Re: the drop shadow; I could be wrong, but my initial thought was that they were trying to mimic the halo effect on old 2d animation from scanning characters onto the matte painted backgrounds/cels. you see that in old disney films, too and a large majority of old 2d animation. The style of Clevatess in general reminds me of older animation so that was my initial assumption on the halo and I didn't really stop to question it beyond thinking "huh, that's cool attention to detail".
