(Commenting before I watch) I went to a free screening of this back in September. One of the best decisions I made this year. I love this movie and it introduced me to a lot of great actors. Y’all should watch Rye Lane for a palate cleanser and hear David Jonsson’s natural accent lol. I hope y’all don’t cry too much(looking at you, Lupa) Okay, now that I’ve finished watching I just wanna say I loved watching this movie with you guys. I first read this book back in 6th grade, they changed a lot of stuff for the movie but I remember a character died from blue balls? I have to reread it to see the other changes, like the crowds cheering the walkers on. This was one of Stephen Kings first books, when he used to go by penname Bachman.

1) it was required to show the deaths, stephen king wouldn’t greenlight it without them being shown (besides Art ofc) 2) i genuinely believe this movie would not be as impactful if the boys all turned on each other. All of them sticking by each other and the genuine friendship/love they showed one another is what MADE this movie a masterpiece

This movie from my perspective is a huge allegory for the cycle of nationalistic violence and the way the military-industrial complex preys on young men to fight in wars that have nothing to do with us. Each contestant exhibits classic recruit drawbacks (homesick, lying about age, hidden medical issues, etc). The big war in the movie isn’t shown to us but it’s implied to have devastated the whole country, meaning that the nationalism skyrocketed. I have more thoughts on this but imma cut it here. The bond these boys share moves me so much, man. I’m only 22, and I can’t even fathom my life ending so tragically. Might read the book honestly…

what probably drove pete to kill the major was everybody cheering in the end because of the words ray told him earlier. pete always tried to see the good in everything but there literally is no good in a whole nation cheering for 49 innocent and worthless deaths. the ONLY things i can say i don’t like about the ending is the fact that art’s grandma never got his jesus piece and the fact that they weren’t able to keep their pack for olson.

I know King has said he didn't intentionally write the original story as an allegory for the Vietnam War but I think with that in mind the ending, with Pete's good nature giving way to grief and vengeance, is tragic but does work. That said I do think the alternate ending of Pete staying true to himself would've been a bit better. 8/10 movie. David Jonsson was the MVP.

Apparently there’s an alternate ending where months had passed & Pete had large amounts of money sent to Ginny (Ray’s mom), Clementine (Hank’s wife) and Art’s grandmother in envelopes. The money kept coming for months & months. And Art’s grandmother was sent a rosary & a cross, because apparently that’s what Art asked them to give her after he died. Thats seemingly what he took from around his neck. People didn’t seem to like this alternate ending though.

The fact that they did so much method acting for this is wild. They walked for 15 days to film this in 100-degree conditions , and pretty much stayed in character the whole time so the breakdowns you see aren't faked. The scene were ray has blood in his shoes was real and they just threw it in.

Dawg, I was tryna maintain but there was one moment I think after the guy chanting died when Sheera looked over at Lupa and it looked like she seen how he was struggling... i might be reaching but still, in that moment, I lost it fam.. I get their confusion with Pete and where it doesn't seem like he gets alot of warnings. The first warning he got was when curly died when he went to pull Ray forward because slowed down when Curly was shot. He recieved warnings when pulling him away from his mother and then warnings towards the end when it was just the two of them. I don't think he got any warnings on the hill. Pete was just Him and all his warnings just involved his interactions with Ray.

Yeah. The one playing Stebbins was genuinely sick, especially near the end, everyone had blisters, blood in their shoes, intense dehydration, and bug bites. They even kept walking in their sleep, and stayed in character while dilerious and barely awake. All of the cast and crew were pretty much suffering the whole time. I gotta give it to the dedicated actors cause I couldn't do it

the book is much more explicit about ray questioning his sexuality bc it has an inner monolouge but pete's is more specific in the movie even tho it's subtle (he pauses for a while that first night when ray asks if he has a girl then says no which causes ray to slow down) but yeah it's a both are valid interpretations thing imo 🤷🏾‍♀️

Fun fact for anyone who doesn't know, the book actually ends differently. In the Book, Pete sacrifices himself as expected, and Garrett who is very delirious at this point, just continues to walk. That's it. Personally I prefer the book ending because of the dark undertone of none of it mattering, feels more real

I still think in a way it's a dark ending. Pete was an optimist who wanted to do good with his wish, but at the end of the walk he chose violence. Like the book, no one really won.
