lol I think he's been interesting from the start. Even when he was an asshole, the dude was spitting facts about human society's weaknesses. He didn't have to be likable to be interesting imo

Whenever I rewatch this arc, her and the King are what I live for. I appreciate you really taking in that exchange between them. It's so sad that she'll be such a burden in this faux-North Korea if she loses even a single game, that she'd be so hopeless at that point that she'd kill herself rather than be a burden on her family. Her humility and lack of fear in that moment made the King look like such a petulant fool that he got embarrassed with himself; but at the same time it showed his integrity. No hesitation on ripping his own arm off, concedes nothing and tells Shiaia to come closer so he can kill him for insisting he go back on his "apology" to her. This episode is one of the greatest executed pieces of drama in any medium ever.

I think that's partly why this series is so rewatchable. So much is completely and utterly fresh; unlike other shows that feel like variations of the same thing, variations of the same type of character etc.

BTW man let me tell you -- when this was coming out in the manga, imagine all these new characters getting introduced, a complex plot, a huge shift away from the main characters, AND the author had some health problems at the time so chapters were quite sporadic. Like you say you have trouble sometimes trying to track where the show is going, that is definitely not your fault and not just you, because shit got complex fast. Now imagine trying to keep it in your head with just one chapter a week at best, often several months in between them. Anyway long story short, during the Chimera Ant Arc I actually stopped reading HxH because I thought it had fallen off and wasn't good anymore. Now with the benefit of hindsight and being able to take it all in at once, it's 10/10 masterpiece status. I think about that a lot nowadays whenever I don't like something initially or feel like something might be getting worse. I dead ass did not like one of the greatest manga arcs of all time as it was being released. I kinda took a break on Attack on Titan when the manga was around where S2 of the anime is but I didn't make any definitive judgments and I'm glad because now I consider AoT one of the GOATs too.

The current situation of the manga is very similar, the most recent arc is incredibly complex (and i'm enjoying it as well), but due to Togashi's health we did not get any update in more than a year, so i don't remember any details anymore...

I know you asked this in episode 102 what Gungi was and why you never heard of it. The reason being is Yoshihiro Togashi made it up. Gungi is a fictitious strategy board game from the manga/anime HunterXHunter. The writer never specified rules for Gungi. Gungi was likely modeled after the Korean board game Janggi along with aspects from Go and Shogi.

At this point I started getting mad anytime they cut away from the Gungi games to focus on the other cast, the Meruem/Gungi Girl dynamic is too much. I love it.

I've always thought of it that way. She is one of the geniuses in this world that are able to use nen subconsciously and it seems like she also subconsciously put nen conditions/restriction (she will not be good at anything aside from gungi and she will lose her life if she losses in gungi) that's why she's too good it's almost a hax.
