Few years later but I'm just now getting into Fate and... yeah I agree. I genuinely think what you know learn in UBW about these characters improved how I saw them in Zero. Like when I first heard the name, Kirei Kotomine, I got so unreasonably angry but as I watched the show, his actions in UBW made sense. Seeing Kiritsugu was also a shock to me based on how Shirou described him

When they refer to learning magic, they mean magecraft. Since true magic is the highest form of mystery beyond magecraft. For instance casting a fireball can also be done with a flamethrower. True Magic is unreplicable. There are only a handful of magics and the magicians (not mages) may die with it until it being thousands of generations before their descendants might have a chance of obtaining the same unique magic their ancestors had ever again.

Just to clarify about some other Fate titles. Those are not connect to main story line you are watching but there are some great spin offs you may want to check out if you like the series (Carnival Phantasm and cooking at emiyas are great for some chill time).

2006 version is only looks bad b/c its rly old dude its 2006 zero is 2011 thats big jump in animation and everything that was dark in 2006 looked exactly like that, example death note, animation dont look nice at all, besides ORIGINAL timeline is fate/stay night 2006 after zero but just not needed to watch because UBW and heaven's feel dig into it more

the first episode of every Fate series is a giant info dump because there is so much lore and world building they need to present up front. Don't worry though, no one understands it all right away and it'll start to come together as the series goes on. There aren't any more info dumps on this level in Zero at least lol

I wouldn't call it a spin off tbh, since none of the 3(Fate stay night, zero and Apoc) is the main story. All 3 are just the MC choosing to pursue a differnt heroine

You mean FSN, FSN: UBW, and FSN: HF are the main story. And they are very divergent which is why you can't watch one and get everything. Apocrypha is set in the same universe and has no connection. FZ is a direct prequel and Hollow Ataraxia (no anime) is a direct sequel.
