vivi actress is good, and they picked a very good looking one for it as well, its just kind of upsetting that this makes the impression that the analogous counterparts (as in egyptians) are dark skinned, when in fact they can be extremely white as well. no, being middle eastern =/= immediately equals being tan or dark skinned, thats called prejudice. My family tree can attest to that. like, how do you end up being racist by trying to not be racist on purpose lol.

I've never watched an episode of One Piece and thought it was corny, probably because it's anime and Japanese, so there's a cultural aspects I wouldn't get. I probably just gave it a pass. I like this live-action series way more than the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series. At least the manga creator works with the showrunner, so any changes he's okay with, unlike the Last Airbender series where they think they know better than the creators.

again, not upset by the fact that shes dark skinned as in "I dont like dark skinned people", that would be stupid. It's upsetting because to the average viewer this says "Egyptians and middle easterners are obviously dark skinned because I've seen it on a TV show" which does the opposite of do justice what actual middle easterners look like, which sometimes can indeed be whiter than white. the director basically applied "reverse-reverse-racism" LOL.

I love that other people enjoy it, but yeah i get pretty cringed out. Someone mentioned the anime can be cringe - I've never cringed at the anime, but One Piece is an anime that takes full advantage of the fact that it's a cartoon. Animations generally are much more expressive on purpose, animators are taught to exaggerate reactions and emotions, but when you translate that to live action wholesale it (to me, at least) reminds me of early tiktok memes of teenagers mimicking animated expressions. Which might be why a lot of live action adaptations try for a more serious route, but it doesn't make sense to do that with One Piece cause the whimsy is SO integral to what OP is. Not that any of that matters, it sucks that I can't get past my own issues to enjoy OPLA but I'm glad others enjoy it and it's brought more fans

Campy is like super deliberately over the top and exaggerated. It’s when they lean into the nonsense and goofiness and instead of trying to ground it they just make it part of the world. Like Scott Pilgrim or the Og Adam West Batman series.

I get that its a "me" problem, but nothing says I can't share that "me" problem to see if anyone can relate.

To be honest it is incredibly well done but first of all one piece is really really cartoonish in the first place and that doesnt translate well into real life. Secondly it is unfortunate that the level of acting is sooooo spread out and mostly at the amateur level, the casting - appearence wise is almost perfect - but the overall quality of the writing behind it all suffers a lot because of that. Specifically Inaki as luffy always feels painful, the looks and vibe is perfect but the acting skill is at a really early amateur level. Yes people say luffy is hard to play but no, regardless inaki is a really bad actor and I dont understand the masscope on that but its kinda fine because its still okay. What I really love about OPLA is how different and restructured the plot and timeline is. It works in the live actions favour and it is still overall a really fun watch. I think with what they have and with whats possible they did a fantastic job, almost perfect to be honest and they took advantage of their artistic liberty in the most optimal way. It doesnt have to be a 1:1 adaption of the anime and it wouldnt work in the first place so yes it is sometimes cringe but it works, it plays into its strengths you cant really wish for more to be honest.

Egyptians in media have historically been whitewashed (except when we play tertiary/background characters or villains), it’s just very recently that the pendulum swung way back and we got more melanated casting. The truth is Egyptians come in a plurality of shades, though neither deep pigmentation and low pigmentation are the majority; the predominant shade is in between, leaning on the low end. Black skin and white skin are both Egyptian representation, but your backwards understanding of racism got you mad about the skin tone (white, “tan”, black, all work for Vivi as a stand in for Egyptian), rather than not piking someone with Egyptian heritage or from a close European, African, or Middle Eastern country. But hey, again, your colourism makes your take believably an Egyptian take.
