finaalllyyyyyyyyyy yayy

J Man

Stairway to Heaven is actually a good older KDrama

miz

all time classic, you know ball

J Man

The noodle soup Ri made at the beginning was Korean Miso Ramen (Doenjang Ramyun). Korean Miso has a more complex taste compared to Japanese Miso. Korean Miso is mashed beans with the skin still on, giving it more flavors. Japan Miso has a cleaner taste since they filter out all the skins and add clean carbs to it. I personally alternate between both.

AbstractDread

Imma just check for these on Sundays from now on but man am i glad that they're finally watching this.

J Man

I still need to see Winter Sonata. The more famous classic the main actress from Stairway to Heaven was in. I hear that got a anime too.

Clare

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY SHEERA❤️❤️

Joshua Shane

Had to come watch immediately!

kai. 🩶

happy mother’s day sheera and to yall moms as well 🩶

Joshua Shane

Im not sure how or where they filmed the north Korean scenes but I do know that had actual north Korean defectors on the writing team to help them with how thIngs are in north korea

Dyastro123

Do....u actually believe....that when a movie takes place in a place like italy.......they ACTUALLY shoot in italy? It's usually mainly movie magic.

Joshua Shane

Oh I know was just trying to say im not sure if they made sets, did it in studio or used another country. I heard they filmed the north Korean scenes in a jungle areas of a nearby country, but forgot the details and didnt go back to look it up since its been a few years

Shakir Fo

A lot of those scenes were shot on Jeju Island

Dimple Trauma

Just for additional context. The reason the soldiers and the female lead sometimes dont understand each other is because conversational korean in SK is different from in NK. Due to global linguistic and cultural influences and just a more generally more casual culture, there's a lot of words, like donut, ice cream, handcream, shampoo, etc that would be called by their english/japanese/chinese/whatever other culture names in SK but don't exist in NK korean. That's why he didn't initially understand when she asked if they had cellphones because the word for cellphone in SK is an English loan word that doesnt exist in NK. It's hard to translate it into english, especially since certain NK words also dont really have a colloqiual english equivalent. So, whenever she seems confused just keep in mind they're probably using a word or phrase that she's never heard or vice versa.

I feel like crash landing should be 2 times a week since its a 16 ep series. It's gonna take 4 months to complete if its once a week. Though I understand yall choices of have it ince a week since each eps are long.

WTT_321

They would’ve gone to a country similar to NK like Mongolia for example, to emulate the life in over there…

WTT_321

So we get another day of the main character being a damsel-in-distress which is totally understandable given that a chaebol like her is in a whole different world (like Jane from Tarzan situation)… 😅 Imagine the environment of living in NK like the boonies, where you potentially don’t have electricity & have to rely on the brightness of candles at night… ALSO, I’m sure somewhere along the line (and idk where this may happen since it’s been 5-6 years since I watched this), let’s just say some revelations will be revealed regarding Jeong-hyeok’s background (and explains why he’s “brave” as you put it)… what I mean is that it’ll be put to good use as an advantage 😬 Regarding the “locations” of the setting of this drama, they would’ve filmed this in a country somewhere similar to NK since it’ll feel authentic setting wise. ONE MORE THING: the epilogue at the end of Ep 1 is where Jeong-hyuk finds Seri before we get to them first seeing each other.

kringlekrisp

im not sure if anyone's commented it yet, but the main actress is also the wife in no other choice

WTT_321

Aside from the one Kdrama addict in the unit who can help translate what the “loaned words” mean lol 😂 I’d say it’s like if we put a modern person next to a countryside person next to each other, that’s probably what it would be like.

WTT_321

They’re also watching another Kdrama of their choice, so that’s also why they’re doing one episode a week…

A.

Stairway to Heaven is the kind of show that made me scared to watch kdramas due to the endless tragedies of the ones I heard of. I did go back and watch it after I got into the more lighthearted shows.

Olivia Cockayne

Still love the fact that the 2 main leads are married in real life.

fluffypuppy2k

guy please react to 'mr queen' please please im beging youuu

Isaiah Maldonado

I need yall to watch apex for one of these movies

Maleny

This is super random, but I think might explain a localization choice made here. In a certain London dialect (cockney), they do rhyming slang - You substitute the word you mean for something that just rhymes with it. 'Mince pies' means eyes, 'butchers hook' means look, "can you Adam and Eve it" instead of "can you believe it," shit like that. A really common one is instead of saying lies, they'll say 'pork pies' and its so often used people shorten it to 'porkies'. My dad used to say porky pies and he's not even from London. Also I can't remember 100% but I'd be genuinely shocked if we didn't hear someone say this one in Peaky Blinders or Top Boy. I think this might have been what the localizers were going for. Cockney rhyming slang, like parts of the NK dialect I assume, sounds basically incomprehensible unless you know how to make the connection.

Jamaal Ellison

I get that this is supposed to be a Romcom but she should be more way frightened than she is they do not fuck around in North Korea.

Sam

i kept saying hell nah too as i was watching along 😟, no hot water, no internet, house inspections

J Man

Usually also pointed out by the extra subtitles

Dimple Trauma

Unfortunately Netflix subs are super ass and never translate those

J Man

A lot of places go on sight or places that look similar. Memories of Alhambra (also staring Captain Ri's actor Hyun Bin), was filmed in Spain partially to match the story, but because it was too expensive they filmed most of the European scenes in Hungary and claimed it was Spain in the drama.

J Man

Don't judge me. As a dude, I use scented candles a lot of times for bath aromatherapy

J Man

Taking a bath in a bag

Mxri

I haven't seen this drama in soooo long thatI completely forgot about her mental illness and all that.

J Man

Countries like Switzerland, Canada, or Australia have legal assisted suicide, so travellers do go there to Alt F4. Because Canada is close to us, that actually got in our news cycle a few times due to how extreme it is.

Sam

kim jong un can personally come and collect me 😟 let’s just get it over with

Joni

idk if anyone mentioned this earlier but the two main leads r actually married in real life n it happened like 2 years after this drama so it's so cool seeing them act together here

Dilmurod

Yes, some rich/elite North Koreans can leave, but only with permission and usually for school, work, or government reasons. Kim Jong Un also studied in Switzerland

Weyoun

I'm so glad they're watching the post-credit scenes! 🙏

KrimzonHawka

A lot of important North Koreans have residences and send their kids to stay and learn at boarding schools in Switzerland. Even the current leader of North Korea essentially spent a good chunk of his childhood in Switzerland I believe.

Jamaal Ellison

@57:58 Brothers and sisters, that right there, my friends, is biblically accurate, textbook aura farming: the walk, the look, the music, the lighting, the fit. The physical manifestation of conquers haki.

Nita - Kento's Widow

I'm surprised it took her this long to break down, girl I would have been crying the moment you said there's no internet and the electricity goes every night. People were right when they said she practically got isekai'd 😭

moné

"this looks like hell" and it's ppl living in the countryside 😭😭😭

Jamaal Ellison

I'm so mad at that ending. He called her his fiancée. It was so obvious, and I still didn't see it coming. Can't wait till next week!

moné

but to be fairs their countryside is too country for me id take pyongyang any day 😭✌🏾

Samuela Shannon

57:20 Just so y'all know, that's the crazy guy from Parasite, who was living under the house and was that maid's husband

Drake Chuckle

This show creates a really odd atmosphere with all the dystopian living and happy gung ho music.

Drake Chuckle

Also @ the K-drama thing, it's a thing that North Korea has a black market for USB sticks of foreign media + other things as they showed in the ep

AbstractDread

I watched this once but never watch the end credit scenes so that's something new to me

J Man

I like how this episode did the whole black market. People snuggling rice cookers, body soap, KDramas, and even electricity. Head ajumma forcing the lower rank ajumma to produce electricity on a bike so she can watch her KDramas .⚡

Zay C.

Gang 1.2mil a year? Insane

Jamaal Ellison

First of all, I didn't know if there were an aftercrei'am watching episode 3 on the channel and they mentioned that this episode had an accurate scene, also assisted suicide is insane what a dark turn for a comedy like this, i wouldn't have even imagined a show like this would cover such a serious subject matter.

kdub

49:57 that skin product is actually from a really good brand lol

rickie woodson

i thought my show crush was going to be the brother with glasses but nevermind. seong-jun, i choose YOU! reminds me of a young se7en. SO FINE

rickie woodson

as someone who "knows better" id take the country life depicted here in the day time with the kids. quiet, peaceful, CLEAN air, no crime, no cops, no fear of being harmed, fresh organic foods... the city is full of crime, noise, buildings, cars, and the buzz of electricity from all the machines. no thank you.

rickie woodson

im thinking its that she seen that album cover when she was in switzerland
