Okay, so I realize that a lot of times, this show's capital "m" Message can seem a little heavy handed, but I think in a way it sort of needs to be. Especially at this time. Comic books have kind of always done that. I mean, look back on OOOLLLDD comic books and you'll see stuff like The Justice League or The Avengers fighting literal Hitler. Comic books and superhero stories are our culture's Myths. They're the same thing as like greek and roman tales of heroes battling gods and monsters. And for a loooooooooong time, comic books have been kind of stuck in that mentality of "Truth, Justice, And The American Way" and thats all well and fine, but the american way is something hugely different than what it used to be. So using these stories to normalize and educate about different cultures, gender identity, sexuality, and even non-traditional relationship styles like polyamory. I mean, look how confused Lupa was by the fact that homeboy had a husband and a wife. That shocked reaction is the reason why normalizing this in our media is great. Thats not talking shit on Lupa either, thats just saying his reaction is a perfect example of how we don't commonly see these very common lifestyles and practices depicted in media.

I mean I can't blame Lupa for his reaction cause I was the same way. I wasn't shocked about the polygamy itself but the person involved in it. The last time we saw Lagaan was when he had just broken up with M'gann and now he has a husband and wife. That was kind of a big jump.

They shoulda gotten Ron Funches (from Harley Quinn) to just do a dead-serious take on King Shark in this one, too -- would've been perfect. I love everything this show has to say in terms of the social commentary, but damn time and again the plot just seems to come to a dead stop to let them say it. I'm digging that we got a show coming out and saying this stuff, though, so on balance I'm still on board with the series.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. The "american way" as you put it so really not so different than what it used to be. Granted we as a society are much more accepting than we used to be and thats good and all but thats all it is. Majority of America is straight and enjoy the traditional nuclear family structure. Now while I agree that having the aspects of the "message" in our media is good and all, I dont agree they should take center stage. Just like with plenty of other things, they should be sprinkled here and there but not shoved to the forefront before the story. It also depends on the type of media. But when its heavy handed in an already existing IP like this with established stories and characters it comes off a little cheap. Like why not make your own show with your own characters where you can insert all the messages you want? Probably because no one would watch it. I mean what more proof do you want than comic book sales atm. Manga sales are dominating the charts because of things like this. Either way, the heaviness of pc stuff in this episode was very on the nose.

I keep getting distracted with it all the "messaging". Getting used to Kaldur being bi is enough for most people. Now in a single episode, Lagaan is in a polygamous relationship, and Violet is a non-conformist with her/it's gender (which is slightly ok given she's a god-machine in a mortal body). I think this is why American media is failing. I just couldn't enjoy the main story they are trying too tell otherwise.

I mean I get what you're saying but when its executed like this in my opinion it seems tastless. Seems like they're just reading a script that they can't deviate from, treats the viewer like they're dumb, and just spoon feeds them a narrative. Arcane was a show with a lot of social commentary yet it didn't treat the viewer like an idiot and it flowed well with the story. That's how you do social commentary right. But oh well hopefully they change the execution.

I like that they showed how relationships work in the sea dwellers society. They all must be some form of pansexual because everyone is a differing species of aquatic life that mix and mingle on a constant basis. Also their society follows different religions that probably said nothing about being with multiple people/species and gender being sinful so long as they ALL share love among the group with eachother. Like 2 dudes can't just share the same woman, they have to love each other too ( or maybe they can who knows but im assuming all must love eachother genuinly).

At least in Harley Quinn he was a functional and intelligent individual as well as a force to be reckon with. Of course, due to the nature of the show, he was as much a joke as everyone else. Being someone who identifies as Polyamorous, it's actually such a refreshing thing to see poly relationships represented so well. This makes sense time wise because Atlantis and ocean based societies were the first in this world, so the most advanced and oldest civilizations would have the most accepting and diverse amounts of social dynamics, considering theres literally a dozen other ocean based civilizations.

That they actually have way different and far more diversity in social and religious social constructs because Atlantis and ocean societies are the oldest in the world. I wouldn't say all are some form of pansexual, simply because of how gender and sexuality is constructed by our society. I would go as far to say that they arent that, because it's something completely different. And small correction, but someone who is pansexual, can easily be monogamous, not all Pan people are also Polygymous or Polyamorous, even though there is often overlap, like myself. It;s like, not all Trans people are gay. They can be straight, gay, bi, pan, demi, or more.

What do you mean pandering??? Please explain to me how any of what happened is pandering. As someone who has appreciated and felt represented by this show, I genuinely want to know why. Kaldur is one of the few characters I can relate with in any and all media. Being a brown skin man, who's mixed, and is at least bisexual, who's taken on a lot of responsibility in his life. With Violet, we get very subtle and very serious discussions about identity that are tied in well to the story of the mother box and with the Islamic faith/being Muslim. With Laggon, them practicing what their version of polygamy or polyamory is totally in line with a far more advanced and older society that doesnt have the safe belief systems us surface dwellers have. SO please explain where the pandering is going on? Or is it that when something is different to you and how you live your life, you call it pandering, but when its exactly what you do and see as normal, you don't bat an eye? Why is it not pandering when two cis, straight, monogamous people kiss? Have you ever thought about that. Instead of saying something ignorant like you just did, take a step back and realize that not everyone lives the same life you do and that some people like me appreciate the hell out of the writers to do something like this.
