I love how Gilgamesh still hesitated on using ea til the end lol

TyBluewave

I don’t know where this idea came from, if something got recon somewhere along the line, but this is not true at least originally. originally, it was very clear that Shirou created the full Rho Aias himself. He literally says in his own monologue “from the hill of swords I pluck the greatest of shields” or something like that. He even describes the back lash he felt from each of the 7 petals breaking. If it was archer he wouldn’t have felt that. The VN doesn’t leave any room for Archer to have snuck an Aias in. I feel like this is one of those things someone said way back before things were translated and it just stuck around. Either that or there was a retcon I am not aware of. Edit: I recently learned Archer did use Rho Aias to help Shirou, but it didn’t happen in this anime. The reason is because they changed up how the fight went before UBW. In the VN Gilgamesh was never attacked by the grail until the end of the fight. When Shirou got folded by Ea in the VN, it was because Gil pulled it out and let the wind from it destroy the area just so Shirou would see how outmatched he was. Then we got the same as the anime where Shirou is laying on the ground after. But he has a piece of narration in the VN where he comments that even though Gilgamesh wasn’t trying to kill him it was a miracle the wind didn’t tear him apart. The reason he survived even just the wind from Ea charging up is because Archer stepped in and used Rho Aias to block just enough to keep Shirou alive. That is where this misunderstanding comes from, Nasu mentioned it specifically in an interview because so many people were misunderstanding after the anime came out since they changed the whole context of Ea’s first usage.

Ember1213

Gilgamesh (at least this version) has two major flaws, his arrogance and his lack of mastery. If Shirou fought Iskandar, he'd lose but since Gilgamesh has no mastery of any of his Noble Phantasms, UBW allowed Shirou to compete. Also you mention Heracles but a weaker version of Shirou managed to kill Berserker seven times over in one strike while Archer (who Shirou beat in UBW) killed him six times. If two weaker versions were able to do that, who's to say UBW Shirou can't kill beat him? Also you do remember what Class Archer is right? What is that class's skill? Independent action. He said he could last up to two days before disappearing. Combine that with the fact that Servants going into Spirit Form looks identical to them dying and he could easily fake his death

Ember1213

"Everything I don't like is bad writing"-You

Mew Anime

SO satisfying to finally see Gilgamesh cower like a fucking bitch LMFAO

Jamaal Ellison

Gilgamesh reminds me of Frieza. They have similar qualities.

Jamaal Ellison

Imagine dying trying to save Shinji, of all people. She could've just let him dissolve like a bouillon cube in the hate soup.

Jamaal Ellison

Kirie and Gilgamesh getting folded was worth the price of admission, but I have to say every rule that's been set up previously has been broken, and that's a little annoying. Dead characters are coming back to life, masters are switching servants, and servants that don't have masters are still in the game.

Fatal

1 more episodes and maybe OVA and HEAVENS FEEL TIME WOOOOOOOOO

Azzylito

I hope they watch the OVA

exof954

Definitely see Sunny Day!

homura

Gilgamesh failed to destroy Archer's spirit origin and as a result of an Archer class skill called "Independent Action" he was able to stay alive in spirit form and remain hidden until the final battle.

kai

we all know why gilgamesh lost lolz dude just so damn arrogant and prideful that he wouldn’t use his most op weapons at his disposal

Ginzo

Pretty sure Gilgamesh's armory is infinite.

不死鳥

Just some extra things about gilgamesh in this episode, he could've summoned EA at any point, but he chose not to due to pride, yet when he ended up relenting and pulling it out it was too late, and his arm got cut off so he lost. Another fact is that when he throws weapons I believe that they go back to him, so he won't ever run out of weapons like it seems that Roshi misunderstood at one point there. This can be seen if I recall correctly when in Fate Zero he threw weapons at the disgusting lake monster and said he wouldn't take them back due to them being sullied.

Polygon

Gilgamesh could've annihilated Shirou at any time before he got pulled into the Reality Marble. Even inside of it, he had like a gajillion different ways to have obliterated him. But like always, his arrogance is his achilles heel and it got the better of him. He REFUSED to take Shirou seriously even when he was being pushed onto the back foot. His galaxy sized ego is literally the only reason he loses fights in the Fate/verse.

Fernando Perez

One of the most hype moments in the franchise imo.

earthphoenix7068

The Archer class's independent Action skill is op.

Jolu

AKA plot armor

sotonye ogan

So let me get this straight so Gilgamesh who beat Hercules and Ishkandar without breaking a sweat, got his ass whooped by a wack exhausted Shirou-who just learned how to use his power not too long ago-, also given the fact that Archer with no mana would have killed him but he chose not to anyway. Yeah shit dont add up Plot amour came in clutch. 😂😂

triple

I will say it again, FUCK SHINJI! All roshis homies hate shinji. They should have let that piece of shit die.

ElasticMemories

Ea: Enuma Elish refers to the Babylonian legend of creation where it's supposedly the sword that split Heaven from Earth during the universe's creation. I prefer to think of it as the prehistoric prototype for Simon's drill

Dilyn Howard

It is not a time loop shirou won’t become archer in this timeline, the timeline is the same but this shirou won’t have the idea to go back in time to try and kill himself, because he expected all the pain that came with his ideal so even if he becomes archer he will still drive for the beauty in his dream.

Devin B

Gilgamesh was too cocky for his own good. He could've ended Shirou early on if he wanted to but his pride didn't allow him to go full strength against him until it was too late.

Jolu

Besides the plot armor I think that Gilgamesh respected Iskander so he used Ea right away and Herk was protecting Illya all the time so he lost lives too fast otherise he might had a better chance. But yeah its mostly plot armor cause all Gil needed to do was wear his armor and he was going to be fine.

Polygon

Gilgamesh losing to Shirou makes complete sense, tf out of here with the "plot armor" nonsense. My profile pic should make it obvious that I'm a Gilfag, but it makes TOTAL sense that Gil would lose to Shirou. EVEN THOUGH HE'S CONSIDERED THE STRONGEST STANDARD HEROIC SPIRIT, IT IS COMPLETELY WITHIN GIL'S CHARACTER TO LOSE BECAUSE OF HIS EGO. He said it himself. He REFUSED to take him seriously, underestimated him, and it cost him. Gil ALWAYS loses because he can never get his head out of his ass fast enough to fight seriously. Also no, Archer would get obliterated Gil. The VN makes it clear that EMIYA would get waxed because Gil considers him a major threat and would fight all out. The same can't be said of Shirou, hence the result we got.

Zephyrs
>>68232677

Canon that its not if you consider the origins of the Caster version of Gilgamesh

Ginzo

Yeah, I enjoyed the fight but that shit was dumb. Shirou was literally a civilian like 2 weeks ago. Now he's going toe to toe and blocking attacks from legendary servants. His growth was stupidly fast even by anime standards. Shirou should have died a long time ago. Edit: And I know they explained why, but that doesn't make it okay. It's called bad writing.

None None

I remember in the visual novel, Shirou tried to copy Ea. Gilgamesh completely fucking lost his shit when it looked like he actually managed to do it (and it was hilarious), but it shattered immediately. The reasoning is that it's a sword that was forged by the gods, so it's made of materials no mortal has seen before. Shirou obviously can't copy something if he can't figure out what the hell it's made of (Excalibur and Avalon are the exception, since he has a close connection with them to comprehend their materials. Even Archer would over-exhort himself and die after doing it, though).

Pan Cakes

Remember gilgamesh only lost to shriou cause of his stupid pride. dude literally didnt move the whole fight until only his arm was finally cut off and finally made him move a step back. also he never used ea until it was too late.

None None

They explained it earlier in the anime: Remember when Shirou was able to mimic Archer's fighting style after getting a good look at his black and white swords? When he analyses a sword, he doesn't just understand what it's made of, he also learns its history, how it was wielded by its previous holder, and even what special attacks were used with it. So his body is able to instinctively wield a sword the way the original owner would have for a moment. That's where 99% of his reflexes were coming from in this fight.

Weltall Gaia

I think it is actually a different timeline, originally Rin summons saber succesfully and EMIYA winds up with Rho aias, because he summons achilles instead. I think rin summoning archer knocks shirou off the EMIYA path no matter which route he takes. Although I'm only putting together things I've read online while trying to figure it out myself, so I could be wrong

baja

Was gilgamesh really master of none in his epic, or is it just as archer

Beignet Blues

I'm not sure completely, but I think Archer really died as a Servant, but came back in the end as a Guardian outside of time.

Shin splits

Tbh it’s probably not infinite but it’s like like he’s ever gonna run out since it’s so much it practically infinite

SimplyMocha

Yea there was only ever one time his vault was emptied in combat but it takes a looot to get to that point, that only friend.

None None

Sort of. In the original myth, he'd just use whatever. Axes, spears, knives, bows, wrestling moves. He didn't really have a signature weapon. He absolutely was a warrior, though. Although mythological Gilgamesh was absolutely nothing like the Fate version. He was a big, boisterous, burly dude who had a bromance with his equally huge buddy Enkidu. He was way more akin to Fate's Iskandar. (ironically, the real-life Alexander the Great was clean-shaven and fairly "pretty" for a man of his time)

Reign
>>68238276

If Gil used EA this fight would of been over in 5 seconds. Its quite literally the ultimate weapon and a weapon unique to him no one else can use. Its more about Gils arrogance and hubris that lead to the downfall and they played on that to tilt him.

Viela Guay

No, Saber's Instinct skill is the literal plot armor of Fate

関口信玄

Lmao what do you mean that wasn't Archer's voice? HOW doesn't it sound like him? It sounds EXACTLY like him. I'm sorry, but that was one of the dumbest things I've heard XD

Snake

This is also what I think happend gilgamesh was going to win and cause of that the counter force summoned archer back to finish the battle also if he would not have saved rin saber might have resisted to the end and not destroy the grail

関口信玄

Also notice that throughout the series, Archer always called her Rin, whereas Shirou always calls her Tohsaka. But at the very end here, Archer calls her Tohsaka, like he used to.

BZD

You gotta give Archer a break, it has been thousands of years, a man can forget those little things. ; p

Reign

That muck comment by rin was heavy foreshadowing

Danny

Now heres an issue I had with this final fight. Yes it was hype but it makes no sense Shirou could take down Gilgamesh by himself. Yes, Gilgamesh held back cuz of his pride til the last second when its too late but aside from EA, Gil had thousands of weapons ranked of the highest caliber. In fact, he couldve pulled out Excalibur and thrown it at Shirou and Shirou shouldnt be able to copy that without draining all of his borrowed mana. He can pull out Lancer's Gae Bolg, which even Archer's strongest defense Rho Aeis could barely defend against. Shirou's unlimited blade works is still limited to the mana he had and whille Rin definitely has alot more mana than Shirou or even the average mage, the fact that Emiya Archer (while as her servant) couldnt even scratch Heracles with his greatest attacks, means that theres no way Gilgamesh does not have weapons that Archer/Shirou cannnot copy aside from EA. Once again, Gil may have held back but in the middle of the fight, when he realized mid tier weapons arent cutting it, he said "to think I have to go all out against the likes of you" which means near the end he did start throwing high level noble phantasms and shirou still repelled them like they were nothing. Those were probably on par with the weapons he threw at Heracles, whom once again, Archer couldnt even scratch. Now, if it was a duo of Saber and Shirou, that might make a little more sense (like in the original fate stay night). With Avalon plus Shirou's UBW, plus Saber's sword skills and Excalibur, they actually stand a chance. Saber engages Gil who isnt as good in close combat while Shirou attempts to keep the Gate of Babylon at bay. Overall the fight was super cool to watch but really made no sense. It could be an issue of writing overall because Gilgamesh was just made to be too strong of a character.

KevMath

Best way to describe this is T-Mac’s 13 points in 33 seconds

Zeke

You didn't have to write all that man. Like I get it, they went more for spectacle than logic for the anime but chill lol It's just a reaction.

Komachi fag

also because he is with Rin in this timeline. she promises that she wont let him turn like Archer

Skebaba

It's basically the danny deleto button of Reality

Skebaba

This. The Counter Force exists to maintain the world, so if Gillyboi won, it'd be kinda fucked, so it had to send one of the Guardians to danny deleto his ass

Arc

Man Gilgamesh is my favorite character.

None None

(warning, a couple of spoilers for shit that the UFOtable anime skipped) Most of those things were explained in the source material. Like the reason Shirou can't copy Ea has nothing to do with how powerful it is. It's because it's a weapon that the gods themselves forged out of some kind of metal that doesn't exist in the moral world, so Shirou can't analyze it. As far as we know, it's only purely divine thing Gilgamesh has. Gilgamesh also doesn't have Excalibur, because it sort of disappears from the world when it isn't needed so it wasn't around during his era (he does have Saber's shittier sword, though). In regards to Gae Bolg, Gilgamesh discovered one of Gate of Babylon's big weaknesses while fighting Cu in the Fate route: If a weapon's trademark attack was invented by someone after his era, the version he has in the Gate of Babylon is completely incapable of using it. So even though he has Gae Bolg, it's a shitty version that can't do things like the super powerful thrown attack that Archer could barely block. I can't remember if the anime mentioned this, but Archer and Shirou have to "cheat" to repel higher-level noble phantasms. Normally the copies are weaker, but they use a technique that basically blows up the swords in exchange for making them stronger for an instant (which doesn't matter, since they're copies and they can just make another). So they can even match top-ranked NPs. Archer can easily scratch Heracles this way. Hell, in the skipped route, he's half-dead and still manages to tear through SIX of Heracles' lives before going down. Gilgamesh probably could have killed Shirou if he realized Shirou sucked at copying shields and just shot a bunch of shields at his face, though... This is just what happens when you try to adapt a 60 hour story full of long-winded exposition into a 12 hour anime series and some movies. Details get lost so things seem a lot more nonsensical due to the missing context. Just wait until Heaven's Feel, where they sometimes just don't bother to explain what the fuck just happened.

Thamor

Gilgamesh is one of the best good dialogue throwing villain in any anime show. =)

Jacota Lucian

A small addition since a lot of people are calling BS on gil loosing to shirou, and yes a lot of the things arent explained in the anime, but to give some context to how many things could have turned the whole fight for gil 1)If gilgamesh has his armour shirou wouldnt be able to scratch him(gil's armour works kinda like Hercules's nemean lion skin,it blocks certain weapons of a lesser caliber). If you are asking why he didnt use it,its cause he dosent have it,the grail swallowed it when he got turned from servant to human 2) If gil ever used magic or any ability or his chains (gilgamesh can ironicly eazely be a caster, but this version of gilgamesh isnt a servant, its an actual servant made human by the grail so hes not limited to his class of weaponry) 3)if he swallowed his pride is the eaziest thing to say,but to him and any other heroic spirit pride is everything,if a human challenged a servant(wich is imposible for the human) no true heroic servant would go all out, especialy for gil being the most pridefull he wouldnt accept a human being able to overcome his gate of babylon .This was never a thing of if gil used his ea,no heroic spirit would have gone all out in that scenario. 4)this is just an extra thing, but gilgamesh isnt that much of a scumbag, part of the demeanor is because the grail was corrupted so in turn gilgamesh was also corrupted after being swallowed(altough without him realizing it),he did a couple of things inbetween fate zero and stay night like drinking from his imortality cup,he always had it,but refused to drink it out of principle and also loved humans, but since he got corrupted after seeing humanity being so lazy he decided to drink his cup to become immortal so he could be an eternal king and remake humanity

David

Gilgamesh does have his armor, he wears it in the first route. the only reason he doesnt wear it for the next 2 routes are for plot convenience

CAMZ_AMV

Btw Gilgamesh weapons are practically infinite and after he fires his weapons they go back to his vault so I don't think that was his last weapon

stressbean

The thing that led Gilgamesh to his defeat was his pride. If he had used his Ea he would have clapped Shirou easily. Gilgamesh also had his armor and chains but used neither of them. Gilgamesh is a king and believes himself superior to others making him to prideful and cost him a battle he could have easily won had he used his best weapons and tools

Blackhart

Cover up for this be like: "Yeah, that was totally gas leak."

Polygon

Gil was NOT corrupted by the Grail, idk why people are still saying this. The Grail ATTEMPTED to blacken him but it is explicitly stated in the VN that Gil’s ego was too large and he REFUSED to be corrupted

Polygon

No, as per the VN Archer simply dematerialized and faked his “death” in the castle. He survived using the Archer class Independent Action skill.

Polygon

@ginzo Gilgamesh is an OK swordsman at best. How is it bad writing that he’d lose ehile sandbagging, with GoB being hard countered, and with Shirou forcing him into hand to hand combat while accumulating the battle experience of legendary heroes EVERYTIME he analyzes a weapon.

NeoSpotLite

Also wasn't it mentioned that Gilgamesh is a king and not a warrior. Therefore, he didn't master each Noble Phantasm, while he doesn't have Excalibur and may have Gae Bolg he can't use their strongest attacks because he didn't master them. I'm an anime only watcher and like Shirou says he's a Jack of all trades and master of none, he just has the weapons.

BZD

The interesting thing is, that Lancelot from the fourth war, would also have been able to defeat Gilgamesh, where Shirou and EMIYA are hard counters to Gilgamesh, Lancelot is more of a soft counter.

Noah Durette

Archer can scratch Berserker, he just has to use his A rank Noble phantasms which he has a lot of. Berserker can only be hurt by A rank Noble phantasms. That final blast from Archer took one of Berserkers lives. Archer is severely underestimated

Noah Durette

Gilgamesh is awesome, but Archer Emiya is my favorite anime character of all time

Crabwithshank

eh it all depends on gills mood plus ea claps ubw etc

Crabwithshank

Gil used to fight normally btw his reactions are great he just has archer stats

BZD

Well Ea claps basically everything. But the thing is, Lancelot and Shirou are both people that Gilgamesh thinks unworthy of using Ea on.

Eirei_Emiya

Nah, not really. Lancelot can only do so much. As per the novel, he was at his limit fending off 16 weapons. If Gil fired more, Lancelot would be done. Unlike Shirou who doesnt need to use his body to repel GoB, Lancelot needs to actually hold the weapons and use his fighting skills to do it. He is bound to get overwhelmed eventually.

Polygon

The Light Novel explicitly states that Lancelot was at his limit fending off attacks from 16 portals lol. When Gil opened 32 right before Tokiomi called him back, the narration explicitly says that the next wave would annihilate Berserker and everyone in the vicinity.

Kevin

Could someone explain when Shirou learned Rho ahias? Only part I’m kinda lost at.

kuroihana

i need the Oath Under Snow reaction

Alexander Inoa

From what I can remember of the Visual Novel, he pulls it out from his 'Hill of Swords' the first time he uses it while doing the Unlimited Blade Works chant subconsciously. Remember, every time Shirou and Heroic Spirit EMIYA's blades clashed while they were fighting, Shirou got more memories from EMIYA, saw more of his battles, and more of his Reality Marble. It's highly likely that Rho Aias was one of the 'weapons' he could conjure, even if it was just instinctual. Probably more so, because he didn't even call its name, and EMIYA said that it was his strongest defense, so he likely used it more than other shields, meaning it might have appeared in more memories, or it was more prominent in the Reality Marble. After realizing what it was and that he had it, he probably consciously pulled it out later in the fight, because that's when he calls its name. It's like how Shirou could use Rule Breaker in Heaven's Feel, even though he never saw it in person, it already existed within EMIYA's Reality Marble.

Connor Grynol

This is super late but (in the anime at least) the first Rho Aias, when Shirou was summoning his reality marble was done by Archer, since Shirou saw it then, he was able to replicate it in his realty marble.

blackfoxx98 012

This was explained to me but the differents between Shirou's reailty marble & Archers is that Archer's UBW represents how many people he's killed while Shirou's represents how many times he's willing to sacrifice himself.

Drake Rage

Yeah Lupa? Shirou is not worthy enough to be Saber's Master? How you going to throw shade at this man when he has done so much badass shit already. You know he becomes a fricken Heroic Spirit but somehow still want to throw shade, lol. 8:50 Shirou LOL, This man asked Gilgamesh if he has enough Weapons in stock. True that though, doesn't matter how many Weapons Gilgamesh has, since it will be less than infinity. (We are going to ignore Ea though, because that is just pure HACKS, LOL) After reading all the comments, I noticed that nobody mentioned how Gilgamesh hesitated to grab Ea even when he "subconsciously" manifested it to defend against Shirou. The man was literally defeated by his own Ego/arrogance, albeit understandable since he is basically the strongest Heroic Spirit out there so you can see why he wouldn't want to use his best, most op, broken, HACK of a weapon to defeat this "kid" who he considers to be completely inferior to him.

Rot

'Lots of things led to his defeat, from arrogance to the Grail sucking him up, outside interference and the lack of armor.

chou sion

yo get the fuck off lupa's meat nigga, damn!

Drake Rage

😅 Sorry bro, Lupa was so ready to talk shit about Kiritsugu like every episode after the first season. I got so mad with him in this Series, haha.

Luqha

I fucking love fate man well I'm onto see their heavens feel movies

Mike

you don't need to defend it everytime dude geez. giving fate fans a bad name

Tarence

Not y'all defending Lupa. This level of dickriding is beyond me.

danial javady

"dickriding" this word deadass has literally no meaning anymore because of clowns like you who over use it. unsub you fucking weirdo
