I was just talking about this with my BFF. I feel like everyone is just throwing names around saying they are “in the Epstein files” and nobody actually verifies if it’s true or in what capacity. I think that’s by design for the people who are in it to have a degree of deniability and to throw red herrings about other people. It actually bothers me so much cuz this behaviour is quite literally ruining actual victim's credibility. I like to consider myself someone who listens to and believes victims, but I've been straight up ignoring a lot of the stuff I'm seeing now. I don’t know Jessi, I didn’t get any semblance of authenticity coming from this woman from the start. Her premise was so far fetched and her delivery was so over the top, not to mention exposing this on the internet like this. It came across as a horrifyingly wretched scheme to get even with her mom, full stop. As someone who works with victims of family and domestic violence professionally, I think we have to be very cautious in how we approach accusations that occur on social media—there is a performative aspect, and a certain type of personality that would risk exposing themselves so publicly that is a far cry from the typical victims we encounter in communities. Social media is an extremely powerful weapon, and it’s way too easy to film a TikTok in your car when your rage escalates. If we’ve learned anything through your podcast, it’s that people definitely lie on the internet.

This came across to me as one of the most unhinged ways to get even with a mom one could imagine, conveniently timed to current events. She’s a wretched person exploiting the worst aspects of social media, and how easy it is to crowdsource a witch-hunt and ruin someone else’s life.

Perhaps you’re desensitized to how nerve-wracking it would be for someone with no social media literacy or experience to try to fashion any sort of response to this overwhelming accusation, especially if one values their privacy. I feel extremely sorry for this mother, and I think any effort to discredit her is honestly despicable.

Also I’m puzzled by your assertion that we should “believe all victims”—this statement is axiomatic, because victims have already proven to be credible by definition. What you’re actually suggesting is that we believe all accusers, which on the internet is a dangerous ideology to follow—your own channel is an anthology of creators who have blatantly lied on the internet for self-serving motives. I’m a physician who provides care to victims of SA, abuse and violence. I’m sympathetic to your own journey of SA first and foremost. However, I do want to clarify that at the emergence of the #metoo movement, we all made a call to “believe women”—this was specifically a call to lawmakers, first responders, police and the courts to take allegations from women of sexual violence seriously, based on the disturbing rate of perpetrators of violence against women evading justice. Note that we did not say “believe all women”, we did we say that all allegations were true, and we certainly didn’t direct this call towards internet content creators, influencers or social media mobs. The point was for the legal system to take allegations seriously and to thoroughly investigate—not to assume any a priori conclusions of guilt. In the intervening years, we’ve seen innumerable cases of false allegations, and this prevalence is significantly higher on social media. There are all sorts of motives for false allegations—Elizabeth Teckenbrock and Bre Powers are two examples of false allegations being weaponized. There are unequivocally those who are willing to subject themselves to internet scrutiny and savage bullying online in the pursuit of secondary gain, and the woman in this story is a glaring example. People of all genders should be listened to when they come forward with allegations of being violated. They should not be assumed to be telling the truth without appropriate due diligence—this step is fundamental to our principles of due process. And as two creators with substantial influence over a wide online audience, what you choose to platform in these highly sensitive cases should be approached with extreme caution, as the accused have the potential to have their lives destroyed when these cases go viral—these are not issues that should be adjudicated online in any way, given the high stakes involved, the potential for narratives being distorted, and the exposure of those involved to an international audience of billions of people. Finally, this woman’s accusations don’t even pertain to sexual violence in any fashion; thus the premise of “believe accusers” you’re referring to doesn’t even apply here. She’s making a deliberate choice to come to social media for something that doesn’t belong there—her claims are wild, and should not be conflated with the plight of disenfranchised women who use their voice to seek help from local police officers or crisis centers. Please be more vigilant and careful with your platform. We desperately need to reserve our legal resources for those accusers who are indeed in need of justice, and we cannot afford any more backlash that results from false allegations being championed by social media mobs.
