Kyōkotsu (also nicknamed Okyō) is one half of the manifested spirit of Shunsui’s Zanpakutō, who’s known for hide & seek games, and therefore hid the Ise clan’s sacred ritual sword. The Divine Zanpakuto SHINKEN HAKKYOKEN (Divine sword eight mirrors) It is a Holy sword that has the ability to take and reflect the power of deities into itself and disperses it off into eight directions. The blade itself reflects the power of the opponent that its wielder is facing; when confronted by the sword while utilizing a great enough power, opponents are unable to even see it due to how bright it appears to be at the time. A blow from the sword results in energy being dispersed in multiple directions at once. This ability was foreshadowed upon Lille Barro with Senjimaru’s Bankai which showed him shooting at mirrors and ended up shooting himself reflected upon him. Tragically as Nanao’s mother believed and assured that only members of the Ise clan would be affected little did she realize that the curse affects anyone in related association to them such as his brother, and would go on to affect everyone precious to him:, Yamamoto, Unohana and Ukitake.

Theory not sure if it's true but I think shinsu got the curse when he got the sword those near and dear to him started to die since he got it. His brothers wife, ukitake his best friend , unohana his mentor, and yammamotto his teacher/mentor all died and and left him something the other three left him the responsibility of the gotei 13 and the wife left the sword and her daughter essentially

Fun fact : This Sternritter X (The X-Axis), Lille Barro - his second form was based on biblical depictions of angels. In scriptures it was said that when Angels would reveal themselves to people, the first thing they would have to say is "be not afraid". And that still didn't stop some people from running away. So I guess Shunsui Kyoraku is Nanao’s paternal uncle? I’ve heard some people argue that because of feudal Japanese nobility culture Nanao’s mother would have remarried after returning to the Ise family and that Nanao’s actually the daughter of her mother’s hypothetical 2nd husband, but I feel like that relies heavily on assuming that every single aspect of Soul Society is identical to feudal Japanese culture (as there are some differences), and the was never any mention of Nanao’s mother remarrying and Kubo’s never commented on the matter after all these years, so I feel like Occam’s razor tells us that the default assumption/understanding is that Nanao is Shunsui Kyoraku’s niece?

I remember back in the day ppl were very upset of the fact that kubo pulled this sword being like a deus ex machina. The one and perfect counter for this one guy who is closest to godhood. Cant blame Lille tho, who would've known the shinigamis had that kind of weapon hidden. And what's more interesting, why is it this sword even exist? When previous generations said that this sword was meant to reflect the power of god, did they by chance foresee the events coming out now, or is there more to it? What kind of god were they reffering to?

I read somewhere that this sword might have been the one they used to cut up the soul king to pieces, hence the curse on it and how they know it can affect God's. Also this makes his fight with stark a lot sadder since both characters are the embodiment of loneliness

Well, there’s really only one deity that it could have been used on for everyone to be so certain that it could effect the gods. I can’t think of any other weapon that could sever the Soul King’s limbs.

Beautiful ep. We got to see both sides of Shunsui zanpakuto. Katen meaning Heavenly flower AKA "Ohana" which is just the endearment way/ nickname of Katen. Then we saw Ohana's child or really just her other half as she split herself in two to form the second zanpakuto shunsui use's called Kyokotsu or "Okyou" We see that shunsui is actually cursed, cursed to bare the responsibilities left to him by others, as well as to continue on as they die. then with Lilie we literally see a biblically accurate "Angel" fall from Gods grace. His falling being his "Death"

They mentioned that she went back to the Ise family but didn’t want her unborn daughter to suffer the curse which leaves us with the only obvious answer that that the unborn daughter was Shunsui’s brother.

So apparently, and this is word of mouth. We actually see Nanao hanging around Okyo a lot during the Zanpakuto rebellion arc. Which is one of the ones that Kubo actually had some say it. So her Zanpakuto being hidden inside Okyo was in a way foreshadowed all the way back then.

I do remember that this fight was a bit controversial back in Manga times what with the deus ex machina that is Nanao's secret zanpakuto and her of all characters basically downing a Godlike Angel in her first real battle. Me personally, was on the side of Kubo. I like a lot of the side characters of Bleach and Nanao is one and she's been getting some nice moments sprinkled during this war leading to this huge moment and I loved it. Yeah there's some issues like how all this came out of nowhere but whatever, I still liked how it was presented and it's not like it ruins anything important. Lille needed to be dealt with and he got dealt. The end.

I think the reason Nanao's sword has this ability, and why there is a curse on it, is that the Ise Clan holds the weapon that was used to chop off the Soul King's limbs. Thus it has the ability to "reflect a God's Powers" and injure them. Nothing else we've seen in the series can do this. Thus, the Soul King probably cursed them so that all the men in their family would die as punishment for continuing to hold onto the sword. Explains why the Central 46 treat it as a Sacred Treasure, and killed the mom for losing it.
