So that moment with Maki and her mother is kinda interesting. On one level, yeah, Maki's mom was aware of what was going to happen, so she was complicit given that she didn't just outright tell Maki what awaited her. But, for a woman who says she never once was happy she'd given birth to her, she did still try to stop Maki from going. So, to Maki, that was also a sign that her mother cared for her more than she was willing to let on. She probably had to hate her children more than she did as a byproduct of how her husband likely drove it into her how worthless HE thought they were since they impaired his prospects within the clan. Just a weirdly touching moment amidst a family as fucked up as the Zenin.

You kind of get the impression he subconciously realizes it by how he calls it a "shallow" technique. Projection sorcery requires an ability to, even at SUBSONIC speeds, project 24 frames of movement forward in order to work. The precision that requires going THAT fast is insane and the ability clearly has nuances and tricks to it that make it really hard to counteract. Meanwhile Ogi, just has a blade he can extend with cursed energy. He's proficuent in it, but it's very simplistic. Ogi probably views it as a very traditional (and thus in his mind, superior) technique that should naturally be superior to a technique involving projection/frame by fram animation, sonething which has likely only existed for like three, maybe four, generations given how its tied to principles born of "modern" animation. Ogi can't even accept that a new technique could trump his likely hundreds of years old swordman technique. He's inherently inferior and he can't accept that, so he blamed his children for it.

Beside this all Tabata fights were AMAZING, the fight for Tengen was top 3 in the arc for me and probably the last fight in the season with Sukuna involved was also sooo hype. The fact Maki/Mai paradox only works because they’re identical twins is super interesting to me. I think it was Sheera that was mentioning how Maki was still hearing Mai talk to her while she was fighting? It’s because Mai used her ability to create that second sword that Maki has. It definitely has Mai’s cursed energy in it, which is why there was traces of cursed energy from the sword left after she killed the rest of the Zenin clan…but I also like to believe that Mai is still alive in a way, existing through the swords cursed energy and within Maki’s heart/memories.

Now complaining isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when the season has a production value on par with something like Frieren, complaining that "The pacing was quick in an arc that was also quick in the manga" is genuinely crazy. After stewing on it and my hype finally calming down, I can see why the JP side didnt like this episode. For me, the music ruined it on rewatch. As much as I loved Kill Bill, it doesnt work well here because this is suppose to be a horrific one sided genocide of an entire clan. The fights, animation and so on were great but the only thing it bothers me is the scale and impact the end battles between the hei and nayoia vs maki were. Given who they are and their position in the story, they had a huge impact in the surroundings and how grandiose their abilities are. They made it too spectacular in my opinion because given what future fights await us the whole of japan should be destroyed. But maybe its just me.

I can see where some fans can have issue with this episode due to the break-neck pace. The manga took time to explain what was happening in each of the fights, but the anime skips most of the explanation and just speedruns through the battles. I’ve seen some people be confused who touched Maki’s shoulder in the final fight, and they didn’t realize it was a part of Naoya’s technique. So while I thoroughly enjoyed the episode and thoughts it is one of the best they’ve done so far, I can understand why the Japanese fans were a little disappointed by the pacing (and not to mention the tone, which was Kill Bill inspired).

I have to ask, am I the only one who thinks this type of animation during the fight is low quality? I had the same kind of issue with the Naruto/Sasuke vs. Momoshiki fight. I think the animation has a lot of personality and style but overall it seems like a lot of still frames with moving backgrounds, “rotating the camera” effect, and DBZ style attack loops and I’m supposed to ignore it because the fight is hype and people keep running fast, soaring through the air and blowing things up

Not exactly a style but this general approach to animation can feel weightless, lack anticipation in each action or strike and be unpleasant to read. It's also very dependent on good editing. For me, in this case, it's just on the edge of still working and I genuinely enjoyed the episode BUT I also preferred the slightly different energy of episode 1 for example. Mind you, this still Mappa, so overwork, time crunch and the fact that they crammed so much story in 28min means this is not quite as good as it could be

They're not just punch-kick men/women, they have trained their bodies to withstand the heavenly pact to the point they can overwhelm people who are supposed to be stronger than them. I would say putting this on gender doesn't really make much sense too considering this is JJK and the representation of women in the series is a whole lot better than other shonen and even in a lot of shoujo. This is clearly from the direction of the episode since it's a big heartfelt moment from the manga.

Yea “low-quality” is a bad way to say it, but I feel like they opted for periods of low movement and a lot of effects like 18:35-18:45, mixed in with sequences with what I called DBZ animation like 17:20-17:30. Personally, I think like people said I prefer simpler fights where this type of animation is sprinkled in for effect, but not the whole fight. Also got to a point where I felt like it was a car chase scene in an action movie that went on too long, I’d rather substitute the long sequence of slicing up background characters for a shorter sequence where you can see the movements better (closer to any of the Sukuna or Toji fights from previous seasons).

TS 4:32 Ya know, this is why I watch and love dubs. The context in subs can be SO confusing at times. I JUST rewatched this in dub with BW and this scene finally makes sense to me. Notice her demeanor change when she says the final lines about making her proud. The mom actually SUPPORTED what Maki was doing the entire time. However, she still had to follow the rules, as she was a woman in the Zen'in clan. I thought the end was wierd, but now it makes sense. She never said those final words to Maki outloud. Only a whisper. So Maki still kills her because she doesn't know her mom actually cared. However, she didn't finish the job, which makes me think that they both must have talked for at least a second before the finishing blow. Something like: "Wa-... wait, Maki...!" "...!" "D-did... Y-You... Kill.. Kill them all?" "No. That asshole still lives. I bet he's limping around somewhere, but he'll be dead soon." *internal smile from mom* "G- Good... Girl..." *Maki instantly freezes up midway through the final attack, tears up, camera pans to side profile, glasses fade to white, she pushes them back up with her finger and she turns and leaves* "You finally made me proud"

Mai already had a low amount of cursed energy herself. Not only that but her technique Creation is heavily curse energy-intensive. So if things were reversed Mai wouldn't have gotten like broken levels of power. Gojo even said that someone's potential in jujutsu is mostly decided from the moment they are born. Sure they can work to attain some more power but they are essentially born with a power cap. Some people are just Like That, most others aren't.

Honestly though, you gotta have 0 media literacy to not understand what happened with Maki and Naoya, they were the only ones still alive in that whole mess, plus, we already knew how his technique worked since his father used it in last season (even using the 1 sec freeze thing a few times on the octupus curse) and we also saw him fighting against Choso just a couple episodes ago.
