspects of cults. Using the idea/words of branding and sacrifices as “jokes” is a great way to lower boundaries and lower people’s discomfort at the idea. I hope the parents get their kids some help. I’m sure most didn’t take it seriously, but for the ones who did… they will probably be super susceptible to cults in the future. Maybe education on how to spot cults or predatory people. Again, most people probably were just joking. But most people who join cults want to be a part of something and don’t realize until they’re too far in.

As someone who also studied sociology, I do not buy for a second that she did not know. Cults were one of the first lessons ever! But also, I do think this is just a dumb joke and satire that went too far, and her reaction is very much in line with the ‘edgy teen’ vibe.

I'm a high school Social Studies and English teacher and this is wrong for a couple reasons like you guys already said. When I teach about a cult or manipulative government even, kids don't seem to fully grasp the power they have over people or the danger. In English if we read something that is satire, they often don't get that it's satire and supposed to be funny until I explain it. Also the lack of brain development like was already said. That's probably why so many young people are drawn in. I have a dark sense of humour but this woman is irresponsible.

Raised in a cult led by my Grandparents. I could get on board with the first, maybe even the second, video...but beyond that, this is crazy stupid. And to continue on as long as she did, should have consequences. Did she add the creepy music to her videos? I almost think that makes it worse, because of how our emotions can be affected by tones and frequencies. And children don't quite understand how to differentiate those feelings.
