If you haven't seen it, back out now – full spoilers ahead for this A24 gut-puncher. But yeah, I need to rant because that finale destroyed me, and putting it into words feels like the only way to process. The ritual's whole mechanic is twisted genius – this "angel" entity hijacking a body, forcing it to consume and vomit up a soul while recreating the death exactly. It's not just body horror; it's profoundly disturbing, building a tension that creeps under your skin like nothing I've felt in a while. But it's the human fallout that really ripped me open, turning the scares into straight heartbreak. The absolute crusher is how it all ends with total loss – no victories, just empty devastation that leaves you hollow. Piper... man, my heart still aches for her. This pure, sweet girl with such an innocent soul, so full of trust and kindness despite everything life's thrown at her. She's left alive, sure, but what's the point when she's so profoundly alone? Andy was her world – the one person who truly cherished her, protecting her from the ugliness around them. His brutal, pointless death? It broke her, and watching that realization hit had me sobbing hard. Now she's got no one, carrying scars from the nightmare that'll haunt her forever, in a world of assholes who won't value her like he did. It's so damn unfair; she's the last soul who deserves this isolation, this endless echo of trauma. I wanted so badly to hug her through the screen – she's too good for this cruel mess. Laura's fate doesn't move me much – she wrecked so many lives in her grief-driven madness. But there's this buried hint of goodness in her, not entirely monstrous. That split-second when she's drowning Piper and hears the plea that echoes her daughter? It freezes her, maybe because Piper's innocence mirrors what she lost. The mimicry of her girl's final cries pushes her over – she can't finish it. Her dying without any payoff adds to the tragedy, but it's the overall waste that guts me: all the deaths, the suffering, for zilch. No resolution, no comeback – just nothing. Cathy's soul doesn't transfer, Ollie's wrecked beyond repair physically and mentally (who knows if he'll ever recover), and Piper's "win" of surviving feels like the ultimate cruelty. She's breathing, but burdened with a lifetime of pain and solitude. That's what shattered me most – the utter pointlessness of it all. So much agony, leading to zero. It struck me as the worst imaginable end, even harsher than if the ritual had succeeded. Yeah, dark as hell, but think: if it worked, if the soul swapped in, Piper at least wouldn't suffer anymore. No dragging those memories, that loneliness, that hurt she doesn't deserve one bit. This gentle-hearted girl in a brutal world – being erased painlessly might beat the slow torture of being alone after losing her anchor in Andy. I cried my eyes out picturing her future, knowing she'll never find that kind of care again. Haven't been this emotionally wrecked by a film in forever, tears I didn't see coming from horror. What about you all? Did the ending break you too, making you wonder if a "successful" ritual would've been a mercy for Piper? Or am I just too in my feels? I agree the ending’s super depressing, and I kinda wish they’d kept him around, maybe incapacitated like you said, to give Piper some hope. For me, though, the ritual failing felt even worse – all that pain for nothing left her so alone, and I almost think a "successful" swap might’ve spared her the heartbreak. Yo like amazing thesis, all I can say is I agree, I think this movie is definitely in a league of its own when it comes to causing the watcher despair. There hasn't been a movie that has hit me like this one in a while. Even if you don't like the story structure or the genre being very gore horror, I think that it's impossible to deny that qualitatively when it comes to writing making sure that there is no wasted moment and that everything is executed properly, there hasn't been a horror movie of this caliber in the 2020s

Hey, thanks so much for the props on my take. I totally agree, this movie’s on another level when it comes to crushing your soul; I haven’t been hit this hard by a film in a long time. Even if the gore or story setup isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, you’re spot on – the writing’s so tight, every moment feels deliberate and perfectly executed. Honestly, it’s hard to think of another horror flick this decade that pulls it off with such raw impact. And man, if I were in Andy’s shoes, seeing that frozen body in the freezer when Wendy and I got there? I wouldn’t have bolted to show her and call the cops – nah, I’d have hunted Laura down, knocked her out cold with whatever I could grab. Jail or not, I wouldn’t care – just knowing she punched Piper would’ve been enough to set me off, no second thoughts needed. Still can’t get over how much I feel for Piper though; it’s eating at me. Think I’ll light up a smoke to cope. 😔🚬

Yeah hundred percent like, when Wendy was getting ambushed by Laura upstairs, I wouldn't have stayed downstairs I would've gone upstairs and made sure that Laura was restrained or something because like, it should've been evident that she's a psychopath, but the guy was a concussed kid so it's like what can you do. This is the second time I've watched this movie, the first time I watched it was in the theaters and I was basically depressed all night after it lol

That being said, in my opinion the depression aspect of the endings that these guys give to their movies and like the hopeless sort of “half victories”, even in talk to me the friend’s younger brother ended up surviving but the protagonist died, here the younger sister ended up surviving but the protagonist died. These kinds of endings where there is no way for you to feel fully at peace is what really sets them apart from pretty much every other type of movie that's out right now. These guys are like unnecessary evil lol.

Andy was her person: He was the one who really understood and tried his best to protect her from everything - Even how abusive their father was to him; Which is something he had to burden for her. Watching her cry grapefruit was hard to watch and I completely understand the writers intent but it just didn’t land for me at all. I feel like dark endings land when they have something to say like in their previous film: the protagonist is consumed by their addiction to the hand and becomes part of the game that ruined them. Tragic but it makes sense narratively. Here it just felt hollow - What does Andy’s death say for his character? For his sisters? There’s something there I’m sure about grief being a destructive force and wanting us to feel as hollow as the mom maybe? but I don’t feel like it’s fully formed and that’s just speculation on my part. I still liked the movie but yeahhhh that hollow feeling is not great

Laura did say earlier in the movie was that she just wanted to hear Cathy call her Mum one more time, and in the end, that's all she got. So I did actually feel for Laura, even though obviously she went way too far in trying to bring her daughter back. And if she worked at that foster agency (or whatever its called) for 20 years, I did get the sense that she was probably totally normal and a good person before her daughters death shattered her. Just a bummer of a movie even though I thought it was great 😅

I don't think it's necessarily about trust with Piper? She can't rely on sight, and Laura set up all of the other sensory cues to make it seem like Andy hit her. And then she has to learn Andy DID hit her at one point, a bunch of other things kept from her, and a violent scene that she could only catch the audio of, all of which hardly helped his case. Can't blame the girl for being manipulated.

From what I interpreted the first time I watched the movie. It was a demon who was just taking over this body (Oliver) hopping from to body to body when this ritual was done. I believe the dad just died, and Andy was truly just losing it with how Laura was driving him to insanity. Honestly that last scene I think the demon just straight up decided to give it up, it knew it wasn’t getting it’s just an decided to give back the body cause honestly what good would it do it to keep the host at that point.

The antagonist in this movie didn’t get what they deserved, still refreshing to see a bleak ending every now and again tho. If they just had them reverse the magic-fuckery might not have hit as hard. I liked that this awful person who happened to be grieving do whatever it takes to negate a natural force like death. She used her counsellor knowledge to bend and manipulate everyone, but failed horribly at executing. I still wish we could have seen her get put into some kind of genjutsu where her daughter punches her awake every day or some shit 🤦🏾‍♂️

literally. stupid decision after stupid decision. i had to give the children some leeway because they’ve been through a traumatic situation and are still just kids after all, but the social worker ? pissed me off. if someone’s claiming a missing person sighting, then that’s for the police to deal with. not you because you think you know this woman. like what were you going to do if you saw the child ? (and did) just unprofessional. and that’s why her ass died.

like at the end when she did see the missing kid and cathy’s body they started running to the car and was most likely going to the police, but this would’ve all been solved if the police was contacted in the first place 😭

The more I think about it I believe Laura killed Andy and Paige's father. She worked case worker Wendy for years and didn't notice any red flags with her. It's very plausible that Laura got access to Wendy's paperwork and flipped thru until she found some girl with similar characteristics as her dead daughter then manipulated events from there.
