This 1st ep was crazy, It's like they blended multiple chapters into 1 and made it seem like it was all at the same time. The manga felt more like a slower descent to madness but It all going downhill so fast kind of gives a unique creepy feeling.

Not exactly, it’s like pseudo-rotoscoped. There was live-action filmed, and that footage got turned into some form of 3D CGI motion capture animation and then that motion capture footage was drawn/traced over to make the final 2D animation that we see.

Honestly it's almost 1 to 1. It looks so good and I'm glad they didn't hold back on how wildly abnormal the art style is. Obviously adapting kind of loses the creepy feeling you get when you're reading alone in silence, but keeping things black and white was probably the best thing they could have done. I'd still suggest reading it though. It only gets crazier from here and Junji Ito's art is unmatched

Random fun fact but Geto's supreme technique "Uzumaki" is actually inspired by this manga if you go to JJK s2 ep 22 (11:46) you can see that Mahito looks similar to the grandpa but in the JJK manga it's literally a 1 to 1 copy of the way the grandpa looks

I’m really glad that they didn’t rush this project cuz the rotoscoping animation feels so smooth and fluid, but also has this uncanny feeling to it which totally fits the horror vibe🤯😱.

This show is only gonna be 4 eps but apparently they filmed live action actors for reference. Then rotoscoped and animated their movements over top of it in 2d. It's gonna look very real and very unsettling. Can't wait!!

Loved this first episode. Very disturbing which is what I wanted. I will say that this is the best way they could have done Junji Ito's manga art and style, but the CGI still throws me off a bit. Not enough for my immersion to break or anything.

Ah that explains it. I knew it had to be some sort of 3D animation. I like it in the scenes with people's faces, it adds a dynamic unsettling layer. When they're just walking or talking though I'd prefer it be 2D

I found out about this show/manga one day while I was in Ross with my mom looking for clothes and I found a sick as shirt with a girl with half her head as a spiral, who I now know is Azami. One of my most complimented shirts to this day. I was gonna read it till I found out they were gonna make a show. This shit is is so unsettling and creepy. Fire

So while the animation for Uzumaki did involve the use of CGI, the final product we see is still 2D animation. The animation process was basically a modified form of rotoscoping, first live action footage was filmed, then said live-action footage was converted into motion capture 3D CGI animation, then the motion 3D animation was traced over to produce the final 2D animation. This time and resource intensive process is part of why the anime took so long to produce (in addition to delays from Covid-19).

The CGI along with it being black & white really does make it look like a Manga in Motion. I've seen random freakshit panels of this manga and now I'm interested. It's been a hot minute since I've seen anything that has body horror on this kind of level. They don't make hardcore stuff like this no more it seems. The gore seems very ... sophisticated? Tasteful even? Like I'm creeped out, terrified but I'm not "grossed" out? This is very intriguing and I'm excited to keep up with it with the Roshigang. And again, people can't "just move" lol. There are people who literally have nowhere to go and this is a rural village town? They're damn near stuck here. Cursed to stay.

Also you know what this whole Spiral event is making me think of? It makes me think of Katamari. It's like the same, but in Katamari people have this obsession with rolling, merging and assimilating things into a ball from objects to animals to living people, which in of itself should be disturbing but the game makes it cutesy asf.

It's aiming more for "Disturbing" than "Scary". Nothing in it is really going to jump scare you or make you feel terrified. The disturbing art work also doesn't hit as much in animation as they can't go as much into detail as the manga panel does. I get why you say it's boring though, to me this has always been one of Junji Ito's lesser interesting stories despite it being his most popular one by far

Man right before the pandemic I had graveyard shift at Whole Foods stocking food and I would just listen to podcasts and music and I came across manga readings and UZUMAKI popped up. I was like Lupa hella scared of horror but I was like I’m gonna face my fears and listen to it because it’s one of the top mangas ever. And it was some guy named Horror show Mickey that did the narrations and it was the most eerily and amazing journey to experience. Honestly I’m happy y’all get to see it together and can’t wait to ride with you guys into the wild madness of the spirals.
