Going off the point of japan thinking she's beautiful and winning at life. if you want the flip side, Watamote(No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!) is a show like komi but if komi was was not beautiful. Very Funny but you will cringe at scenes especially if you relate.

Artwork as is the animation as a whole. If it wasn't directed well and looked mediocre the plot isnt strong enough on its own. The animation enhances the content 100%. I guess folks in Japan think the manga is mediocre and did not deserve such good animation

I definitely understand what Sheera was saying about the animation, that there’s some anime that wouldn’t be as great as it is without great animation however, the manga was pretty popular, in the west at least so I feel like this show would have been enjoyable even with average animation. Just my too cents, I see both point of views

To be fair, it's a lot easier to get away if weak (or weak-ish) plots in manga. It takes maybe 5 minutes to read a chapter of a weekly manga, so it doesn't feel like you wasted that much time if the chapter/manga isn't amazing.

i think it really depends. action shows usually do well in anime while romcoms or others dont necessarily need high class animation. im just generalizing because its not always true. but great animation does help give the manga or original work a boost. especially for those that dont read manga. demon slayer manga wasnt as popular until the anime hit and tahts largely due to how great of a job ufotable did.

I'm 21 and i used to watch it with my mom since it was still going on till the 2010s lol but i also realize that while im young im not a teen anymore so yea most young ppl, and if younger then me, wouldn't probably get this. i actually dont even think anyone of my friends in the same age group know 24 other than me, so maybe I'm an outlier myself.

You guys aren’t alone in hating Yamai. Literally everyone who ever read the manga hates her lol. originally the sharp chopsticks were just a knife in the manga and I guess they had to make it more a joke because it was pretty dark that she did had a knife lol

Well Netflix and just anime in general have a viewers all around the world for sure. One of the good things about modern day technology is that things can get translated and uploaded relatively quickly to the internet, for everyone to see. Even if it's not doing well in Japan, I can definitely tell you that the American viewership is very fond of it. Obviously I can't really speak for other countries, but I'm suer there are plenty of fanbases globally that really enjoy Komi. And I'm also sure there are groups of ppl in Japan who enjoy it. I don't think they ALL hate it, necessarily. A universal internet trait: the negative criticism tends to be the loudest.

That moment Komi told him she wanted to be friends after all gave me the feels, both times I watched it. Every time she speaks, it just has so much impact. Obviously because of her situation, but the animation and music, and most importantly the voice acting by Aoi Koga (Kaguya in Kaguya-sama) really drives it home. She did such a good job with the nuances in her voice, even just the tiniest noises she makes.

Ok but that wasn’t the point of the statement I made. Even mid range popular manga can get anime adaptions. What I was trying to get across is that there’s a reason for the extra effort in the animation. You need something to look at because this show isn’t an action-suspense-thriller-extravaganza that ppl look forward to nowadays. Then it’s not even that dialogue heavy since Komi is silent the whole time and Tadano only actually speaks here and there instead of internal monologuing. It depends on everyone else in the background to get the ball rolling. The episode they visit her house proves it lol

Random fact but in the manga the chopsticks that Yamai is holding throughout the episode aren't chopsticks, it's a whole kitchen knife.

I still find it crazy that there’s hate for this show in Japan. Watching that vid really brings home the differences between what the Japanese want in an anime compared to the west.

Yo I can't relate with what the japanese are saying, looking at demon slayer it would be another mid shounen (which definitely still sells) without ufotable animating the shit out of it. The sounddesign, the music, the animation is at it's peak but demon slayer itself is pretty generic. If it would get a really average/ mass production adaption I am 100% sure it would end up in the same category as black clover or fairy tail, where it is for sure a cool watch and it has it's fans but while watching you would also realize that it has tons of flaws and at the end of the day it just is a mid shounen. So obviously you have to count in the quality of the anime adaption while rating an anime. I doubt I could enjoy the komi manga but the anime makes it a pretty good watch just because of the pumped up quality.

Yeah, Yamai doesn't get any better in the manga until 100+ chapters later...and then it isn't by much, but in exchange we get a way better characters introduced to the main cast and they sort of edge her out. I'm sure the author realized finally just how unlikable she was lol

I get it's only episode 4, but here's my thoughts about Yamai: Just No. Happy, funny, go lucky anime teaching real issues about social communication issues, but then walking right into unhealthy relationships. This girl absolutely kidnapped the dude so efficiently and then doesn't just threaten but plots out where she's going to do away with him, but by the end of the episode it's all water under the bridge. Just No. Obsession is real and unsafe. Holy crap.
