ok so age in korea is a little different and confusing from an outside perspective. there's international age and korean age. (TLDR bc this got long as hell: add 1 or 2 years to your birth year for korean age) international age is like how most countries do it where you come out the womb at 0 years/1 day old. then when it's your birthday a complete calendar year later you're a 1 year old. Koreans traditionally consider you 1 out the womb bc those 9-ish months count. Then you also add a year every new years (Jan 1st) regardless of your actual birthday. So simple formula for it is birth year +1 (ex: born 2020, youre 1. next year 2021 youre 2, etc) BUT if you have a later birthday closer to the new years it's more like +2 bc you already had your birthday BEFORE Jan 1st. (if youre born Dec 31st you're 1 on day 1, but the next day it's Jan 1st so you're 2 😭) It was only recently (3 years ago) that the korean government decided to adopt the international age system for legal documents and administrative info, but many koreans still use the korean system when saying their age bc that's what they grew up with. some ppl switched to international age bc then they're a couple years younger again lol. HOWEVER legal age of adulthood is 20 korean age and 19 international age in korea (legally old enough to get drinks, go to clubs, etc). So because Jian is 20, she probably just turned 20 in korean age and she's still 18 internationally hence why ppl treat her like a kid bc she just got out of high school. this show came out in 2024, but they still use the korean age system and it's also a toss up whether or not the localization of the subs will use international or korean age. Again, TLDR: it can help to subtract 1 or 2 years from any age you hear in korean media if things get confusing plot wise bc their age system is different (ex: someone being 20 and a senior in high school)

someone explained it in more detail, but age of majority in korea is 19 (going by international age) / 20 (going by the old korean age system, which as of 2023 legally doesn't exist). the old age system is mostly a social or personal preference thing these days, so without a directly stated birthdate on screen it's not clear if she was just rounding up her age or not. either way, she only *just* became an adult if she is one, and since the cops seem to know her casually by name, it's likely this was a "girl, settle down and call your uncle" routine thing lol

you're fiiiiine, explaining korean age always turns into a thing because it was the legal standard until like three years ago, so for people who aren't familiar it's like, "so here's a set of rules to understand this show, but btw any recent show might use it or might ignore it entirely, it's a toss up honestly" and it's a little bit of a headache lol

I'm digging this premise; seems like the uncle imparted some combat skill to his niece without divulging how dangerous his life and associates truly were. I wonder if he took her in out of guilt because he got the rest of his family killed...? Maybe that was why he was so distant? She was smart not to protest during the viewing at the morgue though; while she's distressed at the thought of her uncle taking his own life I agree with Roshi that she probably suspects that something else happened. And if that's true and the cops are lying. she's in even greater danger because then the killer isn't only dangerous, but they have influence too. Her childhood friend/sidekick is cute and has useful tech skills but he's ether going to level up fast or lose a lot of blood... That's just my gut feeling, and I wonder who this woman at the door is; she's packing, but she might be a former ally/frenemy of her uncle who was too late to help, because she seems just as distressed when the sniper had them all pinned. Looking forward to episode 2. Grateful to watch these K-Dramas that I wouldn't have experienced if I wasn't a member here.
