it’s okay, roshi. i agree with the acting of luffy. there’s definitely rough moments / scenes, but it doesn’t diminish my enjoyment of the season ! i think inaki’s probably doing his best with what’s given / being directed. it helps that not *all* of his line deliveries are bad.

I'd argue that Inaki does a great job portraying exactly how Luffy is. He says and does a lot of nonsensical shit. And even in the manga/anime Luffy wasn't really doing a whole lot in this arc, besides fighting Zoro which was dumb af. Glad they left that out

I think Inaki does a great job and is honestly the best casting in the series. Luffy is just characteristically impossible to portray in a live action and have it be good and yet Inaki does a great job with what he's given.

Could be true. I haven't watched the anime and also think he's doing a good job. He really sells the innocent, happy go lucky, slightly dim-witted, do-gooder shounen protagonist vibe. So it feels believable that the characters he meets would find him endearing and inspiring, or want to protect him. He's a large part of the reason why I like the show.

as someone who’s only watched the live action, i’m here to refute this. it’s a little rough. 😬 that’s just me though. that being said, i know luffy can be hard to portray so i don’t want to talk too down on him.

i also have questions . . i just feel very in the middle about it all because i think that sometimes an actor is only as good as the directors and angles and lights they’re portrayed in allows them to be. so, there’s probably multiple things going into it feeling off; but it’s weird because i think it also works other times (and when it works it works well). luffy is endearing in this to me. i just think that *some* of the line deliveries could use more work. too many lines for my brain to simply ignore i guess.

I think it's tough with Inaki because there are definitely scenes where he does a good job and others where I think he tries to emulate Luffy so much that it can come off awkward, but like Roshi said it's a hard character to play especially if you don't want to stray away from how Luffy is in the anime.

Inaki is good at doing Luffy most of the time. It’s really only when he says the classic King of the Pirates line or shouts in the air like an anime character is where it feels jarring. But nothing much you can do about that of course, would’ve been nice though if the director had Luffy turned down more lol

Some people definitely need to do a rewatch of the anime to see how cringe Luffy is and how some of the characters were cause that’s why some people think the acting isn’t as bad as others people say. And it’s not more so that the acting is bad but more so Luffy is such a super over the top and wacky character, it’s gonna come off really weird when you see a real life person portray that in live action and also keep in mind people mainly watch the anime in Japanese so it’s one of those cases if you hear it in another language it sounds off which is why I cut Mackenyu some slack as Zoro cause I’ve seen other roles where he’s speaking Japanese and it hits harder cause his voice sounds much deeper in Japanese so I be like oh if he said certain lines in this show in that language it wouldn’t feel as off

As for the Inaki discourse. I feel like it's definitely a directing and/or scripting problem. Watch any of the cast interviews and this dude's goofy ass charm and charisma shines, you can very clearly see why Oda chose him. They just need to let him be a little more loose on screen.

The dialogue for the characters have gotten worse this season, I’m not surprised he finds Luffy off. He and other characters felt off, cuz some of the dialogue is just bad. Not to mention English isn’t Iñaki’s first language

Many of the outfits comes straight from the volume covers and splash pages in the manga. It’s a cool way to change the crews outfits while still being accurate to the manga!

Imma try to keep it spoiler free but ifykyk, the live action is taken things from later storylines and sprinkling a lot of lore in this, when you eat a devil fruit you also obtain it’s personality, so I feel like directors told inaki to portray luffy as such “overly cartoony” like I said ifykyk. But it just doesn’t translate well sometimes. If you watch interviews and press stuff he’s great literally what luffy is supposed to be, but in this live action he’s seems over saturated and useless(his powers).

Even in episode 2 they had to cut the negativity for the final yt cut because he just randomly spews out “don’t want to kill anyone’s emersion but the ships dry” like holy nitpick and with inaki he’s doing incredibly well. It’s one of his first roles Oda loves him and he’s a latino portraying a character from Japanese media in a Hollywood production that’s quite difficult.

There's no way people don't know/remember how extremely cringe Luffy can be in the anime sometimes (lots of times). I mean, I remember when I was younger (literally single digit) when I watched Luffy in One Piece or Naruto in... well, Naruto, I found both of these main characters to be so extremely cringe. I was a literal child and even I couldn't handle the goofiness of them. I even stopped watching both shows because it was almost embarrassing to watch. I did go back to watch them a couple years later, learning to accept its cringe, but it never stopped feeling cringe. Hell, even now, a decade later, I watch reactors react to the anime of One Piece and I still get that deep, chest-concaving, gut-sinking cringe that comes with some of Luffy's lines and actions. Doesn't mean I haven't learned to enjoy the show anyways, just have to ignore those parts. I think the live action's Luffy's actor is doing a great job, I've not felt "This is not my Luffy" even once in this show. He's actually crushing my expectations; I expected the acting to be 10x worse for a character as weird as Luffy. I know all these sounds like negatives, but please understand that I still watched the entirety of Naruto and up to 700 episodes of One Piece regardless because I still loved both of these shows. I don't know what Roshi dislikes about Luffy's actor, he hasn't really elaborated, he just says that the actor takes him out of it, which doesn't really mean anything to me, wish he elaborated.

Mostly it was a gag to show how Luffy sees the best in people to the point of fighting Zoro over it because he starts fighting the people who gave him food (they gave me food, they can't be bad!). They kind of do a bit of that with the donut shop but its not the same.
