Satella being Emilia from a fucked up timeline makes sense. Like she saw him die so many times and went nuts from not being able to save him, so she gave him the power to Return by Death. It’s like immortality, but from the perspective of a broken mind. And maybe she didn’t get to tell him she loved him in her timeline, so she repeats it like a one-track mind. It would also line up with the theory that Flugel is a failed Subaru. He made the tower to test Subaru and co. so they’d be able to overcome whatever stopped him. It also makes sense why Satella would have killed the other witches. They would’ve turned him into someone tainted by their respective deadly sins.

I HATE what they did with the ending because all it did was confuse nearly every reaction channel thinking he got his memories back No. It was just a creative choice to show what he wanted back. It was just a pit and death in the novel. I get why they wanted to add more but all it did was confuse people in what was supposed to be a really important moment about him becoming himself WITHOUT his memory and showing that he doesnt need them to still be him.

so to clarify Subaru didn't actually get his memory back, I could be wrong but the memories that are at the bottom of the tower are his memories he has made so far. when he says "I'm back" its him basically saying this version of subaru you choose to believe in is whole once again.

By the time the actual Subaru comes back, it ain't like he gonna take any of the shit this Subaru learned with him. This is literally just a weaker version of arc 4

Not really ... you think that's only because we see a pre Arc 3-4 Subaru with memory lost... but the plot is still different. He can't achieve the same growth he had before because Rem isn't here, nor is Echidna, nor Otto... so this arc isn't about him relearning what we already experienced in past seasons, but rather about Subaru discovering and resolving new and different things, having lost what he had already learned (but in some cases superficially he can understand a few things thanks to the people who accompany him and who know that other Subaru). Let's say it's like continuing your save file videogame to the next level but with increased difficulty and an empty inventory.

But subaru never really fully learned it, he still had self hate and downplayed every single one of his achievements, so him seeing himself from an outsider's view will help his self image dramatically. Also arc 6 isn't done yet, it gets better.

Self-lotahing, building relationships, relying on people, these people love me. It is literally just arc 3 and 4. And this Subaru isn't going to stay, so it is sort of a waste really.

@heated Subaru has not actively shown to hate himself since arc 4 and maybe arc 5 but downplaying your achievements isn't the same as self hate. And even in arc 5 he very much stopped downplaying himself after the speech he made

It's more obvious in the light novel, but in that speech he is still unsure of himself and feels that he has failed those around him, even though without him the city would be gone. And when things got really bad he still had the habit of trying to go off by himself to fix things. He has to see himself for the selfless man that he is, and to do that, he cannot be himself(kinda)

This Episode Was Everything And More! 10/10 on IDMB 2nd top anime only second to Frieren on the myanimelist website This season putting re zero on its true status, nothing less than top tier Reading this season scene was insane, but throwing in the season one ending songs Styl Helix and Stay Alive with a remix took this message of self-acceptance scene to the next level. His hair is still down and not back to normal, so I'm not sure whether or not his memories are truly restored… or maybe it is who could know…, but he did say "I'm back" after going through all of that, which was crazy. He definitely got his determination back. I do wonder where is Shaula in all of this, did Reid kill her when he came down? Reid is out here moving the exam date and she ain't crashing out to uphold the law. What part of the game is this?! Also, while Satella was enveloping Subaru in that dark sphere, saying I love you, he may have died permanently in that loop if Emilia had not intervened. Subaru is not like me since the instant a random bug grenade explodes in my face, I resign. Like I'm curling myself into a basketball and ensuring that the next hundred loops are just me taking naps. Also, if I were in that situation with the same circumstances and others told me I was lying about my memories being gone, I wouldn't need the other alter ego. I'd diabolically crash out and begin a whole triple big back ******** route (Iykyk). Can’t wait till August, cause we about see him redefine locking in.

Theme wise I can see that yes but this Subaru was thrust in a way more difficult position and basically got a season of development done in the span of a couple episodes. We also don’t know if he’ll retain these memories or not

I think you missed the point of arc 4. Arc 4 was about Subaru learning to share the burden with others, and him being able to rely on his peers for help. He also learned to value his life and to not just spam Return by Death. This is an important detail for the next cour because essentially Amnesia Subaru is still coping with the RBD ability while also “losing” all the character development that made Natsuki Subaru a hero. It’s an identity crisis. Naturally you will see similar themes, Subaru at the core WAS depressed. That didn’t change.

He literally didn’t trust anyone. - Without spoiling, The value of Arc 6 Subaru is to reveal that “The Hero” Identity that Pre-Arc 6 Subaru built up. Now that he lost his memories, there are essentially two Subarus, the Subaru with the long resume of wins and accolades (struggling to live up to) vs the Subaru that is scared, weak, and sometimes selfish (Which he didn’t believe deserved to be loved).

Little fun fact, when satella was covering Subaru in her hands, he was actually going to die permanently. It’s explained in the ln better when it happens, but he wishes to be “turned to ash” “erased from existence” “to never be born” and he was going to get what he wished for in the moment from satella. Echidna explains that Satella's witch factor was incompatible with her, resulting in a split personality. I think it was a really good choice of direction tbh. I understand why some poeple would be confused but the biggest give away as to why his memories didnt come back is his hair. His hair only changed after the anmesia-baru took place of our subaru, and since his hair hasnt changed back yet, his memories hasnt either.

I don't think he got his memories back. I still think that's S1 Subaru, but he's accepted what he's supposed to do. Essentially, he's no longer drowning in despair. Something tells me that he won't actually return to his normal self until Gluttony is dealt with.

I kinda feel that the theme isnt necessarily the same as the others. Rather, what they are doing here is "Is he still Subaru if we take everything from him". The whole thing has been revolving around "Who are you?" (even in the poster). Gluttony claims that your memories are who you are, and since im pretty sure we are dealing with gluttony here, this shows Subaru breaking through that, and choosing to become his self that he doesnt even remember. We as the viewer have witnessed the incredible growth he has had, and the strong bonds he has formed with everyone, yet that part of the story/his character has not been challenged yet. The climax we see here works wonderfully, both as a foil to gluttony, and as way to show us what i think is the real theme, which is that bonds can be strong enough to transcend memories.

I love how this parallels to ep 18 the most and there’s so much you can talk about but I’ll just drop one of my favourite aspects briefly, that being the whole identity topic of ‘who’ Subaru Natsuki is. When Subaru is at his lowest point In ep 18 he sees himself as worthless scum, a fake and a fraud just like how this current Subaru sees himself. In both episodes the girls that love him (Rem/Emilia) express their version of who Subaru is to them. They never ignore or disregard his own view of himself and instead make him aware of his ‘whole’ self which I think is so thoughtful and in turn powerful-they don’t have expectations of him based on a family name but instead have faith and belief in who they’ve seen and lived with, definitely deserving of best girl titles (Beatrice too but Patrasche has a special tier).

I don’t think Subaru got his memories back. If you rewatch the falling scene the memories that are being shown are everything that’s happened since Subaru lost his memories. I think Subaru is just locked in now because he knows he can trust everyone and that Emilia is his girl.

Honestly he didn't get them back, and idk why the adaptation tried to kinda imply it when said implication wasn't on the original. The last line of this part on the novel was: "And, it began in the place where everything became zero. A battle to kill Natsuki Subaru, and bring back “Natsuki Subaru”, commenced". Since it just began, our natsuki subaru is not really back yet. This is just amnesiabaru getting his determination to struggle.

Oh and the tri-dotted crossheir that was aimed at his head were the same as her tri-dotted eyes and it was gonna shoot him right in the head , which she's done 3 times when killing him. Even though the “I’m back” kind of makes it sound like he got his memories back, he still has the same hairstyle and paired with the dialogue prior it means he didn’t get his memories back and only gained a new resolve to persevere. I think it was more clear than not that he didn’t get them back but I can understand IF (which I think a some reactors and other viewers fall into this category) you just take at face value that last statement from Newbaru.

I think some shows will be harder to interpret than most animes. Pair that with the fact the trio watches so many shows and is watching different shows 1 episode weekly, it’s so easy for them to miss all types of information, intentional details, and forget past information from the anime. re zero is a prime example. I also have a fear sometimes that some shows the trio watches are just there for the sake of them to just get through it. I don’t understand how people see that Subaru got his memories back, when most of the arc has been about him not fathoming why people have such high expectations and trust in him. But now he understands why after realizing that old Subaru loved Emilia and was his strength for everything, so this new Subaru basically falls in love with her all over again. So a little frustration happens as a fan of the trio, but this is NOT a criticism, this is just me talking about the price we / or the trio pays with them having so much shows to watch + watching a seasonal weekly anime + anime’s being more complex to comprehend (kind of)

To anyone reading this, if you consider cut content from past seasons a spoiler I would highly recommend not reading comments on these videos out of an abundance of caution. Because some are major points that the anime left out. I'm assuming they will tie it in later in a different way. If you like to theorycraft and stuff they are probably things you have to know tbh but if you are enjoying the show and don't want to know any of that I would just suggest not scrolling. But if you do want to know, witchculttranslations (the website for the translated WN) has an info section that shows you in what chapter the cut content happened and then gives a brief description of what it was. It'll also give a warning on a scale of 1-4 on how important that information is to the story

And also in this episode Emilia is trying to jog old Subaru's memory and we get conformation that information is gone from Subaru's mind. Don't know how much clearer that can get tbh. But aside from that, I absolutely loved how we got here and this being the starting point of new Subaru's resolve is beautiful. Emilia using the same line he did in episode 1 when he saved her was just peak. Now it's her turn to save him. Cried so much this episode!

Yes, this is very good advice. As an anime-only fan who prefers not being spoiled, it's usually hard to participate in the comments section. I'm familiar with a few things the anime skipped, and I can't picture that information not being revealed in the anime later when it's more relevant. This makes it a spoiler for anime-only fans, so I really wish people would avoid talking about it here.

Yeah but i don't think people are being malicious about it. I think they're just excited and not understanding it from an anime only perspective. Just because it *should've* already been included doesn't then make it not a spoiler. Usually cut content is kind of like "extra" stuff the anime just didn't/couldn't adapt. But in this case it's actually really relevant information to have about the story. Some were probably because they didn't know they'd get more than one seasons but some others i really don't understand why so thought I'd just leave a way for people to explore that if they wanted.

I really doubt he got his memories back, maybe its something like he now has the resolve to keep going since he understands why they respect the orginal natsuki subaru. I personally dont think it was a test by the tower. When he killed meili he was acting a lot like the tiny dudes from the last season that eat memories. I forgot their names but the archbishops of greed. Maybe it has to do something with that.

In the rough drafts for the animation they originally had them falling out of the tower, you could see the sand dunes and tower behind them. The purpley artistic choice kind of lessened the impact of them falling which I don’t like.

Relax dude. He jumps into a portal of memories and revives saying “I’m back”. It clearly wants you to think his memories are back. So maybe it’s not a complete spoiler because there’s a clue or two, but in doing so, you’re not allowing anyone to hypothesize or wonder and just telling them whats happening, which isn’t fair to anyone. Instead of allowing them to be surprised when they find out his memories haven’t returned, (because not everyone notices a slight change in hair) you already took that away from them and me.

So I guess the questions I have so far are: 1. How did he lose his memories? 2. How can we get them back? 3. How did Rem wake up? 4. Why was her first actions to kill them? 5. How could she have possibly killed all them as easily as she did on her own? 6. How was him not telling them that he lost his memories at that time a big enough change for Rem to not wake up? 7. Why did Rem refer to him as hero right before killing him and talking as if she knows he'll come back to a checkpoint? 8. What is the meaning behind the cryptic "Subaru Natsuki was here" messages? 9. What was happening to him when he was talking to Meili, it seemed like he was being controlled by someone and didn't remember until he read her book.
